에베소서 2장에서 살펴본 것은 우리의 본질은 죄인이고 우리는 오직 하나님의 은혜로 인해서 구원을 받은 자들이라는 것이었습니다. 그리고 그 구원은 예수 그리스도 안에 있기 때문에 이루어지는 것이고 예수님의 은혜가 크시다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이러한 원리 속에 우리가 있기 때문에 우리는 늘 감사와 기쁨 속에서 살아가게 됩니다. 우리가 하나님으로부터 그리고 예수님으로부터 많은 것을 받아 누리며 살고 있기 때문입니다.
이러한 신앙적인 고백이 중요한 이유가 있습니다. 그것은 어떤 성도들의 경우에는 에베소서가 보여주는 신앙의 삶과 전혀 반대의 삶을 살아가고 있기 때문입니다. 하나님을 믿으면서 뭔가 잃어버리고 있다고 생각하면서 살아갑니다. 내 노력을 잃어버리고 내 재능을 잃어버리고 내 시간과 돈을 잃어버리고 있다고 생각하면서 살아갑니다. 하나님 안에서 더 많은 것을 누릴 수 있었지만 다른 사람들을 생각할 때 생각만큼 얻지 못하고 있다는 상대적인 결핍 속에서 살아가고 있습니다.
이미 받은 것이 많은데 잃은 것이 많다고 생각하면서 살아가는 것은 안타까운 일입니다. 왜냐하면 그러면서 잃어버리고 있기 때문입니다. 에베소서는 성도가 받은 것을 깨달으면서 다시 얻게 되기를 바라는 목적으로 쓰여졌습니다. 성도가 에베소서를 통해 하나님으로부터 받은 구원이 얼마나 귀한 것인가를 생각할 때 그보다 훨씬 가치가 적은 것에 대해서 자신이 그것을 못 받았다는 의식에 사로잡히지 않을 수 있습니다. 또한 그럴 때 그리스도 안에 있는 진실한 성도가 될 수 있습니다.
오늘 말씀이 그것을 잘 보여줍니다. 19,20절을 보십시오.
“[엡]2:19 그러므로 이제부터 너희는 외인도 아니요 나그네도 아니요 오직 성도들과 동일한 시민이요 하나님의 권속이라
[엡]2:20 너희는 사도들과 선지자들의 터 위에 세우심을 입은 자라 그리스도 예수께서 친히 모퉁잇돌이 되셨느니라”
성도가 외인이 아니고 나그네도 아니고 시민이고 하나님의 권속이라는 말씀은 하나님의 은혜 안에 들어와 있고 이미 시민이 되었으며 권속이 되었다는 것을 보여줍니다. 정말 외인이나 나그네 등은 무엇을 더 얻을 수 있을지를 따집니다. 또는 무엇을 얻지 못했는지를 따집니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 언젠가 떠날 사람들이기 때문입니다. 그러나 이미 시민이 되고 권속이 된 사람들은 무엇을 더 얻었는가가 목표가 아닙니다. 무엇을 더 할 수 있는가가 목표가 되는 사람들입니다.
빵을 많이 먹기 위해서 빵집을 하는 사람은 없습니다. 치킨을 더 많이 먹기 위해서 치킨집을 하는 것이 아닙니다. 어린 아이들이 혹시 그렇게 생각할 수 있을지 모르겠습니다. 그러나 성인들은 절대로 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 빵집의 빵이나 치킨집의 치킨은 주인이 먹기 위해서 만드는 것이 아니기 때문입니다. 그 음식을 손님들에게 팔기 위해서 만드는 것이었습니다.
그와 같이 하나님의 권속들은 하나님의 일을 하는 것이 목표인 사람들이지 하나님으로부터 무엇을 받는가가 목표인 사람들이 아닙니다. 이미 시민이 되고 권속이 되었다는 자체가 모든 것을 받았음을 의미하기 때문입니다.
