감사 속에서 성찬을 맞이한다는 것에는 큰 의미가 있습니다. 모든 감사할 것 중에서 가장 큰 감사는 바로 구원에 대한 감사인데 성찬은 바로 그 구원을 감사하는 시간이기 때문입니다. 성찬을 받을 수 있다는 것 자체가 축복이자 감사한 일입니다. 성찬이 없었다면 죄사함도 없었고 구원도 없었습니다. 성찬이 있기 때문에 죄사함도 있고 구원도 있게 되었습니다. 구원이 있으니 천국도 있고 영생도 있는 것이기 때문에 이 모든 것의 시작인 성찬은 특별한 감사의 조건이 됩니다.

오늘 말씀은 이러한 성찬이 어떻게 시작되었는가를 잘 보여주고 있습니다. 마태복음 26장에 나오는 이 장면에서부터 성찬이 시작되었습니다. 그리고 그 성찬을 2천년이 지난 지금까지도 시행하면서 우리는 구원을 감사하게 된 것입니다. 그 최초의 시작이 어떻게 진행되었는지를 보십시오. 26절입니다.

“[마]26:26 그들이 먹을 때에 예수께서 떡을 가지사 축복하시고 떼어 제자들에게 주시며 이르시되 받아서 먹으라 이것은 내 몸이니라 하시고”

그들이 유월절 만찬을 할 때 예수님께서는 떡을 가지사 축복하시고 떼어서 제자들에게 주셨습니다. 유월절 만찬은 원래 이스라엘 백성들이 애굽에 종살이를 하다가 모세를 통해 하나님의 열 가지 재앙이 임했을 때를 기념하는 절기행사였습니다. 그때 열 번째 재앙이 죽음의 사자가 애굽의 모든 장자를 치는 재앙이었는데 오직 이스라엘 백성들의 집은 넘어가도록 하나님이 하게 하시는 것이 문설주에 양의 피를 바르는 것이었습니다. 그리고 하나님께서 사람들은 집안에서 무교병 떡을 먹게 하였습니다. 떡을 먹으며 피를 바를 때 사망의 심판을 면할 수 있었습니다.

이러한 유월절 절기를 기념해서 이스라엘 백성들은 원래 떡과 포도주를 먹었는데 예수님께서는 그 유월절의 만찬 중에 성찬의 의미를 보여주셨습니다. 그것은 유월절에 먹던 떡과 포도주가 사실은 예수님의 몸이자 피를 의미하는 것이라는 사실을 알게 하셨던 것입니다. 구약에서는 그걸 왜 하는지 알 수 없었지만 신약이 시작되었을 때 그 의미를 알게 되었습니다. 사실 유월절의 모든 예식은 전부 예수님의 구원을 의미하는 것이었습니다. 그것이 성찬을 통해서 자세히 나타나게 된 것입니다.

예수님의 몸을 먹는다는 의미는 새로운 힘의 근원을 받게 된다는 것을 의미합니다. 그전에 구약에서는 희생 제물로 드려진 고기를 먹는 것이었지만 이제 예수님의 몸을 의미하는 떡을 먹는 것은 하나님의 아들이 온전한 희생제물이 되셨고 그분이 구세주가 되심을 믿는다는 뜻입니다. 그리고 성찬에 참여할 때 예수님을 믿는 마음이 모든 구원의 근거가 된다는 것을 의미하게 되었습니다. 예수님의 떡을 먹는 자는 사망의 심판을 받지 않게 됩니다.

하지만 마음은 그렇지 않은데 행동만 한다고 해서 이런 행동이 효과를 갖는 것은 아닙니다. 마음이 있고 그에 따른 행동을 할 때 그것이 비로소 효과를 갖게 되는 것입니다. 예를 들어 다니엘은 우상제물을 먹지 않고 채소만 먹겠다고 했을 때 그가 간절히 바랬던 것은 채식주의자로서의 건강이 아니었습니다. 바벨론의 신하였지만 하나님을 섬기는 믿음이 있음을 굳게 붙드는 마음이 중요했습니다.

하나님은 바로 이러한 마음을 중요하게 여기십니다. 그것이 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 것이며 우리가 구원받는 자들임을 깨닫게 만듭니다. 그래서 믿음이 있는 자가 성찬에 참여하는 것이고 그 성찬에 참여하면서 예수님의 몸이 자신의 마음에 들어오는 것을 느끼는 것입니다. 믿는 자들에게는 이렇게 예수님의 몸을 마음 속에 넣을 수 있도록 허락해주시는 것이 감사한 일입니다. 억지로 먹이는 것이 아니라 예수님이 허락해주신 구원의 은혜를 받아들이고 성찬을 받을 수 있다는 사실 자체가 영광스러운 일이 되는 것입니다.

