[엡]4:30 하나님의 성령을 근심하게 하지 말라 그 안에서 너희가 구원의 날까지 인치심을 받았느니라

[엡]4:32 서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 너희를 용서하심과 같이 하라
4장의 마지막에 이르렀습니다. 우리가 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 새로운 사람의 모습으로 변화되는 것이 4장의 핵심이었습니다. 그것은 즉흥적으로 준비되었거나 우연히 만들어진 것이 아니었습니다. 하나님의 계획과 역사하심 속에서 예정과 섭리 가운데 이제 그 내용의 마지막 결론부분이 남은 구절 속에서 나타납니다. 이 구절은 새로운 사람의 핵심이 무엇인지를 보여줍니다. 그것은 예수 그리스도의 복음의 본질이기도 했습니다. 그 중요한 의미를 잘 이해해서 더욱 하나님이 기뻐하시는 새로운 사람이 되어야 하겠습니다. 30절을 보십시오.
“[엡]4:30 하나님의 성령을 근심하게 하지 말라 그 안에서 너희가 구원의 날까지 인치심을 받았느니라”
새로운 사람의 핵심이 여기에 나타납니다. 그것은 바로 하나님의 성령을 근심하게 하지 않는 것입니다. 이 말은 다시 말하면 하나님의 성령을 기쁘시게 하는 것이기도 합니다. 그 이유는 그 안에서 우리가 구원의 날까지 인치심을 받았기 때문입니다. 그래서 구원의 날까지 계속 성령 안에 있게 되는데 그 성령을 근심하게 하면 그로 인해서 우리 자신이 복을 받지 못합니다.
성령께서 우리를 품어 주실 수 있는 이유는 예수 그리스도의 십자가 고난으로 인해 우리의 모든 죄를 사해 주셨기 때문입니다. 그래서 우리가 구원받은 자가 되었기 때문에 우리를 하나님 앞으로 인도하시려고 성령께서 우리를 품어 주시는 것입니다. 그런데 그 안에서 성령님을 기쁘시게 해야지 근심하게 한다면 우리는 결국 하나님 앞에 갈때까지 성령을 근심하게 만드는 자가 되고 맙니다. 그럴 때 성령께서는 우리로 인해서 얼마나 괴로우시겠습니까?
그렇지만 성령은 결코 우리를 포기하시지 않습니다. 우리의 연약함을 도우시는 분이시기 때문에 괴롭더라도 우리를 붙들어 주십니다. 이 원리를 잘 보여주는 말씀이 있습니다.
“[롬]8:25 만일 우리가 보지 못하는 것을 바라면 참음으로 기다릴지니라
[롬]8:26 이와 같이 성령도 우리의 연약함을 도우시나니 우리는 마땅히 기도할 바를 알지 못하나 오직 성령이 말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위하여 친히 간구하시느니라”
성령은 우리의 연약함을 도우십니다. 우리가 부족할 때 말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위해서 간구해주시는 분이 바로 성령님입니다. 그런데 부족할 뿐만 아니라 악하기도 해서 근심하게 만든다면 우리는 큰 죄를 짓는 것입니다. 그렇게 되지 않도록 성령을 기쁘시게 하기 위해 노력한다면 우리의 존재는 분명해집니다.
이를 위해서 적극적이고 의지적으로 성령님이 기뻐하실 일을 해야 합니다. 그것이 다음 구절에 잘 나타납니다.
“[엡]4:31 너희는 모든 악독과 노함과 분냄과 떠드는 것과 비방하는 것을 모든 악의와 함께 버리고
[엡]4:32 서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 너희를 용서하심과 같이 하라”
우리가 인간이라서 악의가 없을 수는 없지만 성령을 기쁘시게 하기 위해서 노력하고자 할 때 할 일은 바로 모든 악한 행동을 악한 의도와 함께 버리는 것입니다. 그래서 악한 의도가 남아있지 않은 착한 성도가 되는 것이 중요합니다. 그러면 행동도 그에 따라서 선한 모습으로 나타납니다. 그것이 바로 서로 친절하고 서로 불쌍히 여겨서 서로 불쌍히 여기게 된다면 그것은 하나님께서 우리를 사랑하시고 용서하시는 것과 같은 모습이 됩니다.
