[행]27:24 바울아 두려워하지 말라 네가 가이사 앞에 서야 하겠고 또 하나님께서 너와 함께 항해하는 자를 다 네게 주셨다 하였으니

  

[행]27:25 그러므로 여러분이여 안심하라 나는 내게 말씀하신 그대로 되리라고 하나님을 믿노라

  

 

  

그리스도인들이 감사라는 주제를 생각할 때 쉽게 감사하지 못하는 이유가 있습니다. 그럴 때 결과가 좋지 못해서 감사하지 못하는 경우도 있지만 과정이 좋지 못해서 감사하지 못하는 경우도 있습니다. 결과에 대해서는 없는 것보다 있는 것을 더 생각하고 생활보다 신앙을 더 생각해서 넘어가야 합니다. 과정에 대해서는 이루어지지 않은 것을 생각하지 말고 이루어진 것을 더 생각해야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 결과는 어떻게 받아들이기는 하지만 과정에서의 실패나 실수나 어리석음이나 아쉬움은 계속해서 감사할 수 없는 일이라고 생각하게 됩니다.

  

사람들이 지난 일의 과정을 감사함으로 받아들이지 못하는 이유는 그런 실수가 없어야만 다음번에 실패하지 않을 것이라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 그래서 실수는 실수일 뿐이고 그 실수가 감사가 되지 못하게 되고 그러면 결국에는 결과에 대해서는 감사할 수 있지만 과정에 대해서는 감사할 수 없는 상태 혹은 감사해서는 안 되는 상태가 됩니다. 하지만 과정에 대해서 감사할 수 없다면 그 감사는 진정한 감사가 되지 못합니다. 다시 과정에 대한 끝없는 후회와 불만의 고통이 이어지게 될 것입니다. 그렇게 되지 않도록 과정에 대해서도 감사를 하는 것이 필요합니다.

  

예를 들면 자신이 예전에 했던 선택을 후회한다고 생각해 보십시오. 그런 선택으로 인해 현재의 모습까지 이어지는 과정이 되었을 때 안 좋은 점을 생각하는 것입니다. 그래서 과거에 그런 선택을 하지 않고 다른 선택을 했었다면 얼마나 좋았을까를 생각하게 됩니다. 그런 생각에 빠지게 되면 바로 과정에 대해서 감사를 하지 못하게 되고 그로 인해서 현재의 많은 감사를 놓치게 될 뿐만 아니라 커다란 괴로움을 얻게 될 수 있습니다.

  

 

  

오늘 말씀은 바로 그럴 때 어떻게 그 과정을 생각해야 하는지를 잘 보여줍니다. 그 과정을 단순히 선택의 문제로 보고 후회하거나 안타까워 하기만 해서는 안 됩니다. 그 속에는 더 큰 하나님의 뜻하심과 섭리가 있기 때문입니다. 21절을 보십시오.

  

“[행]27:21 여러 사람이 오래 먹지 못하였으매 바울이 가운데 서서 말하되 여러분이여 내 말을 듣고 그레데에서 떠나지 아니하여 이 타격과 손상을 면하였더라면 좋을 뻔하였느니라

  

[행]27:22 내가 너희를 권하노니 이제는 안심하라 너희 중 아무도 생명에는 아무런 손상이 없겠고 오직 배뿐이리라”

  

이 내용은 바울이 로마로 압송될 때 유라굴로 광풍에 휩쓸려 3일 동안 표류한 다음에 바울이 함께 배에 있던 사람들을 격려하던 말씀이었습니다. 그리고 과거에 대해서 후회한다면 반드시 살펴보아야 하는 내용이기도 합니다. 이전에 했던 일들 중에는 틀림없이 이렇게 생각되는 내용들이 있습니다. 그때 이렇게 하지 않고 저렇게 했으면 좋았을텐데 라는 생각입니다.