유명한 운동선수가 사인을 해주는 경우가 있습니다. 그 운동선수를 좋아하고 흠모하고 존경하기 때문에 그 선수의 흔적을 감사하게 생각합니다. 때로는 그 선수의 신발이나 유니폼을 받는 경우가 있습니다. 그럴 때 냄새 나고 쓰던 것을 받는다고 해서 불쾌하게 여기는 사람은 없습니다. 그 자체를 귀하게 여기고 영광스럽게 생각합니다. 그건 오직 그 사람을 존경하기 때문입니다. 예수님께서 우리에게 예수님의 몸을 주시는 것도 마찬가지입니다. 그 자체가 우리에게는 감사요 감격이요 영광입니다. 예수님이 우리를 구원해 주셨기 때문입니다.

그런데 다음 구절에 보면 그 예수님의 성찬이 어떻게 이루어질 수 있었는지가 잘 나타납니다.

“[마]26:27 또 잔을 가지사 감사 기도 하시고 그들에게 주시며 이르시되 너희가 다 이것을 마시라

[마]26:28 이것은 죄 사함을 얻게 하려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 바 나의 피 곧 언약의 피니라”

예수님은 잔을 가지시사 감사 기도를 하셨습니다. 하나님께 감사의 기도를 드리셨던 것입니다. 그 감사의 내용은 무엇이었을까요? 그 감사는 자신의 피 곧 언약의 피를 사람들을 위해서 흘릴 수 있고 또한 그 피를 줄 수 있다는 것 자체에 대해서 하나님께 감사하는 것이었습니다. 예수님 자신도 하나님께 감사하면서 우리에게 죄사함과 구원을 주시는 것입니다. 그렇게 하나님께 감사하는 이유는 하나님께서 세상을 사랑하셔서 독생자를 통해 죄사함을 얻도록 허락해 주셨기 때문입니다.

만약 하나님의 허락하심이 없었다면 예수님의 감사가 존재할 수 없고 예수님의 감사가 없다면 우리의 죄사함과 구원이 존재할 수 없었습니다. 그러나 그 모든 것이 존재하기 때문에 우리가 죄사함을 받을 수 있었고 구원을 얻게 되었습니다. 그러니 우리는 주님께서 잔을 주실 때 감사함으로 받는 것입니다. 그것은 죄 사함을 얻게 하려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 주님의 피 곧 언약의 피였기 때문입니다.

이 언약의 피를 받는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 모릅니다. 예를 들어 수술을 위해서 수혈을 받는 경우를 생각해 보십시오. 수혈을 할 때 환자와 맞는 피가 필요합니다. 그게 맞지 않는다면 아무리 수혈을 하려고 해도 소용이 없습니다. 오히려 환자를 더 위험하게 할 뿐입니다. 그를 살리기 위해서 필요한 조건의 피가 필요하고 그 피를 받을 때 살아날 수 있는 것처럼 우리를 살리기 위해서 필요한 오직 하나의 피는 예수님의 피입니다. 예수님의 피가 아니라면 우리는 죄사함을 받을 수 없고 구원의 약속을 받을 수 없습니다. 예수님 만이 하나님과 구원의 약속을 하셨기 때문입니다.

그래서 그 피의 의미인 포도주를 다 마시라고 했을 때 그것은 감사한 일입니다. 그 포도주를 통해 예수님의 성찬에 참여할 때 그것이 믿음의 고백입니다. 그 고백이 있기 때문에 우리가 죄사함을 받고 구원을 받습니다. 우리가 성찬에 참여한 이 행동이 우리의 구원의 증표가 되는 것입니다.

바로 이 예수 그리스도의 성찬에 참여하는 것을 나중에 하나님 나라에 가서도 다시 하게 됩니다. 예수님께서는 그것을 말씀하셨습니다. 

“[마]26:29 그러나 너희에게 이르노니 내가 포도나무에서 난 것을 이제부터 내 아버지의 나라에서 새것으로 너희와 함께 마시는 날까지 마시지 아니하리라 하시니라”

이 말씀은 예수님께서 아버지의 나라에서 새것으로 너희와 함께 마시는 날을 기다리고 간절히 바라신다는 의미입니다. 예수님께서 포도나무에서 난 것을 먹는 시간은 구원함을 받은 그분의 백성들과 함께 그들의 구원받음을 기뻐하면서 먹는 시간을 의미했습니다. 천국에서 예수님과 함께 성찬을 행하게 될 그 날을 기다리면서 우리는 이 세상에서 예수님을 생각하면서 성찬에 참여합니다. 우리가 하는 바로 이와 같은 방식은 아니겠지만 더 아름답고 영광스러운 방식이겠지만 그 시간을 고대하는 시간이 바로 성찬의 시간입니다.

