예수님이 십자가에 달려 돌아가신 후 제자들은 삼일 만에 부활하신 주님을 만났습니다. 그리고 모여 있을 때 예수님을 만났고 제자들이 각기 예수님을 만났으며 갈릴리 바다에서 만났습니다. 그 다음에 예수님이 지시하신 대로 함께 갈릴리 산으로 나아가서 예수님을 만났습니다. 승천하시기 전까지 예수님이 만나주신 사람들은 500여명이었습니다. 그리고 부활 후 40일 후에 승천하실 때 참여했던 사람들은 120명이고 10일 후에 오순절 성령강림에 참여한 숫자는 동일하게 120명이었습니다. 그리고 그들이 성령충만함으로 복음을 증거했을 때 믿게 된 사람들이 3,000명이었습니다.

이러한 복음확장의 일들을 생각해 보면 그냥 숫자만 확장되는 것이 아니라 예수님의 가르침이 확장되는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 복음의 확장은 믿는 자들의 기술이나 실력이 아닙니다. 예수님께서 자신이 목숨 바쳐서 이루신 구원의 길을 사람들에게 알리시는 것입니다. 제자들은 그것을 따라가는 것뿐이었습니다. 이러한 원리는 지금도 마찬가지입니다. 주님이 복음과 하나님의 말씀을 우리에게 알려주시고 그것을 전파하게 하십니다. 우리가 우리의 그 어떤 것을 전하는 것이 아닙니다. 물길을 만들고 수로를 만드는 것을 생각해 보십시오. 물이 있으니 그것을 확장하는 것 뿐이지 애초에 물이 없다면 물길도 의미가 없습니다. 이러한 생각을 할 때 우리는 물 그 자체에 더욱 집중할 수 있습니다. 그러면 물길도 의욕적으로 잘 만들 수 있습니다.

거꾸로 보고 있는 마가복음 11장은 우리에게 원래 우리가 받았던 예수님의 물이 무엇인가를 다시 한 번 깨닫게 합니다. 기독교 신앙도 기독교 교육도 기본적인 것은 예수님의 가르침입니다. 예수님의 가르침의 가치와 영광을 깨달을 때 우리의 신앙도 의미가 있고 우리의 믿음도 영광을 향해 나아갈 수 있습니다. 그것을 보여주는 15,16절을 보십시오.

“[막]11:15 그들이 예루살렘에 들어가니라 예수께서 성전에 들어가사 성전 안에서 매매하는 자들을 내쫓으시며 돈 바꾸는 자들의 상과 비둘기 파는 자들의 의자를 둘러 엎으시며

[막]11:16 아무나 물건을 가지고 성전 안으로 지나다님을 허락하지 아니하시고”

이전에 예수님께서 유월절을 지키기 위해서 예루살렘에 입성하셨고 그때 많은 사람들이 호산나 외치면서 환호하였습니다. 예수님께 대한 기대와 소망이 넘치는 시기였습니다. 그리고 그 다음 날 예루살렘 성전에 다시 들어가셨을 때 성전을 청결하게 하셨습니다. 이 사건이 오늘 본문에 나온 장면입니다. 성전에서 예수님이 깨끗하게 하신 것은 성전 안에서 매매하는 자들이었고 돈 바꾸는 자들이었으며 비둘기 파는 자들이었습니다. 그리고 아무든지 물건을 가지고 성전 안으로 지나다니는 것을 허락지 않으셨습니다. 성전 안으로 물건을 가지고 지나다니는 것은 하나님께 제사를 드리거나 예배하거나 기도하거나 묵상하기 위함이 아니라 오직 매매를 위한 것이었기 때문이었습니다.

그리고 예수님께서는 그렇게 성전을 청결하게 하신 이유를 말씀해 주셨습니다.