  

‘이 친구를 만나지 않고 저 친구를 만났다면, 이 학교를 다니지 않고 저 학교를 다녔다면, 이 사람과 결혼하지 않고 저 사람과 결혼했다면, 이곳에 살지 않고 저곳에 살았다면, 그때 이 일을 하지 않고 저 일을 했었더라면...’ 이러한 아쉬움은 끝이 없습니다. 그리고 그럴 때마다 모든 관심과 의식은 바로 그때로 돌아가 버립니다. 현재의 해야 할 일과 앞으로 감당해야 할 일을 생각하지 못하게 되는 것입니다.

  

그러나 말씀 속에서 바울은 사람들에게 과거에 대한 아쉬움 보다 더 중요한 것을 강조하면서 말했습니다. ‘안심하라 너희 중 아무도 생명에는 아무런 손상이 없겠고 오직 배뿐이리라” 실수나 잘못을 통해 잃어버린 것이 있지만 중요한 것은 현재 이루게 된 것입니다. 과정 속에서 우리는 무엇을 이루게 되었는지를 잊지 말아야 합니다. 그것이 있기 때문에 현재와 미래를 바라볼 수 있습니다. 잃어버린 것, 이루지 못한 것만 생각하면 항상 과거에 머무를 수 밖에 없습니다. 이룬 것, 존재하는 것은 하나님의 도우심입니다. 하나님의 도우심이 모든 어리석음 가운데 나타났었습니다.

  

감사의 의미는 여기에 있습니다. 감사를 통해 가치를 발견합니다. 감사를 통해 소망을 깨닫게 됩니다. 감사를 통해 괴로움이 사라집니다. 그게 감사입니다. 그래서 바울은 그들이 총 14일을 견딜 수 있도록 그들에게 권하고 격려했습니다. 그럴 때 그들은 쓰러지지 않고 마침내 모두 구원을 얻을 때까지 포기하지 않았던 것입니다. 과정에서의 감사가 없으면 하루도 견딜 수 없습니다. 그 감사가 있기 때문에 미래의 결과도 감사로 바라볼 수 있습니다.

  

그런 감사로 생각하면 인간의 어이없는 실수가 있었고 안타까운 아쉬움이 있었지만 함께 하셔서 도우셨던 하나님이 계셨음을 깨달을 수 있습니다. 그 하나님을 붙드는 것이 더 중요합니다. 그런 마음이 있을 때 지난 과거가 자신에 대한 후회가 아닌 하나님께 대한 감사로 변화되어지고 현재와 미래가 하나님께 대한 소망과 기쁨으로 새로워질 수 있습니다. 그러면 생각이 달라지고 사고방식이 다음과 같이 변화됩니다.

  

‘이 친구를 만나서 고생을 했지만 하나님이 함께 하셔서 그 시기를 잘 지낼 수 있었구나, 이 학교를 다니면서 힘들었지만 하나님이 함께 하셨구나, 이 사람과 결혼해서 어려웠지만 하나님이 도우셨구나, 이곳에 살면서 낙심이 되었지만 하나님이 이끌어 주셨구나, 그때 이 일을 해서 어려움이 있었지만 하나님이 역사하셔서 지금까지 살 수 있었구나..’를 깨달을 수 있습니다. 이러한 생각의 변화는 무엇을 의미합니까? 나 중심의 편안하고 안락한 삶을 살지 못했다는 것에 연연하거나 얽매이지 않고 하나님 중심의 역동적이고 은혜로운 삶을 살고 있음에 감사한다는 뜻입니다.

  

앞으로 우리가 가게 될 천국과 지옥에서의 삶도 마찬가지입니다. 지옥에서는 영원토록 후회하면서 살아가게 될 것입니다. 그러나 천국은 영원토록 감사하면서 살게 될 것입니다. 지난 날이 어찌되었던 그것이 무슨 상관입니까? 내 자신은 현재 천국에서 살고 있는데! 그런 곳이 천국의 삶이라면 바로 지금도 그런 천국의 사고방식을 살아갈 수 있습니다. 과거의 어리석음 속에서 구원해 주신 하나님께 감사해 보십시오. 그럴 때 우리를 구원해주신 그 구원이 얼마나 기쁘고 은혜로운지를 새삼 깨달을 것입니다.