그래서 우리는 우리가 사도들과 선지자들의 터 위에 세우심을 입은 자임을 알아야 합니다. 그 순종과 헌신을 통해 우리가 복음을 받게 되었고 그로 인해서 하나님의 자녀가 되었습니다. 이것을 이루신 분은 예수 그리스도시고 그 복음의 혜택이 오직 모퉁이돌이 되신 예수님을 기준으로 삼아서 이루어졌습니다. 그것을 우리가 잘 기억하고 예수님을 따라가는 하나님의 성전인 것을 잊지 말아야 합니다.
오케스트라가 연주를 하는 것을 생각해 보십시오. 모든 단원들이 지휘자의 지휘 아래 일사분란하게 연주를 합니다. 여러 명이 바이올린을 켜도 한 사람이 하는 것과 같습니다. 정확하게 해야 할 연주를 시작하고 정확하게 자신의 연주를 마칩니다. 그 모든 것이 바로 지휘자를 통해서 진행됩니다. 그리고 그 지휘를 잘 따랐을 때 비로소 관객들의 환호성과 칭찬을 듣게 됩니다.
우리가 하나님의 성전으로서 해야 하는 일이 있습니다. 그것을 하려고 할 때 무엇을 받아야만 할 일을 하는 것이 아니라 이미 받은 자로서 행할 수 있습니다. 그러면서 우리는 하나님 안에서 지어져 갑니다. 이것을 보여주는 말씀이 21, 22절입니다.
“[엡]2:21 그의 안에서 건물마다 서로 연결하여 주 안에서 성전이 되어 가고
[엡]2:22 너희도 성령 안에서 하나님이 거하실 처소가 되기 위하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 지어져 가느니라”
이미 권속이 되었는데 현재 성전이 되어 간다는 것은 앞으로 우리가 할 일이 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 미래에 될 모습으로서 하나님의 거하실 처소가 되기 위하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 예수님과 함께 지어져 간다는 것은 하나님의 특별하신 뜻과 계획이 있다는 것입니다. 그 처소의 한 부분이 되기 위해서 노력할 때 예수님과 동행하면서 역할을 감당할 수 있습니다.
이스라엘 백성들이 광야에서 성막을 건축할 때 그들은 여러 가지 면에서 협력하면서 최선을 다했습니다. 가나안에 정착해서 다윗에 의해 성전이 지어질 때 이스라엘 백성들은 성전공사에 참여해서 자신의 역할을 감당했습니다. 그럴 때 그 지어진 성전이 그들이 만든 것이며 광야의 성막은 그들이 수고한 일의 결과였습니다. 그것을 받아 주시는 분이 바로 하나님이고 그러한 헌신과 충성으로 인해 새로운 땅에 새로운 나라를 세울 수 있었습니다.
지금도 우리가 하나님 안에서 최선을 다할 때에 주님이 주시는 칭찬과 축복 속에서 하나님의 성전이 되어갈 것입니다. 우리나라 건국초기에 미국에서 독립운동에 앞장섰던 분들이 나중에 정식 정부가 세워질 때 귀한 역할을 맡았습니다. 그 이전부터 나라를 사랑하는 마음으로 참여하려고 했을 때 그 나라가 정말 세워진 후에 직책을 받아서 감당했던 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 나라에 참여하려고 할 때 우리의 역할이 나타납니다. 그 역할을 감당할 때 예수 그리스도 안에서 주님과 함께 지어져 가는 자들이 됩니다. 그 과정 속에서 함께 하시는 예수님을 만날 수 있습니다.
우리에게 알게 하시는 하나님 나라에서의 위치를 잘 기억하고 하나님 나라의 시민이자 권속으로서 하나님의 일에 잘 참여하는 자들이 되어야 하겠습니다. 이러한 에베소서의 놀라운 복음의 말씀이 우리 삶 속에 넘치시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Outline: Exposition of Ephesians
[Ephesians 2:19] So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household.
[Ephesians 2:20] Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.
