12월이 다가왔습니다. 예수님이 나신 성탄절을 준비하면서 예수님이 이 세상에 오셨던 때를 생각하게 됩니다. 하지만 예수님이 아기로 오셨을 때만 생각할 수는 없습니다. 이미 예수님은 우리와 함께 계시기 때문입니다. 그런 의미에서 예수님이 우리에게로 오셨을 때를 생각하면서 과거 2천년 전에 세상에 오셨던 성탄의 의미를 되새기려고 합니다. 예수님께서 십자가에서 죽으신 후에 다시 부활하셔서 이 세상에 나타나신 때를 생각해 보면 예수님이 이 세상에 처음 오셨을 때의 기쁨과 감격을 되새길 수 있습니다.
오늘 말씀은 예수님이 부활하신 후에 엠마오로 가는 두 제자에게 나타나시는 장면입니다. 이미 그전에 예수님은 마리아에게 나타나시고 베드로에게도 나타나셨습니다. 그 이후에 엠마오로 가던 두 제자에게도 나타나셨습니다. 그래서 두 제자가 예수님을 만나고 나서 엠마오로 가지 않고 방향을 바꿔서 예루살렘으로 되돌아갔을 때 예수님이 그렇게 나타나셨다는 이야기를 들을 수 있었습니다. 만약 그들이 계속 엠마오로 갔더라면 부활의 주님과는 아무 상관이 없었을 것입니다. 그것이 34, 35절 말씀입니다.
“[눅]24:33 곧 그 때로 일어나 예루살렘에 돌아가 보니 열한 제자 및 그들과 함께 한 자들이 모여 있어
[눅]24:34 말하기를 주께서 과연 살아나시고 시몬에게 보이셨다 하는지라
[눅]24:35 두 사람도 길에서 된 일과 예수께서 떡을 떼심으로 자기들에게 알려지신 것을 말하더라”
이 두 사람은 예수님을 만나고 난 다음에 곧바로 예루살렘에 돌아갔고 거기서 열한 제자와 함께 한 자들을 만났습니다. 그리고 그들에게 예수님을 길에서 만났던 사건을 이야기했는데 제자들은 예수님이 부활하셨고 이전에 이미 시몬에게 나타나셨다는 이야기를 전해주었습니다. 그래서 두 사람은 더욱 기쁨으로 자신이 예수님을 어떻게 만나게 되었는지를 말을 해주었습니다. 그리고 이 두 사람의 간증을 통해서 예수님이 부활하셨다는 것이 잘 나타나게 되었습니다.
예수님의 나타나심은 예수님을 실제로 만난 사람들과 그들의 이야기를 듣고 믿는 사람들에게 이루어진 일이었습니다. 꼭 예수님을 실제로 만나야만 예수님을 믿을 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 예수님을 만난 사람들의 경험과 고백을 통해서 예수님을 믿게 됩니다. 왜냐하면 그렇게 예수님을 만난 사람들이 다수 존재하기 때문입니다. 주님이 살아나시고 시몬 베드로에게 보이셨고 엠마오의 두 제자도 예수님을 만났었기 때문에 그들의 이야기를 듣는 다른 사람들도 그 경험을 통해서 예수님을 믿을 수 있었습니다.
이러한 믿음은 지금도 마찬가지입니다. 이 시대에도 주님을 만나는 사람들이 있고 주님을 만난 사람들의 증언을 통해서 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 있습니다. 이 모든 것은 이상한 일이 아닙니다. 속는 것도 아닙니다. 오히려 내부적으로 예수님을 만난 뒤에 증거하는 사람들이 예수님의 이야기를 듣고 믿는 사람들을 이끌 수 있게 되었습니다. 그것이 바로 예수님이 원하시는 교회 조직의 원리였습니다. 인도자가 있고 참여자가 있었던 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 이러한 방법을 통해서 예수님을 믿을 때 얻게 되는 구원이 전파될 수 있었습니다.