  

 

  

그런데 그 과거에 대한 마음이 자기 자신이나 다른 사람에 대한 분노와 원망이나 두려움이라면 어떨까요? 그럴 때 정말 조심해야 합니다. 자신에게도 그렇고 다른 사람에 대해서도 분노나 원망이나 두려움에 사로잡혀 있다 보면 하나님이 보이지 않게 되어서 실족할 수 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 23절이 우리에게 중요합니다.

  

“[행]27:23 내가 속한 바 곧 내가 섬기는 하나님의 사자가 어제 밤에 내 곁에 서서 말하되

  

[행]27:24 바울아 두려워하지 말라 네가 가이사 앞에 서야 하겠고 또 하나님께서 너와 함께 항해하는 자를 다 네게 주셨다 하였으니”

  

하나님께서는 두려워 말라고 하셨습니다. 전부 하나님의 뜻이 있었기 때문입니다. 그래서 사도 바울은 자신의 말을 듣지 않고 항해를 강행했던 선장이나 선주나 백부장을 원망하지 않았습니다. 그들의 잘못된 판단으로 풍랑을 만나 표류하기 시작하고 여러 날 먹지도 못하는 고통을 겪게 되었지만 상황에 대한 두려움에 사로잡히지 않았습니다. 그것은 사도 바울 뿐만 아닙니다. 자신을 노예로 팔았던 요셉도 형들에 대한 원한에 사로잡혀 살지 않았습니다. 다윗도 끊임없이 자신을 죽이려 했던 사울왕에 대한 분노 속에서 살지 않았습니다. 그 이유는 이들에게는 전부 자신이 섬기는 하나님이 계셨기 때문입니다. 어리석은 자들이 어리석은 판단을 하지만 그러나 그 속에서 하나님은 하나님의 뜻을 이루십니다.

  

풍랑을 피하지 못하고 그 풍랑에 따라 들어가서 고통을 자초하는 미련한 자들이었지만 그 속에는 더 큰 하나님의 뜻이 있었습니다. 바로 바울의 말을 무시하던 자들에 대한 심판이 있었던 것입니다. 그 심판으로 인해서 고생을 했지만 그러나 하나님의 뜻에 따른 계획에 의해서 바울은 풍랑으로 죽지 않고 살아서 가이사 앞에 서게 될 것이었습니다. 또한 함께 했던 사람들도 다 구원을 받게 은혜를 베풀어 주셨습니다. 이러한 하나님의 인도하심이 있었고 또한 그러한 인도하심을 믿었기 때문에 어리석은 다른 사람들에 대해서 얽매어 살지 않았던 것입니다.

  

우리도 마찬가지입니다. 악한 친구나 어리석은 가족이나 속이는 다른 사람들로 인해서 우리 인생이 망했다고 생각해서는 안 됩니다. 또는 그런 상황으로 망할 것이라고 생각해도 안 됩니다. 그러면 하나님을 섬기는 자들의 모습이 무엇인지를 모르는 것입니다. 하나님을 섬기는 자들은 어떤 상황 속에서도 뜻을 이루시는 하나님을 의지하는 자들입니다. 그래서 그 모든 악을 피할 수는 없지만 그 악으로 인해서 망하지는 않는 자들이 됩니다. 하나님의 보호하심이 있기 때문입니다.

  

그렇게 담대해지면 하나님의 뜻을 생각할 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 가족의 미련함으로 내가 불행해졌다고 생각하지 않을 수 있다면 그 미련함을 돕기 위해서 하나님이 나를 예비하셨다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그것이 더 감사의 제목이 될 수 있습니다. 중요한 것은 내 자신이 어떤 고백을 하느냐입니다. 그 고백이 과정에 대해서 감사하고 결과에 대해서 감사할 수 있다면 하나님께 진정으로 드려지는 인생이 될 것입니다.

  

 

  

말씀을 마치겠습니다. 사도 바울은 다음과 같이 고백했습니다.