“[막]11:17 이에 가르쳐 이르시되 기록된 바 내 집은 만민이 기도하는 집이라 칭함을 받으리라고 하지 아니하였느냐 너희는 강도의 소굴을 만들었도다 하시매”

예수님이 안타까워하신 것은 내 집은 만민이 기도하는 집이 되리라고 하셨는데 그 하나님의 집을 강도의 소굴로 만들었다는 것이었습니다. 성전이 하나님의 거하시는 처소로 만민이 기도하고 만민이 하나님께 나아오는 곳이 되게 하신다고 하셨는데 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님의 영광을 도둑질하는 강도가 거하는 집으로 만들었다는 것입니다. 그래서 주님은 성전을 청결하게 하시고 본래의 목적을 깨닫게 하셨습니다.

이러한 성전 청결을 위한 예수님의 노력을 생각해 볼 때 오늘날의 우리의 모습을 돌아봅니다. 그리스도의 몸 된 교회가 매매를 통해 유익을 얻고 돈 바꾸는 것을 통해 유익을 얻고 비둘기 팔아 유익을 얻는 장소가 된다면 주님이 그것을 막으실 것입니다. 물건을 팔기 위해 교회에 지나다닌다면 주님이 금지하실 것입니다. 예나 지금이나 예수님은 바로 이러한 깨끗함을 이루기 원하십니다. 그렇게 되기 위해서 죄값을 치르셨기 때문입니다. 예수님의 십자가는 이렇게 성전을 매매의 장소로 만든 자들의 죄를 사해 주시기 위해서 이루어졌습니다. 그러니 그 죄값의 사함을 받은 자들로서 우리는 그렇게 살지 말아야 합니다. 이것이 진실로 예수님의 십자가에 감사하며 안타깝게 생각하는 예수님을 믿고 따르는 사람들의 모습입니다.

그러한 예수님을 따라가는 사람들의 본질을 잘 보여주는 내용이 있습니다. 그것이 예수님이 인용하셨던 말씀인 이사야 56:7에서 잘 나타납니다.

“[사]56:7    내가 곧 그들을 나의 성산으로 인도하여 기도하는 내 집에서 그들을 기쁘게 할 것이며 그들의 번제와 희생을 나의 제단에서 기꺼이 받게 되리니 이는 내 집은 만민이 기도하는 집이라 일컬음이 될 것임이라”

하나님이 그들을 하나님의 산으로 인도하시고 하나님께 기도하는 하나님의 집에서 그들을 기쁘게 하며 그들의 예배를 받으셔서 만민이 하나님께 기도하는 집이라고 말하게 하신다는 것이었습니다. 이 말씀의 중심은 하나님이고 하나님이 자신에게 나아오게 허락하신다고 했는데 그걸 이스라엘 백성들은 자기 유익과 이윤과 실리를 위해서 나아오는 것으로 변질시킨 것입니다. 

예수님의 이러한 가르침을 우리는 지금도 잘 기억해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 복음의 핵심은 바로 이렇게 하나님께 나아오고 예수님께 나아오게 하는 것이기 때문입니다. 그렇지 않고 복음의 결실을 자신이 취하려 하는 자들은 하나님께 죄를 짓는 강도와 같은 자들입니다. 그리고 그들의 죄를 예수님이 사해 주셨습니다. 그러니 그 죄사함을 받아들이고 다시 하나님께 온전히 나아오게 되기를 주님은 원하십니다.

부활절이 지나고 부활의 주님이 전파하신 복음의 시대를 살아가고 있는 우리는 이 말씀을 잘 기억해서 우리의 믿음의 방향이 우리의 유익을 위해서 나아가지 않고 하나님께 영광을 돌리기 위해서 나아가야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 우리의 믿음이나 복음은 우리의 유익을 위한 종교활동에 불과할 뿐입니다. 그로 인해 얻는 것은 아주 사소한 인생에서의 즐거움 뿐입니다. 그러나 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고 하나님으로부터 복을 받을 때 우리의 인생은 하나님과의 연합으로 나아가게 됩니다. 성전에 지나다니는 자가 아니라 하나님께 나아가는 자가 되어야만 하는 것입니다. 그러면 우리는 일주일에 한 번 성전을 지나가는 사람이 아니라 평생 하나님께 나아가는 자가 될 수 있습니다. 하나님의 무엇 때문에 하나님께 나아가는 자가 아니라 진실로 하나님을 생각하는 마음을 갖는 것이 중요합니다.