그렇다면 왜 하나님께서는 누구나 예수님을 직접 경험한 다음에 믿게 하시지 않았을까요? 누구든지 예수님을 직접 만나고 직접 경험하게 되면 더 잘 믿을 수 있는 것이 아닐까요? 지금도 구원받을 사람들은 그들 자신이 예수님을 직접 만나야 하지 않을까라고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그리고 그렇게 하지 않는다면 여전히 예수님을 믿을 수는 없다고 생각하는 경우도 있습니다. 직접적인 경험이나 체험이 예수님을 듣고 믿는 것보다 더 중요하다고 생각하는 것입니다. 하지만 예수님을 믿는 일에 있어서는 경험을 했다거나 체험을 했다는 것이 중요한 것이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 예수님의 제자들도 그렇게 경험을 했다고 해서 믿게 된 것이 아니기 때문입니다.
만약 경험을 하면 다 믿게 된다는 것이 맞다면 왜 가룟 유다는 구원을 받지 못했을까요? 그는 제자들 가운데서 회계를 맞아서 돈을 관리하던 자였습니다. 그러나 예수님과 생각이 맞지 않았을 때 그는 예수님을 따르기는 커녕 도리어 예수님을 대제사장들에게 밀고하는 자가 되었습니다. 그런 가룟 유다의 존재만 보더라도 예수님을 체험하고 경험한다고 해서 믿는 자가 되는 것은 아니었습니다.
그렇다면 예수님을 믿고 따르고 그분께 감사하며 그분을 위해서 살아가는 자가 되는 이유는 무엇이었을까요? 그것이 바로 엠마오로 가던 제자들의 모습 속에서 나타납니다. 30절을 보십시오.
“[눅]24:30 그들과 함께 음식 잡수실 때에 떡을 가지사 축사하시고 떼어 그들에게 주시니
[눅]24:31 그들의 눈이 밝아져 그인 줄 알아 보더니 예수는 그들에게 보이지 아니하시는지라”
예수님은 그들과 함께 음식을 잡수실 때 떡을 가지사 축사하시고 떼어서 그들에게 주셨습니다. 그리고 그들의 눈이 밝아져 예수님이신줄 알아보았는데 그 다음에는 그들에게 보이지 않으셨습니다. 그들이 예수님을 알아보았던 순간은 예수님이 축사하시고 떡을 떼어 주셨을 때였고 그때 그들이 예수님을 알아보게 된 이유는 그 떡의 의미를 다시 기억해 낼 수 있었기 때문이었습니다.
예수님은 이전에 그 떡을 떼어 주시면서 말씀하시기를 이 떡은 내 몸이라 하셨고 잔을 주시면서 이 잔은 나의 언약의 피라고 하셨습니다. 그 몸과 피를 주시는 이유는 죄사함을 얻게 하려 하심이라고 하셨습니다.
“[마]26:28 이것은 죄 사함을 얻게 하려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 바 나의 피 곧 언약의 피니라”
그들은 단지 떡을 얻어먹어서 예수님을 깨달은 것이 아닙니다. 오직 예수님이 자신들의 죄사함을 위해서 죽으셨음을 믿었기 때문이었습니다. 그것이 중요했기 때문에 지금도 예수님을 믿는 자들이 체험을 했든 체험을 하지 않았든 간에 예수님을 믿고 따르며 예수님께 감사하면서 예수님을 위해서 살아가는 자들이 되었습니다.
그러한 예수님을 다시 만났을 때 그들은 기뻤습니다. 그래서 그들은 이렇게 회상했습니다.
“[눅]24:32 그들이 서로 말하되 길에서 우리에게 말씀하시고 우리에게 성경을 풀어 주실 때에 우리 속에서 마음이 뜨겁지 아니하더냐 하고”
그들이 예수님께서 성경을 풀어 주실 때 마음이 뜨거웠던 이유는 그 성경풀이가 기발해서가 아닙니다. 그들의 마음을 뜨겁게 했던 이유는 그 내용이 바로 예수님의 구세주되심을 말씀하였기 때문입니다. 그때 예수님께서 말씀하신 내용은 이런 것이었습니다.