  

“[행]27:25 그러므로 여러분이여 안심하라 나는 내게 말씀하신 그대로 되리라고 하나님을 믿노라”

  

그가 하나님을 확실히 믿었기 때문에 그 믿음에 의해서 함께 하던 모든 사람들이 다 잘 살 수 있었습니다. 하나님을 의지하지 못한다면 우리는 내 자신의 죄책감이나 다른 사람들에 대한 분노나 원망으로 인해 하나님께서 이루시는 일을 볼 수 없을 것입니다. 온전히 하나님을 믿고 의지해서 하나님께서 말씀하신 그대로 이루시는 놀라운 삶을 살게 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Outline: Thoughts of gratitude for fruitfulness, #64 Patience

  

[Acts 27:21] Since they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among them and said, "Men, you should have listened to me and not have sailed from Crete and thus avoided this damage and loss."

  

[Acts 27:22 Now I urge you to take heart. Not one of you will lose any life, only the ship.

  

[Acts 27:23] For the angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood by me last night, saying,

  

[Acts 27:24] "Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar, and God has granted you all those who sail with you."

  

[Acts 27:25 Therefore, men, take heart. I trust in God that it will be just as he told me." I Believe

  

 

  

There are reasons why Christians find it difficult to be thankful when considering gratitude. Sometimes, it's because the outcome isn't good, but sometimes it's because the process isn't good. Regarding the outcome, we should prioritize what we have over what we don't, and focus on our faith over our lives. Regarding the process, we should focus on what we have rather than what hasn't been achieved. Otherwise, while we may accept the outcome, we will continue to view failures, mistakes, foolishness, and regrets in the process as things we can't be thankful for.

  

 

  

The reason people can't accept the process of the past with gratitude is because they believe that only by avoiding those mistakes will they avoid failure next time. Therefore, mistakes are just mistakes, and those mistakes don't lead to gratitude. Ultimately, while we can be thankful for the outcome, we can't be thankful for the process, or we shouldn't be thankful for it. However, if we can't be thankful for the process, that gratitude isn't genuine. We will end up suffering endless regret and dissatisfaction with the process. To prevent this, we need to be thankful for the process as well.

  

For example, imagine regretting a choice you made in the past. When such a choice leads to the present, we tend to dwell on the negative aspects. We then wonder how much better it would have been if we had chosen a different path instead of that one. If we become caught up in such thoughts, we lose gratitude for the process. This not only causes us to miss out on the many blessings of the present, but can also lead to great suffering.

  

 

  

Today's message clearly demonstrates how to consider the process in such situations. We shouldn't simply view the process as a matter of choice, regretting or resenting it. Because within it lies God's greater will and providence. Look at verse 21.

  

“[Acts 27:21] Now when they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among them and said, ‘Men, you should have listened to me and not have sailed from Crete and thus avoided this damage and loss.’

  

[Acts 27:22] But now I urge you to take courage! Not one of you will be lost in any way, only the ship.”

  

 

  

These words were Paul’s words of encouragement to those on board the ship, after it had been tossed about by a storm in Eurocly for three days on its way to Rome. And these are the words we must examine if we regret the past. There are undoubtedly things we did in the past that make us think, “I wish I had done this instead of that.”

  

 

  

“If only I hadn’t met this friend and met that friend, if only I had gone to that school instead of this one, if only I had married that person instead of this one, if only I had lived there instead of here, if only I had done this instead of that…” These regrets are endless. And every time that happens, all attention and consciousness revert to that very moment. We lose sight of the tasks we must do now and the challenges we must face in the future.

  

However, in his words, Paul emphasized something more important than regrets about the past. "Take heart. None of you will be lost, only the boat." While some things were lost through mistakes or errors, the important thing is what we have achieved in the present. Throughout the process, we must not forget what we have achieved. Because of this, we can look to the present and the future. If we only think about what we have lost or failed to achieve, we will always remain in the past. What we have achieved, what exists, is God's help. God's help was revealed in all our foolishness.