우리가 바라는 많은 시간들이 있겠지만 특히 가장 바래야 하고 바라는 시간이 바로 예수님과 함께 먹는 시간입니다. 예수님과 함께 떡과 포도주를 먹는 상상을 해보십시오. 그 순간 우리는 아버지의 나라에 있는 것이고 예수님의 나라에 존재하는 것이며 말로만 듣던 천국에 존재하는 것입니다. 이러한 신앙적이고 정신적인 깨달음이 현재 우리의 육체적인 모든 어려움을 이겨냅니다. 육체로 살아가는 자들이 아니라 신앙으로 살아가는 자들이 되고 정신으로 살아가는 자가 됩니다. 그럴 때 선을 따르고 의를 이루며 영광을 바라보는 자들이 될 것입니다.

최초로 이루어진 성찬을 마치고 제자들은 하나님을 찬미하며 감람산으로 나아갔습니다. 30절을 보십시오.

“[마]26:30 이에 그들이 찬미하고 감람 산으로 나아가니라”

그 감람산은 예루살렘에서 가까운 곳이고 기도와 묵상을 위해서 자주 가던 곳이었습니다. 그렇게 찬미하며 예수님과 마음이 연합했을 때 다음의 일들도 감당할 수 있었습니다. 제자들 중에서 이와 같이 찬미하면서 감람 산으로 나아가지 않는 사람은 가룟 유다 밖에는 없었습니다. 우리도 성찬을 통해 주의 감사를 깨닫고 더욱 감사로 주님과 함께 동행하는 자들이 되어야 하겠습니다. 그렇게 살다 보면 어느새 주님과 함께 천국에 거하게 되는 구원받은 성도가 될 것입니다.

이러한 마음의 변화와 믿음의 발전이 오늘 성찬을 통해 우리 모두에게 넘치시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Matthew 40:26; 26-30: Forgiveness of Sins through Gratitude_1

Outline: The meaning of the Holy Supper received with thanksgiving, #53 Sacrifice,

[Matthew 26:26] As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat; this is my body."

[Matthew 26:27] Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you."

[Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

[Matthew 26:29] But I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."

[Matthew 26:30] Then when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Go forward.

There is great meaning in receiving the Eucharist in gratitude. Of all things to be thankful for, the greatest is gratitude for salvation, and the Eucharist is a time to give thanks for that salvation. The very act of receiving the Eucharist is a blessing and a source of gratitude. Without the Eucharist, there would be no forgiveness of sins and no salvation. Because of the Eucharist, there is forgiveness of sins and salvation. Because there is salvation, there is heaven and eternal life. Therefore, the Eucharist, the beginning of all these things, is a special reason for thanksgiving.

Today's message clearly shows how this Eucharist began. The Eucharist began with this scene in Matthew 26. And as we continue to observe this Eucharist, two thousand years later, we are thankful for our salvation. Look at how this first beginning unfolded. Verse 26.

“[Matthew 26:26] As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’”

During the Passover meal, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. The Passover meal was originally a festival commemorating the ten plagues God brought upon the Israelites during their slavery in Egypt through Moses. The tenth plague was the angel of death striking all the firstborn of the Egyptians. God allowed the Israelites to pass over their homes only by applying the blood of a lamb to their doorposts. God then instructed the people to eat unleavened bread in their homes. By applying the blood to the bread, they could escape the judgment of death.

To commemorate this Passover feast, the Israelites originally ate bread and wine, but during the Passover meal, Jesus demonstrated the meaning of the Eucharist. This was to reveal that the bread and wine eaten during Passover actually symbolized the body and blood of Jesus. While the Old Testament didn't explain why, its meaning became clear when the New Testament began. In fact, all the Passover ceremonies symbolized Jesus' salvation. This was revealed in detail through the Eucharist.

Eating Jesus' body signified receiving a new source of strength. Previously, in the Old Testament, eating meat offered as a sacrificial offering meant eating the bread, but now, eating the bread representing Jesus' body signified believing that the Son of God became the perfect sacrifice and that He was our Savior. Furthermore, participating in the Eucharist signified that believing in Jesus is the basis for all salvation. Those who eat Jesus' bread will not be condemned to death.