그러면 그러한 진실한 하나님께 대한 마음을 어떻게 구별하겠습니까?  그것은 어려움을 극복하는가를 통해서 나타납니다. 하나님께 나아가는 것이 축복이고 이를 통해서 하나님과 함께 하는 것은 우리에게 너무나 귀한 기회가 되는데 이와 같은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 예수님을 죽여야 하겠다고 생각하는 사람들이 있었습니다. 18절을 보십시오.

“[막]11:18 대제사장들과 서기관들이 듣고 예수를 어떻게 죽일까 하고 꾀하니 이는 무리가 다 그의 교훈을 놀랍게 여기므로 그를 두려워함일러라”

대제사장들과 서기관들은 성전을 청결하게 하시고 성전의 가치를 깨닫게 하시며 하나님께 기도하며 나아가게 하시는 예수님의 말씀을 들으면서 예수를 어떻게 죽일까 하고 논의하기 시작했습니다. 이유는 무리가 그의 교훈을 놀라워하면서 좋아했기 때문에 그를 두려워하였기 때문입니다. 그가 무리의 사랑을 받으며 무리가 그를 따르며 그가 무리를 다스리기 되는 것을 두려워하였습니다. 왜냐하면 그 무리는 자기들의 권한 하에 있는 자들이었기 때문에 계속 자기들 밑에 있어야만 했기 때문입니다.

그래서 그들은 진정한 강도가 되었습니다. 예수님이 하나님의 아들이시고 하나님께서 주시는 가장 온전한 가르침을 주고 있음을 알았지만 무리를 빼앗길까봐 두려워했고 그래서 그들은 누구보다도 악한 강도로서 예수님을 죽이려고 했던 것입니다. 그런데 이러한 악인들은 드러나게 나타나는 자들이었지만 드러나지 않게 나타나는 어려움도 있습니다. 거짓 선지자나 이단은 잘 발견되지만 한계나 어려움이나 낙심 되는 상황은 하나님께로 나아가는 것을 방해하는 은밀한 요소들이 됩니다. 그런 일들을 두려워하면서 실족하고 주님으로부터 멀어진다면 그 사람은 하나님께 대한 진실함을 잃어버리게 됩니다.  

우리는 그런 악인이나 한계와 어려움을 잘 이해해서 극복해야 합니다. 그럴 때 온갖 시험과 방해와 선동에서 벗어날 수 있습니다. 안타깝게도 예수님의 교훈을 놀라워하고 예수님을 환호했던 자들은 죄에 유혹되어서 예수님을 못박으라고 소리를 지르는 자들이 되고 말았습니다. 나중에 그들이 회개하고 예수님께로 나아오는 3천명 중의 한 사람이 되기도 하였지만 근본적으로 그렇게 악한 일에 선동되지 않기 위해서는 모든 한계와 어려움의 의미를 잘 구별해야만 합니다.

마치 높은 산을 올라갈 때에는 높은 고도가 어려움이 되고 멀리 있는 지역을 방문할 때에는 그 거리가 부담이 되는 것처럼 신앙에는 어려움이 존재합니다. 그러나 그럴 때에도 온전하게 하시는 예수님의 말씀을 믿고 의지하면서 나아가면 하나님께 진심으로 나아가는 자들이 될 것입니다. 그러한 자들이 오순절 마가 다락방에 모여서 기도하는 120명의 성도들이었고 그들이 하나님의 나라의 전파를 시작하는 한 사람 한 사람이 되었습니다. 또한 그러한 자들이 회개하고 돌아올 수 있는 3000명을 받아들일 수 있는 사람들이 되었습니다.  