“[눅]24:25 이르시되 미련하고 선지자들이 말한 모든 것을 마음에 더디 믿는 자들이여
[눅]24:26 그리스도가 이런 고난을 받고 자기의 영광에 들어가야 할 것이 아니냐 하시고
[눅]24:27 이에 모세와 모든 선지자의 글로 시작하여 모든 성경에 쓴 바 자기에 관한 것을 자세히 설명하시니라”
이 말씀을 듣고 그들은 마음이 뜨거웠습니다. 왜냐하면 그 말씀에 동의가 되고 연합이 되었기 때문이었습니다. 예수님은 바로 그리스도였고 그리스도였기 때문에 고난을 받고 자신의 영광에 들어가시는 것이었습니다. 그들이 믿은 그리스도는 죄사함을 위해서 자신의 몸과 피를 버리시는 온전한 대속제물이 되시는 주님이었습니다. 그래서 그 고난에 대해서 감사하는 것이고 그 영광에 대해서 기뻐하는 것이었습니다.
오늘날 우리는 이렇게 나타난 예수님을 만나고 있습니다. 그것은 실제로 만나는 것이 아닙니다. 말씀을 통해서 만나고 있고 그 말씀에 대한 설명과 해석을 통해서 만나고 있습니다. 우리 뿐만이 아닙니다. 세계의 많은 민족들이 이러한 구세주 되신 예수님에 대해서 말씀을 읽고 듣고 배우면서 죄사함을 이루신 하나님의 아들에 대해서 기뻐하고 감사하고 있습니다. 그들이 바로 하나님의 자녀가 되고 백성이 됩니다.
다가오는 12월에 우리는 이렇게 우리에게 나타나신 일들을 생각해야 하겠습니다. 그럴 때 우리의 여정이 의미 있고 우리의 생활이 가치가 있습니다. 우리가 살아가는 시간들은 바로 우리의 구세주 되시는 예수님을 깨닫는 과정이 되었습니다. 시기마다 알려주시는 말씀을 통해 예수님을 알아가는 것이 기쁘고 우리에게 소망이 있음을 발견하는 것이 감사하며 우리와 함께 하시는 것을 알게 된 것이 마음을 뜨겁게 만듭니다.
이러한 예수님을 계속 만나면서 예수님과의 관계가 더욱 깊어지고 예수님이 이루신 영광을 생각하면서 그 영광에 함께 들어가는 하나님의 백성들이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Luke 24:30] While he was eating with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them.
[Luke 24:31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
[Luke 24:32] They said to one another, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road and while he opened the Scriptures to us?"
[Luke 24:33] They got up at that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven and those with them gathered together.
[Luke 24:34 They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!"
[Luke 24:35] And they both told them what had happened on the road, and how Jesus had broken the bread. Speaking of what was known
December is approaching. As we prepare for Christmas, the day Jesus was born, we reflect on the time when Jesus came to this world. However, we cannot simply think about the time when Jesus came as a baby. He is already with us. In that sense, as we reflect on the time when Jesus came to us, we will reflect on the meaning of Christmas, which came to this world 2,000 years ago. Thinking about the time when Jesus died on the cross, rose again, and appeared to this world, we can recall the joy and excitement of his first coming.
Today's reading is about Jesus appearing to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus after his resurrection. He had already appeared to Mary and Peter before that. He also appeared to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus later. Therefore, we hear that Jesus appeared to the two disciples in this way after they met him, but instead of going to Emmaus, they turned around and headed back to Jerusalem. Had they continued on to Emmaus, they would have had nothing to do with the risen Lord. This is verses 34 and 35.
[Luke 24:33] They got up at that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven disciples and those with them gathered together.
[Luke 24:34] They were saying, "The Lord has truly risen and has appeared to Simon!"
[Luke 24:35] The two also told what had happened on the road, and how Jesus was known to them in the breaking of bread."
After meeting Jesus, these two men returned to Jerusalem and met those who had been with the eleven disciples. They told them about their encounter with Jesus on the road, and the disciples told them that Jesus had risen and had already appeared to Simon. So the two men joyfully told how they had met Jesus. Through these two testimonies, the truth of Jesus' resurrection became clear.
