이제 네비게이토 성경요절의 마지막 구절에 왔습니다. 성경구절의 암송과 묵상을 통해서 우리의 신앙생활이 발전되기를 바랬습니다. 그럴 때 그 완성된 모습은 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 것입니다. 그것이 가장 완성된 모습인 이유는 그것이 가장 가치 있기 때문입니다. 그런 가치가 아니라 만약 자신의 만족이나 자기 성취 등을 생각한다면 그것은 신앙생활의 본질을 망가뜨려 버립니다. 애초에 신앙생활이란 자신을 위한 신앙생활이 아니라 하나님을 위한 신앙생활이기 때문입니다.

  

그래서 하나님께 영광을 돌리고자 할 때 신앙생활은 언제나 의미가 있습니다. 다시 말해 완성될 때만 의미가 있는 것이 아니라 하나님께 영광을 돌리려고 하면서 이전보다 좀더 나아질 때 항상 의미가 생깁니다. 그리고 그런 의미가 쌓이고 쌓여서 그 모든 과정이 하나님께 영광이 되고 완성된 모습으로서 하나님께 드릴 수 있습니다. 그것이 중요한 이유는 그럴 때 우리가 주님께 기쁨으로 나아갈 수 있기 때문입니다. 신앙생활은 결국 하나님께 나아가는 과정으로서 큰 의미를 갖게 됩니다.

  

 

  

오늘 말씀에서 우리는 그것을 알 수 있습니다. 14절부터 시작됩니다.

  

“[마]5:14 너희는 세상의 빛이라 산 위에 있는 동네가 숨겨지지 못할 것이요

  

[마]5:15 사람이 등불을 켜서 말 아래에 두지 아니하고 등경 위에 두나니 이러므로 집 안 모든 사람에게 비치느니라”

  

하나님은 우리를 세상의 빛으로 세우셨습니다. 그 세상의 빛됨을 생각할 때 우리의 역할은 하나님의 말씀을 증거하고 전파하는 사람들이 되는 것입니다. 빛처럼 하나님의 뜻을 세상에 전하고 그 뜻을 실현하며 하나님의 영광을 나타낼 때 우리의 존재의 의미가 잘 나타납니다. 산 위의 동네에 세상에 비쳐지는 하나님의 빛이 비추어지는 것처럼 성도들이 세상에 나타나게 될 것입니다. 또한 등불을 켜서 말 아래 두지 않는다는 것은 한 말 등을 세는 그릇 아래에 두지 않는다는 의미입니다. 다시 말해 숨기지 않고 높이 드러낸다는 뜻입니다.

  

하나님께서 우리를 그렇게 세우신 것은 정말 감사한 일입니다. 그리고 그런 감사를 생각할 때 우리는 숨어 들어가는 자들이 되어서는 안 되고 밖으로 나타나는 자들이 되어야 합니다. 또한 그렇게 본이 되고 모범이 되는 사람들이 되어야 합니다. 그리스도인들은 전부 그리스도를 나타내는 자들이기 때문입니다.

  

조선시대 양반들이 가졌던 의식을 생각해 보십시오. 양반이기 때문에 양반의 모습을 나타내야 했습니다. 그 의식 속에서 그들은 얼마나 노력을 많이 했겠습니까? 그러면서 그들은 양반임을 나타낼 수 있었습니다. 우리는 그리스도인이고 하나님의 성도입니다. 그럴 때 이러한 신앙적 의식은 양반 보다 더욱 뛰어납니다. 양반은 자기 자신을 위한 의식이자 자존심이었지만 우리가 갖는 신앙적인 생각은 하나님을 위한 섬김의 생각이기 때문입니다. 

  

그래서 초대교회 성도들은 하나님의 뜻대로 살고자 하였고 그들이 이루었던 모습은 하나님의 약속이 구약에서 신약으로 바뀌었을 때 나타난 풍성한 기쁨의 모습이 되었습니다. 복음의 약속이 어떻게 생활을 바꾸고 삶을 바꿀 수 있는가를 보여주는 아름다운 것이었습니다. 지금도 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 하나님의 빛의 사람들임을 깨달을 때에 끊임없이 하나님의 빛을 나타내고 또한 더욱 나타내려는 의지와 노력을 기울일 수 있습니다. 

  

 

  

그럴 때 그 모든 노력의 근원이자 보람은 바로 하나님께 영광을 돌리려는 것에 있습니다. 16절입니다.

  

“[마]5:16 이같이 너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라”

  

너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하라고 했습니다. 그래서 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하라고 했습니다. 그 영광스러움이 바로 성도들의 모습입니다. 인격 자체의 완전함을 이루라는 말이 아닙니다. 그때 그때 비춰지는 모습과 착한 행실을 통해서 하늘에 계신 우리의 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라는 것이었습니다. 그러니 완벽을 추구하는 것이 중요한 점이 아니라 정성을 다하는 것이 중요한 의미였습니다.