부활하신 주님은 이 세상에 오셔서 성전을 청결하게 해주셨습니다. 그 주님이 부활하셔서 역사하시는 이 시기에 더욱 주님의 말씀의 본질이자 복음의 근원은 하나님께 진실함으로 나아가는 것이라는 가르침에 귀를 기울여 하나님 앞을 지나다니는 자가 아니라 하나님께 기도로 나아 가는 자가 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Mark] 11:15 And they entered Jerusalem. Jesus went into the temple and drove out those who were selling and buying in it. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves.

[Mark] 11:16 And no one was allowed to carry anything through the temple.

[Mark] 11:17 Then He taught them, saying, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

[Mark] 11:18 When the chief priests and the scribes heard this, they plotted how to kill Jesus, for all the people were astonished at his teaching and feared him.

[Mark] 11:19 And As evening fell, they went out of the city.

After Jesus died on the cross, the disciples met the resurrected Lord three days later. They met Jesus when they were gathered together, met Him individually, and met Him at the Sea of Galilee. Then, as Jesus instructed, they went together to the mountains of Galilee to meet Him. Before His ascension, Jesus met with about 500 people. Then, 120 people attended His ascension 40 days after the resurrection, and the number of those who attended the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost 10 days later was the same 120. Furthermore, when they witnessed the Gospel filled with the Holy Spirit, 3,000 people came to believe.

Considering these events of the expansion of the Gospel, we can see that it is not merely the numbers that expand, but the teachings of Jesus that expand. The expansion of the Gospel is not the skill or ability of believers. It is Jesus making known to people the path of salvation He accomplished by sacrificing His life. The disciples were merely following it. This principle remains the same today. The Lord reveals the Gospel and the Word of God to us and enables us to spread them. We are not conveying anything of our own. Consider the act of creating waterways and canals. Since water exists, we merely expand upon it; without water in the first place, a waterway would have no meaning. When we reflect on this, we can focus more on the water itself. Then, we can create waterways with enthusiasm and skill.

Viewing Mark 11 in reverse allows us to realize once again what the water of Jesus, which we originally received, truly is. The foundation of both Christian faith and Christian education is the teachings of Jesus. When we realize the value and glory of Jesus' teachings, our faith gains meaning, and our belief can advance toward glory. Look at verses 15 and 16, which demonstrate this. “[Mark] 11:15 And they entered Jerusalem. Jesus went into the temple and drove out those who were selling and buying in it, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves.

[Mark] 11:16 And He did not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple.”

Previously, Jesus had entered Jerusalem to observe the Passover, and at that time, many people cheered and shouted, “Hosanna!” It was a time overflowing with expectation and hope for Jesus. Then, when He entered the Jerusalem temple again the next day, He cleansed the temple. This event is the scene described in today’s text. What Jesus cleansed in the temple were those who were selling, the money changers, and the dove sellers. Furthermore, He did not allow anyone to carry goods through the temple. This was because carrying goods through the temple was not for the purpose of offering sacrifices to God, worshipping, praying, or meditating, but solely for the purpose of buying and selling.

And Jesus explained the reason why He cleansed the temple in this way.

“[Mark] 11:17 Then He taught them, saying, ‘Is it not written, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations”? But you have made it a den of robbers.’”

What Jesus lamented was that although He had said His house would be a house of prayer for all nations, they had turned God’s house into a den of robbers. He had said that the temple would be a dwelling place for God, a place where all nations pray and come to Him, but the people of Israel had made it a house where robbers who steal God’s glory resided. Therefore, the Lord cleansed the temple and made them realize its original purpose.

Considering Jesus’ efforts to cleanse the temple in this way, we reflect on our own state today. If the church, the body of Christ, becomes a place where profit is gained through buying and selling, through exchanging money, or by selling doves, the Lord will prevent it. If people pass through the church to sell goods, the Lord will forbid it. Then as now, Jesus desires to achieve this very kind of purity. This is because He paid the price for sin in order for it to happen. The cross of Jesus was accomplished to forgive the sins of those who turned the temple into a place of commerce. Therefore, as those who have received the forgiveness of that price for sin, we must not live that way. This is the true image of those who believe in and follow Jesus, who are truly grateful for and lament the cross of Jesus.

