그리스도인은 근본적으로 그리스도를 닮은 자들이라서 그리스도를 근원으로 하는 사람들입니다. 그래서 예수님이 아니고서는 그리스도인의 본질을 생각할 수 없습니다. 그리스도인의 본질이 각 그리스도인의 특별함에 근거하는 것이 아니라 가장 근원이 되시는 예수님께 근거한다는 것을 잘 기억해야 하겠습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 각 사람으로부터 예수님께로 나아갈 수 있습니다.
사람으로 시작해서 사람으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 사람으로 시작해서 예수님으로 끝나야 합니다. 예를 들면 교회생활이 사람으로 시작했다가 사람으로 끝나는 경우가 있습니다. 가족이나 친구나 사회적 관계로 교회생활을 시작했다가 바로 그 관계 때문에 교회생활이 끝날 때가 있습니다. 그것이 바로 사람으로 시작해서 사람으로 끝나는 경우입니다. 우리는 그렇게 되어서는 안 됩니다. 사람으로 시작했더라도 예수님으로 끝나야 합니다. 예수님을 따라가려고 할 때 비로소 진정한 신앙생활이 시작되기 때문입니다.
오늘 말씀은 그래서 예수님에 대해서 말하고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 성도의 신앙생활 속에서 최대의 관심사는 예수님이어야 하기 때문입니다. 20절을 보십시오.

[엡]1:21 모든 통치와 권세와 능력과 주권과 이 세상뿐 아니라 오는 세상에 일컫는 모든 이름 위에 뛰어나게 하시고”
예수님이 어떤 분이신가를 보여줄 때 하나님의 능력이 그리스도 안에서 역사하셨음을 알아야 합니다. 하나님으로서는 예수님을 죽은 자들 가운데서 다시 살리시고 하늘에서 자신의 오른편에 앉히신 것입니다. 그리고 예수님으로서는 죽은 자들 가운데서 부활하셔서 하나님의 우편이 앉으신 것입니다. 이것이 각각 말이 되는데 왜냐하면 하나님과 예수님 두분이 모두 능동적이고 적극적인 역할을 하셨기 때문입니다. 그래서 하나님은 예수님을 살리신 것이고 예수님은 하나님을 통해 비로소 특별한 사역을 이루셨습니다. 그 사역을 기뻐하고 감사할 때 우리는 관심의 방향이 유한한 인간에 머무르지 않고 영원한 하나님께로 향하게 할 수 있습니다.
구레네 사람 시몬은 예루살렘에 왔다가 로마 병정들에 의해서 강제로 예수님의 십자가를 대신 지게 되었습니다. 그는 억지로 하게 된 십자가의 짐을 지면서 예수님을 만났습니다. 그리고 예수님의 희생과 헌신을 보면서 세상의 죄를 지시고 죽으시는 어린 양되신 예수님의 모습을 깨달았습니다. 그가 나중에 예수님을 믿는 사람이 되었고 그 아들 루포와 어머니인 시몬의 아내는 로마서에서 사도 바울에 의해 특별한 문안을 받는 사람들이 되었습니다. 진정으로 예수님을 만났던 것입니다.
우리의 신앙적인 삶도 그렇습니다. 사람으로 끝나면 안 됩니다. 예수님으로 이어져야만 합니다. 그럴 때 예수님의 모습은 너무나 거룩하고 은혜로우시며 영광스러우십니다. 그 영광을 깨달을 때 예수님의 나라를 사모하며 그 나라를 간구하는 사람이 되게 됩니다. 예수님은 이 세상 뿐 아니라 오는 세상에서도 모든 이름 위에 뛰어나신 분이신 것입니다.
그 예수님을 영원토록 찬양하며 영광을 돌리는 사람들이 바로 성도요 교회입니다. 성도가 자신을 높이지 않고 예수님을 높이고 교회가 교회 자신을 드러내지 않고 예수님을 드러낼 때 비로소 예수님께 영광이 돌려집니다.

[엡]1:23 교회는 그의 몸이니 만물 안에서 만물을 충만하게 하시는 이의 충만함이니라”
예수님은 만물을 그 발 아래에 복종하게 하신 분이십니다. 그래서 만물 위에 교회의 머리가 되셨습니다. 교회는 예수님의 몸으로서 만물 안에서 만물을 충만하게 하시는 예수님을 충만하게 만드는 역할을 하게 되었습니다. 그 역할을 충실하게 잘 할 때 예수님이 만물 안에서 만물을 충만하게 하심이 온전히 드러납니다.
예수님이 만물을 충만하게 하신다는 것은 만물의 의미를 완전하게 나타내신다는 뜻입니다. 만물이 왜 존재하며 왜 창조되었으며 왜 조성되었는가는 그 만물을 만드신 창조자이신 예수님의 뜻이 있었기 때문입니다. 창조자이신 예수님께서 만물의 의미를 밝혀주실 때에 비로소 만물의 의미는 충만해지게 됩니다. 그림을 그린 화가가 자신이 그린 그림의 의미를 설명하는 것처럼 조각상을 만든 조각가가 자신이 만든 작품의 의미를 알려주는 것처럼 예수님이 만물을 알려주십니다.