  

초대교회 제자들은 바로 그렇게 살기를 원했습니다. 예수님께서 승천하시고 성령을 부어주신 다음에 그들은 예수님의 능력과 권세가 온전히 자신들의 모습을 통해서 나타나기를 원했습니다. 그래서 열두 제자들은 사도의 역할을 감당했던 것이고 그것이 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 모습이었습니다. 또한 많은 제자들은 자신이 있는 곳에서 복음을 전하고 사랑을 전하면서 하나님의 뜻을 나타낼 수 있었습니다.

  

지금도 우리는 우리가 살고 있는 이곳에서 하나님의 뜻을 나타내고 하나님의 영광을 나타낼 수 있습니다. 그래서 서신서에서 나오는 내용들을 하나씩 삶속에 실천하면서 하나님을 깨닫고 하나님의 뜻을 실천하며 살게 됩니다. 그중 빌레몬서는 구체적으로 빌레몬이 오네시모에게 어떻게 행하기를 바라는 사도 바울의 마음을 보여주고 있습니다. 그 모습 속에서 우리 삶 속에 하나님이 무엇을 바라시는지를 상상할 수 있습니다. 그 뜻을 저버리지 말고 잘 감당할 때 빌레몬이 오네시모를 용서하는 것처럼 우리도 살아갈 수 있습니다. 그럴 때 하나님께 영광이 돌려집니다.

[Matthew 5:14] You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

  

[Matthew 5:15] Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

  

[Matthew 5:16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

  

 

  

Now we come to the final verse of the Navigator Bible verse series. I hope that our faith life will grow through memorizing and meditating on Bible verses. Then, its perfect form will be to glorify God. The reason it is the most complete form is because it is the most valuable. If we focus on personal satisfaction or self-fulfillment instead of that value, we destroy the essence of the life of faith. After all, a life of faith is not about ourselves, but about God.

  

Therefore, a life of faith is always meaningful when we seek to glorify God. In other words, it is not only meaningful when we are complete, but also when we strive to glorify God and become better than before. And as this meaning accumulates, the entire process brings glory to God, and we can offer it to Him as a complete form. This is important because only then can we approach the Lord with joy. The life of faith ultimately becomes deeply meaningful as a process of approaching God.

  

 

  

We see this in today's passage, starting with verse 14:

  

“[Matthew 5:14] You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

  

[Matthew 5:15] Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”

  

God has established us as the light of the world. When we consider our role as the light of the world, our role is to be those who bear witness to and spread God's word. As we, like light, convey God's will to the world, realize it, and display His glory, the meaning of our existence is clearly revealed. Just as God's light shines upon the world from a city on a hill, so the saints will be revealed to the world. Furthermore, not lighting a lamp and putting it under a basket means not placing a small basket under a measuring vessel. In other words, it means not hiding it but exposing it.

  

We are truly grateful that God has raised us up in this way. And with such gratitude in mind, we must not be those who hide, but those who stand out. We must also be those who set an example and model for ourselves. For all Christians are those who reveal Christ.

  

Consider the rituals of the noblemen of the Joseon Dynasty. As noblemen, they had to display the nobleman's character. How much effort must they have put into these rituals? In doing so, they were able to demonstrate their nobleman status. We are Christians and saints of God. In this way, our religious rituals surpass even those of the noblemen. While the noble class was a matter of self-serving consciousness and pride, our religious thinking is a matter of service to God.

  

 

  

Therefore, the saints of the early church sought to live according to God's will, and their achievements became a reflection of the abundant joy that emerged when God's promises were translated from the Old Testament to the New Testament. It was a beautiful demonstration of how the promises of the gospel can transform lives and transform lives. The same holds true today. When we realize that we are people of God's light, we can continuously exert our will and effort to display God's light and further manifest it.

  

 

  

The source and reward of all such efforts lies in glorifying God. Verse 16:

  

“[Matthew 5:16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

  

 

  

He told us to let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify God. This glory is the very essence of the saints. It does not mean achieving the perfection of character itself. The point was to glorify our Father in heaven through our daily lives and good deeds. Therefore, the important point was not the pursuit of perfection, but the dedication of our hearts.

  

The disciples of the early church desired to live in this way. After Jesus ascended to heaven and poured out the Holy Spirit, they desired for Jesus' power and authority to be fully manifested through them. Therefore, the twelve disciples fulfilled the role of apostles, and this was an example of glorifying God. Many disciples were also able to manifest God's will by spreading the gospel and love wherever they were.

  

Even now, we can manifest God's will and His glory in our own lives. Therefore, by putting the teachings of the epistles into practice one by one, we come to understand God and live in accordance with His will. The Book of Philemon, among others, specifically reveals the Apostle Paul's desire for Philemon to act toward Onesimus. Through this, we can imagine what God desires for our lives. By not abandoning His will and living faithfully, we can live like Philemon forgiving Onesimus. Only then will we receive glory from God.

  

 

  

I pray that Navigator's carefully selected Bible verses will inspire our thoughts and hearts, resulting in even more abundant fruit in us. May our thoughts be manifested in action, and may those actions bear remarkable fruit, allowing us to grow as believers. Through these words, may our lives bring glory to God and we become people who please Him. I pray in the name of the Lord.