There is a passage that clearly illustrates the essence of those who follow Jesus. It is well revealed in Isaiah 56:7, a verse that Jesus quoted.

“[Isa] 56:7 I will bring them to my holy mountain and make them glad in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar. For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.”

It meant that God would lead them to His mountain, make them glad in His house of prayer, and accept their worship, so that all nations would say it was a house of prayer for God. The center of this passage is God, and it states that God allows them to come to Him; yet the people of Israel distorted this into coming for their own benefit, profit, and self-interest.

We must still clearly remember these teachings of Jesus. This is because the essence of the Gospel is precisely to bring people to God and to Jesus in this way. Those who do not, but instead try to take the fruits of the Gospel for themselves, are like robbers who sin against God. And Jesus has forgiven their sins. Therefore, the Lord desires that we accept that forgiveness and come fully to God again.

Now that Easter has passed and we are living in the age of the Gospel preached by the resurrected Lord, we must remember these words well so that the direction of our faith does not proceed for our own benefit, but to give glory to God. Otherwise, our faith or the Gospel is nothing more than religious activity for our own gain. What we gain from that is merely trivial pleasures in life. However, when we please God and receive blessings from Him, our lives move toward union with Him. We must become those who approach God, not merely those who pass through the temple. Then, we can become those who approach God for a lifetime, rather than people who pass through the temple once a week. It is important to have a heart that truly thinks of God, rather than approaching Him for the sake of something of God.

Then, how can we distinguish such a sincere heart toward God? It is manifested through whether one overcomes difficulties. Approaching God is a blessing, and being with Him through this is a precious opportunity for us; yet there were people who, upon hearing these words of Jesus, thought they had to kill Him. Look at verse 18.

“[Mark] 11:18 When the chief priests and the scribes heard this, they plotted how to kill Jesus, for all the people were amazed at His teaching and feared Him.”

The chief priests and scribes began to discuss how to kill Jesus as they listened to His words, which cleansed the temple, made people realize its value, and led them to pray to God. The reason was that they feared Him because the crowds were amazed at His teaching and loved Him. They feared that He would be loved by the crowds, that the crowds would follow Him, and that He would come to rule over them. This was because the crowds were those under their authority, and they would have to remain subordinate to them.

Therefore, they became true robbers. Although they knew that Jesus was the Son of God and was giving the most perfect teachings God had, they feared losing the crowd; therefore, acting as robbers more wicked than anyone else, they sought to kill Jesus. However, while these wicked people were those who manifested openly, there are also difficulties that appear invisibly. False prophets and heretics are easily detected, but limitations, difficulties, and discouraging situations become hidden elements that hinder one from approaching God. If one stumbles and distances oneself from the Lord out of fear of such things, that person loses their sincerity toward God.

We must understand and overcome such wicked people, limitations, and difficulties. Only then can we escape from all kinds of temptations, hindrances, and incitement. Sadly, those who marveled at Jesus' teachings and cheered for Him were tempted by sin and ended up shouting for Jesus to be crucified. Although they later repented and became one of the 3,000 who came to Jesus, fundamentally, to avoid being incited by such evil deeds, we must clearly discern the meaning of all limitations and difficulties. Just as high altitude poses a challenge when climbing a high mountain and distance is a burden when visiting a distant region, difficulties exist in faith. However, even in such times, if you move forward believing and relying on the words of Jesus who makes us complete, you will become those who sincerely draw near to God. Such were the 120 saints who gathered in the Upper Room of Mark on Pentecost to pray, and they became the individuals who began the preaching of the Kingdom of God, one by one. Furthermore, such individuals became the ones capable of receiving the 3,000 who could repent and return.

The resurrected Lord came into this world and cleansed the temple. In this time when the resurrected Lord is working, I pray in the name of the Lord that you will heed the teaching that the essence of the Lord’s Word and the source of the Gospel is approaching God with sincerity, becoming not those who merely pass by God, but those who approach God in prayer.