[Ephesians 2:21] In him the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
[Ephesians 2:22] In whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
In Ephesians 2, we examined that we are sinners by nature and are saved only by God's grace. We learned that salvation comes from being in Jesus Christ and that Jesus' grace is great. Because we are grounded in this principle, we can always live in gratitude and joy. Because we live enjoying so much from God and Jesus.
This confession of faith is important. It's because some believers live lives that are completely opposite to the life of faith outlined in Ephesians. They live with the feeling that they're losing something in their faith. They live thinking they're losing their efforts, their talents, their time, and their money. They could have enjoyed more in God, but when they think of others, they feel they haven't received as much as they thought, and they live in a state of relative deprivation.
It's a pity to live with the feeling that you've already received so much and yet have lost so much. Because in doing so, you're losing it. Ephesians was written with the hope that believers will realize what they have received and then regain it. When believers reflect on the preciousness of the salvation they have received from God through Ephesians, they won't be caught up in the feeling that they haven't received something of far lesser value. Only then can they become true believers in Christ.
Today's reading demonstrates this well. Look at verses 19 and 20. “[Ephesians 2:19] So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
[Ephesians 2:20] built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.”
The statement that saints are not strangers and foreigners, but citizens and members of the household of God, shows that they have entered into God's grace and have already become citizens and members of the household. Indeed, foreigners and foreigners often consider what more they can gain, or what they have not gained, because they will eventually leave. However, for those who have already become citizens and members of the household, their goal is not what they have gained, but what they can do more.
No one runs a bakery to eat more bread. They don't run a chicken restaurant to eat more chicken. Children might think that way, but adults never think that way. Because the bread in a bakery or the chicken in a chicken restaurant aren't made for the owner to eat. They are made to sell to customers.
Likewise, God's household is a people whose goal is to do God's work, not to receive something from Him. For being citizens and members of His household means that we have already received everything.
Therefore, we must recognize that we are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Through their obedience and devotion, we received the gospel, and through them, we became children of God. The one who accomplished this is Jesus Christ, and the benefits of the gospel are based solely on Jesus, the cornerstone. We must remember this and never forget that we are God's temple, following Jesus.
Think of an orchestra playing. All the members play in perfect unison under the conductor's direction. It's like a single violinist playing several violins. They begin their performances precisely and end their own. All of this is carried out through the conductor. And only when we follow that direction well do we hear the cheers and praise of the audience.
As God's temple, we have a work to do. When we seek to do this, we can do it not by doing something we must receive, but as those who have already received it. In this way, we are being built in God. Verses 21 and 22 demonstrate this.
“[Ephesians 2:21] In whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord,
[Ephesians 2:22] in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”
Already a part of the body, the fact that we are now being built into a temple means that we have work to do in the future. Being built together with Jesus in Christ Jesus to become God's dwelling place in the future signifies that God has a special will and plan. As we strive to become a part of that dwelling place, we can fulfill our roles by walking with Jesus.
When the Israelites built the tabernacle in the wilderness, they cooperated in various ways and did their best. When they settled in Canaan and David built the temple, the Israelites participated in the construction and fulfilled their roles. The temple they built was their work, and the tabernacle in the wilderness was the result of their labor. It is God who accepts it, and through such devotion and loyalty, a new nation was established in a new land.
Even now, when we do our best in God, we will become God's temple, receiving His praise and blessings. Those who spearheaded the independence movement in the United States during the early days of our nation's founding later played valuable roles when the official government was established. Even before that, they sought to participate with a love for their country, and only after the nation was truly established did they receive and fulfill their duties. When we seek to participate in God's kingdom, our role becomes clear. As we fulfill that role, we become those who are being built together with the Lord in Jesus Christ. In this process, we can encounter Jesus, who is with us.
Let us remember our place in the kingdom of God, which He has revealed to us, and become faithful participants in His work as citizens and members of His kingdom. May these wonderful words of the gospel from Ephesians overflow in our lives. I pray in the name of the Lord.