  

This is the meaning of gratitude. Through gratitude, we discover value. Through gratitude, we realize hope. Through gratitude, suffering disappears. That is gratitude. That is why Paul encouraged and encouraged them to endure for a total of 14 days. They did not fall, but did not give up until they were all saved. Without gratitude in the process, we cannot endure even a single day. Because of this gratitude, we can also look to the future results with gratitude.

  

Through such gratitude, we can realize that despite the absurd mistakes and regrets of humankind, God was with us and helped us. Holding on to that God is more important. When you have such a heart, your past is transformed from regret to gratitude toward God, and your present and future are renewed with hope and joy in God. Then, your thoughts and perspectives will change as follows:

  

 

  

You will realize, "I met this friend and suffered, but God was with me, so I was able to get through it. I had a hard time attending this school, but God was with me. I married this person and had difficulties, but God helped me. I felt discouraged living here, but God guided me. I faced difficulties doing this back then, but God worked through me, so I'm still alive today." What does this change in thinking mean? It means you're grateful for living a dynamic and graceful life centered on God, not dwelling on or being tied down by the fact that you weren't able to live a comfortable and easy life centered on yourself.

  

The same goes for our future lives in heaven and hell. In hell, we'll live with eternal regret. But in heaven, we'll live with eternal gratitude. What does it matter what happened in the past? I'm living in heaven now! If that's what heaven is like, then it's the very life we're living now. We can live with a new way of thinking. Give thanks to God for saving us from the foolishness of the past. Then we will realize anew how joyful and gracious the salvation that saved us is.

  

 

  

But what if our feelings about that past are filled with anger, resentment, or fear, either toward ourselves or others? We must be very careful in such cases. If we are consumed by anger, resentment, or fear, whether toward ourselves or others, we will lose sight of God and may stumble. That's why verse 23 is so important to us:

  

“[Acts 27:23] For this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood by me and said,

  

[Acts 27:24] Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar, and God has granted you all those who sail with you.”

  

God told us not to be afraid, because it was all His will. That's why the Apostle Paul didn't blame the captain, the shipowner, or the centurion who disobeyed him and forced the voyage. Their misjudgment led to a storm, adrift, and suffering for days without food. They were not consumed by fear of their circumstances. This wasn't just the case for the Apostle Paul. Joseph, who sold himself into slavery, didn't live in resentment toward his brothers. David didn't live in anger toward King Saul, who constantly sought to kill him. This was because they all had a God they served. Fools make foolish decisions, but God accomplishes His will within them.

  

They were foolish men who failed to escape the storm and went along with it, bringing suffering upon themselves. But within this, there was a greater purpose of God. It was judgment upon those who ignored Paul's words. Although they suffered because of that judgment, according to God's will, Paul would not die in the storm but would live to stand before Caesar. Furthermore, God granted grace and salvation to all those who were with him. Because they had this guidance from God, and because they trusted in it, they did not become entangled in the foolishness of others.

  

The same is true for us. We should not think that our lives were ruined by evil friends, foolish family members, or deceitful people. Or that such circumstances will ruin us. Don't even think about it. If you do, you don't understand the nature of those who serve God. Those who serve God are those who rely on God, who accomplishes His will in any situation. Therefore, while they cannot avoid all evil, they are not destroyed by it. This is because they have God's protection.

  

With such courage, you can consider God's will. For example, if you can stop thinking that your family's foolishness has brought you misfortune, you can think that God has prepared you to help with that foolishness. That can be a greater cause for gratitude. What matters is how you confess. If your confession is one of gratitude for the process and the result, it will become a life truly offered to God.

  

 

  

Let me conclude. The Apostle Paul confessed:

  

 

  

[Acts 27:25] Therefore, men, take heart. "I believe God that it will be just as he told me."

  

Because he had a firm faith in God, everyone around him was able to prosper because of that faith. If we fail to trust in God, we will be unable to see what God accomplishes because of our own guilt, anger, or resentment toward others. I pray in the name of the Lord that you will live an amazing life where God fulfills His word by completely trusting and relying on Him.