However, actions alone, without a clear heart, do not guarantee effectiveness. Only when the heart is present and actions are in accordance with it can they truly be effective. For example, when Daniel refused to eat food sacrificed to idols and instead ate only vegetables, what he desperately desired wasn't the health of a vegetarian. Even though he was a Babylonian subject, what mattered was his firm faith in serving God.

God values this very heart. It is what pleases Him and helps us realize that we are saved. That's why those with faith participate in the Eucharist, and as they participate, they feel the body of Jesus entering their hearts. For believers, it's a matter of gratitude to be allowed to receive the body of Jesus in their hearts. It's not about being forced to eat, but the very act of accepting the grace of salvation granted by Jesus and receiving the Eucharist is a glorious thing.

Sometimes, a famous athlete gives us an autograph. We like, admire, and respect that athlete, so we appreciate the traces of that athlete. Sometimes, we receive shoes or a uniform from that athlete. No one is offended by receiving something smelly or worn. We value and honor the very thing itself. This is simply because we respect that person. The same is true of Jesus giving us his body. This in itself is a source of gratitude, joy, and glory for us, because Jesus saved us.

The following verse clearly shows how Jesus' Eucharist was accomplished:

[Matthew 26:27] Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.

[Matthew 26:28] For this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

Jesus took the cup and gave thanks. He offered a prayer of thanks to God. What was the content of that thanksgiving? It was thanksgiving to God for being able to shed His blood, the blood of the covenant, for people and for being able to give that blood. Jesus himself gave thanks to God and offered forgiveness of sins and salvation to us. The reason for such thanksgiving to God is because God loved the world enough to allow forgiveness of sins through His only Son.

Without God's permission, Jesus's gratitude would not have existed, and without Jesus' gratitude, our forgiveness of sins and salvation would not have existed. However, because all of this exists, we could receive forgiveness of sins and salvation. Therefore, when the Lord gives us the cup, we receive it with gratitude. It is because it is the blood of the covenant, the blood of the Lord shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.

We cannot begin to comprehend how important it is to receive this blood of the covenant. For example, consider a blood transfusion for surgery. A blood transfusion requires a compatible blood source. If it doesn't match, no matter how hard we try, the transfusion is useless. It only puts the patient in greater danger. Just as a specific blood source is needed to save someone, and only by receiving that blood can we live, the only blood necessary to save us is Jesus' blood. Without Jesus' blood, we cannot receive forgiveness of sins or the promise of salvation. This is because only Jesus made the promise of salvation with God.

Therefore, when God tells us to drink all the wine, which symbolizes that blood, it is an act of gratitude. When we partake of Jesus's Supper through the wine, it is a confession of faith. Because of that confession, we receive forgiveness of sins and salvation. This act of participating in the Supper becomes a sign of our salvation.

We will again participate in the Supper of Jesus Christ in the kingdom of God. Jesus said this:

[Matthew 26:29] But I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.'"

These words signify that Jesus eagerly awaited the day when he would drink it new with you in his Father's kingdom. The time Jesus spent eating from the fruit of the vine symbolized the time he shared with his redeemed people, rejoicing in their salvation. As we await the day when we will share the Supper with Jesus in heaven, we partake of the Supper while thinking of Jesus on earth. While it may not be the exact same way we do it, it will be a more beautiful and glorious time, but the time of the Supper is the time we look forward to that time.

There are many times we long for, but the time we most long for and desire is the time we eat with Jesus. Imagine sharing bread and wine with Jesus. At that moment, we are in the Father's kingdom, in Jesus' kingdom, and in the heaven we've only heard of. This spiritual and spiritual realization overcomes all our current physical difficulties. We no longer live by the flesh, but by faith and spirit. Then, we will pursue goodness, achieve righteousness, and gaze upon glory.

After the first Holy Communion, the disciples went to the Mount of Olives, praising God. Look at verse 30:

[Matthew 26:30] And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

The Mount of Olives was near Jerusalem, a place they often visited for prayer and meditation. When their hearts were united with Jesus in this way, they were able to accomplish the following: Among the disciples, the only one who did not go to the Mount of Olives while singing a hymn was Judas Iscariot. We too must realize the Lord's gratitude through the Eucharist and become those who walk with Him with even greater gratitude. Living in this way, we will soon become saved saints who dwell with the Lord in heaven.

This change of heart and the development of faith will be realized through today's Eucharist. In the name of the Lord, I pray that you will be abundantly blessed for us all.