Jesus's appearances were given to those who actually met him and to those who believed after hearing their stories. You don't have to actually meet Jesus to believe in him. You believe in him through the experiences and confessions of those who met him. Because there are so many people who encountered Jesus in this way. The Lord was resurrected and appeared to Simon Peter, and the two disciples at Emmaus also encountered Him, so others who heard their stories could also believe in Him through their experiences.
This faith remains the same today. Even today, there are people who encounter the Lord, and there are those who believe in Him through the testimonies of those who encountered Him. None of this is strange. It's not deception. Rather, those who internally encountered Jesus and then testified about Him were able to lead those who heard His story and believed. This was the principle of church organization Jesus desired. There were leaders and participants. Therefore, through this method, the salvation that comes through faith in Jesus could be spread.
So why doesn't everyone believe after experiencing Jesus firsthand? Wouldn't anyone be more likely to believe if they met and experienced Jesus firsthand? Even today, some may think that those who are saved must personally encounter Jesus. And some still believe that they cannot believe in Jesus unless they do. They believe that direct experience or experience is more important than hearing about and believing in Jesus. However, when it comes to believing in Jesus, having an experience or having experienced something isn't what matters. This is because Jesus' disciples didn't believe simply because they had such experiences.
If it's true that everyone believes through experience, why didn't Judas Iscariot receive salvation? He was a treasurer among the disciples, managing the money. However, when his views differed with Jesus', he not only refused to follow Him, but even betrayed Him to the chief priests. Judas's existence alone demonstrates that experiencing Jesus wasn't the only way to become a believer.
So, what motivated people to believe in Jesus, follow Him, be grateful to Him, and live for Him? This is revealed in the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Look at verse 30.
“[Luke 24:30] While he was eating with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them.
[Luke 24:31] Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. Then he disappeared from their sight.”
While eating with them, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, but then he disappeared from their sight. The moment they recognized him was when he gave thanks and broke the bread, and the reason they recognized him then was because they remembered the meaning of the bread.
Jesus had previously broken the bread and said, “This bread is my body,” and he gave them the cup, saying, “This cup is my blood of the covenant.” He said that he gave his body and blood for the forgiveness of sins.
“[Matthew 26:28] This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
They did not come to know Jesus simply by receiving and eating the bread. They believed that Jesus died for the forgiveness of their sins. Because of this importance, even today, those who believe in Jesus, whether they have experienced it or not, believe in Him, follow Him, are grateful to Him, and live for Him.
When they met Jesus again, they were joyful. So they recalled:
“[Luke 24:32] They said to one another, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road and while He opened the Scriptures to us?’”
The reason their hearts burned when Jesus opened the Scriptures to them was not because His interpretations were novel. Their hearts burned because they were filled with the very essence of Jesus’ identity as Savior. This is what Jesus said:
“[Luke 24:25] And he said to them, ‘O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
[Luke 24:26] Was not it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?’
[Luke 24:27] And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”
When they heard this, their hearts burned within them. They were united in his words. Jesus was the Christ, and because he was the Christ, he suffered and entered into his glory. The Christ they believed in was the Lord, the perfect atoning sacrifice who gave up his body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Therefore, they were thankful for his suffering and rejoiced in his glory.
Today, we meet Jesus in this way. We do not meet him in person. We meet him through the Word, and through the explanation and interpretation of that Word. It is not just us. Many people around the world are reading, listening, and learning about Jesus, the Savior, and rejoicing and giving thanks for the Son of God who accomplished the forgiveness of sins. They become God's children and people.
This coming December, we must reflect on these things that have appeared to us. Only then will our journey be meaningful and our lives valuable. The times we live become a process of realizing Jesus, our Savior. It is joyful to know Jesus through the words He reveals to us at each season. We are grateful to discover that He has hope for us, and our hearts are warmed by the knowledge that He is with us.
As we continue to encounter Jesus, our relationship with Him deepens. As we contemplate the glory He has accomplished, we pray in the name of the Lord that we may become God's people who enter into that glory together.