마태복음 18장에는 일만 달란트 빚진 자가 나옵니다. 일 달란트는 6000 데나리온이고 1 데나리온은 노동자 하루 품삯이었습니다. 그래서 일만 달란트는 하루 품삯을 5만원으로 계산하면 3조원의 가치가 됩니다. 이러한 엄청난 빚을 주인이 탕감해주었는데 그 종은 자신이 받아야 할 오백 데나리온을 갚아주지 않았습니다. 왜냐하면 자신이 무엇인가를 받을 때는 좋았지만 무엇인가를 나눠줘야 할 때는 좋아하지 않았기 때문이었습니다.
우리는 성령을 기쁘시게 하는 새로운 사람들입니다. 그러한 자들로서 주님을 기쁘시게 하려고 할 때 ‘서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기’를 할 수 있습니다. 그러면서 새로운 피조물, 새로운 사람으로 거듭나게 되었습니다. 새로운 사람은 한번에 되는 것이 아니라 꾸준히 새로운 사람이 되고자 할 때 성령 안에서 그렇게 변화될 수 있습니다.
에베소서 4장이 우리에게 성령 안에서 구원의 날까지 인치심을 받은 자들임을 늘 기억하고 항상 성령을 기쁘시게 하며 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 우리에게 행하신 그 놀라운 은혜를 날마다 묵상하면서 새로운 사람이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Eph] 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of salvation.
[Eph] 4:31 Put away all bitterness, anger, wrath, shouting, and slander, along with all malice.
[Eph] 4:32 Be kind to one another, compassionate, and forgiving, just as God in Christ has forgiven you.
We have reached the end of Chapter 4. The core of Chapter 4 was our transformation into the new image of a person pleasing to God. This was not something prepared spontaneously or created by chance. Within God’s plan and work, amidst predestination and providence, the final conclusion of the content now appears in the remaining verses. This verse reveals the core of the new person. It was also the essence of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We must fully understand this important meaning and become a new person who pleases God even more. Look at verse 30.
“[Eph] 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of salvation.”
The core of the new person appears here. It is precisely not grieving the Holy Spirit of God. In other words, this also means pleasing the Holy Spirit of God. The reason is that we were sealed within Him until the day of salvation. Therefore, we remain in the Holy Spirit until the day of salvation; if we grieve the Holy Spirit, we ourselves cannot receive blessings as a result.
The reason the Holy Spirit can embrace us is that He has forgiven all our sins through the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross. Therefore, because we have become saved, the Holy Spirit embraces us to lead us to God. However, if we cause the Holy Spirit grief rather than pleasing Him within that context, we ultimately become those who grieve the Holy Spirit until we stand before God. How distressed must the Holy Spirit be because of us in such a situation?
Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit never gives up on us. Because He is the One who helps us in our weakness, He holds us up even when we are distressed. There is a passage that clearly illustrates this principle:
“[Romans] 8:25 If we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
[Romans] 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that cannot be expressed.”
The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. It is the Holy Spirit who intercedes for us with groans that cannot be expressed when we are lacking. However, if we are not only lacking but also wicked, causing Him grief, we are committing a great sin. If we strive to please the Holy Spirit so that this does not happen, our existence becomes clear.
To this end, we must actively and intentionally do things that please the Holy Spirit. This is clearly illustrated in the following verses:
“[Eph] 4:31 Put away all malice, anger, wrath, shouting, and slander, along with all malice.
[Eph] 4:32 Be kind to one another, compassionate, and forgiving, just as God in Christ has forgiven you.”
Since we are human, we cannot be completely free of malice, but when we strive to please the Holy Spirit, what we must do is cast away all evil actions along with their evil intentions. Therefore, it is important to become a good saint in whom no evil intentions remain. Then, our actions will also manifest as goodness accordingly. If we are kind to one another and show compassion to one another, it becomes a reflection of God loving and forgiving us.
Matthew chapter 18 features a man who owed ten thousand talents. One talent was equivalent to 6,000 denarii, and one denarius was a day's wage for a laborer. Therefore, if we calculate the value of ten thousand talents at a daily wage of 50,000 won, it amounts to 3 trillion won. The master forgave this enormous debt, yet the servant did not repay the five hundred denarii he was owed. This was because while he was pleased when he received something, he was not pleased when he had to share something.
We are new people who please the Holy Spirit. As such, when we seek to please the Lord, we can be “kind to one another, compassionate, and forgiving.” In doing so, we are born again as new creations and new people. Becoming a new person is not something that happens overnight; rather, it is through the Holy Spirit that we can be transformed in this way when we consistently strive to become new.
I pray in the name of the Lord that you will always remember that Ephesians chapter 4 describes us as those who have been sealed in the Holy Spirit until the day of salvation, always please the Holy Spirit, and become new people by meditating daily on the amazing grace God has shown us in Christ.