교회가 해야 하는 일은 바로 그러한 예수님의 뜻을 나타내는 것입니다. 교회 자신을 높이는 것이 아니라 교회를 존재하게 하신 예수님을 드러내고 높이는 것이 바로 진정한 교회의 본질입니다. 우리도 이러한 교회 속에 있습니다. 그리고 성도로서 그러한 교회를 만들어가고 있습니다. 교회 자체는 내세울 것이 없지만 우리를 통해서 보이셨던 예수님의 놀라우신 은혜를 증거할 수 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 만물을 충만하게 하시는 이의 충만함이 되는 것입니다.
우리가 경험했던 많은 일들은 지금까지도 놀라웠지만 앞으로도 놀라울 것입니다. 그것을 계속 증거하면서 예수님을 높이는 자들이 되어야 하겠습니다. 그럴 때 우리의 본질은 만물을 충만하게 하시는 이를 따르는 자들로 나타날 것입니다. 그것이 우리의 기쁨이자 보람이 될 것입니다. 이러한 목표와 소망을 가지고 신앙 생활을 통해 예수님을 더욱 드러내는 은혜로운 신앙생활을 행하는 성도들이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Ephesians 1:20] That which his power worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
[Ephesians 1:21] Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that to come;
[Ephesians 1:22] And he put all things under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Christians are fundamentally like Christ, and therefore have Christ as their source. Therefore, we cannot conceive of the essence of Christianity without Jesus. We must remember that the essence of Christianity is not based on the uniqueness of each Christian, but on Jesus, the ultimate source. Only then can we move from each individual to Jesus.
We must not begin with people and end with them, but rather begin with them and end with Jesus. For example, sometimes church life begins with people and ends with them. Sometimes church life begins with family, friends, or social relationships, and then ends because of those very relationships. That's when we begin with people and end with them. We must not be like that. Even if we begin with people, we must end with Jesus. True faith begins only when we seek to follow Jesus.
That's why today's message speaks of Jesus. Because in the life of faith of a believer, the greatest concern must be Jesus. Look at verse 20. “[Ephesians 1:20] which he wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
[Ephesians 1:21] far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”
When we reveal who Jesus is, we must understand that God’s power worked in Christ. God raised Jesus from the dead and seated him at his right hand in heaven. And Jesus rose from the dead and sat at God’s right hand. This makes sense because both God and Jesus played active and positive roles. God raised Jesus, and Jesus accomplished his special work only through God. When we rejoice and give thanks for that work, we can direct our attention beyond finite humanity to the eternal God.
Simon of Cyrene came to Jerusalem and was forced by Roman soldiers to carry Jesus’ cross. He met Jesus while carrying the burden of the cross he was forced to carry. And seeing Jesus' sacrifice and devotion, I realized the image of Jesus as the Lamb of God, who bore the sins of the world and died. He later became a believer in Jesus, and his son Rufus and his mother, Simon's wife, received special greetings from the Apostle Paul in the book of Romans. They truly encountered Jesus.
The same is true of our lives of faith. It cannot end with people. It must lead to Jesus. Then, Jesus's image becomes truly holy, gracious, and glorious. When we realize this glory, we become people who long for and pray for Jesus' kingdom. Jesus is above every name, not only in this world but also in the world to come.
Those who praise and glorify Jesus forever are the saints and the church. When the saints do not exalt themselves but exalt Jesus, and the church does not reveal itself but reveals Jesus, only then does glory return to Jesus.
“[Ephesians 1:22] And he put all things under his feet and gave him to be head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.”
[Ephesians 1:23]
Jesus is the one who put all things under his feet. Therefore, he is the head over all things to the church. As the body of Jesus, the church has the role of filling Jesus, who fills all things in all things. When the church faithfully fulfills this role, Jesus’s filling of all things in all is fully revealed.
Jesus filling all things means completely revealing the meaning of all things. The reason all things exist, were created, and were formed is because of the will of Jesus, the Creator who created them. When Jesus, the Creator, reveals the meaning of all things, all things become fully meaningful. Just as a painter explains the meaning of his painting, and a sculptor explains the meaning of his work, so Jesus explains all things. The church's role is precisely to manifest the will of Jesus. The true essence of the church is not to exalt itself, but to reveal and exalt Jesus, who gave birth to the church. We too are in this church. And as believers, we are building such a church. While the church itself has nothing to boast about, we can bear witness to the amazing grace of Jesus, revealed through us. Thus, we become the fullness of Him who fills all things.
The many things we have experienced have been and will continue to be amazing. We must continue to bear witness to this and become those who exalt Jesus. Only then will our true nature be revealed as followers of Him who fills all things. This will be our joy and fulfillment. With this goal and hope, I pray in the name of the Lord that you may become believers who live a life of grace that further reveals Jesus through your faith.
