성탄절이 다가오고 있습니다. 예수님의 나심을 기념하면서 우리는 예수님을 올해 마지막에 다시 만나고 있습니다. 성탄절의 시기가 올해의 마지막이기는 하지만 사실 성탄의 유래는 새해의 시작이라는 의미가 있습니다. 그래서 그리스도인들은 성탄절을 보내면서 한해를 끝내는 것이 아니라 성탄절을 보내면서 새해를 시작한다는 의미를 가져야 합니다. 예수님을 새롭게 만나면서 새해를 시작한다는 것을 생각해 보십시오. 얼마나 의미 있고 뜻깊은 시간이 되는지 모릅니다. 그래서 우리는 예수님을 올해에도 잘 만나야 합니다.

이와 같이 예수님을 잘 만나기 위해서는 예수님을 만났던 사람들의 모습을 살펴보고 그들의 생각과 사고방식을 따라가야 합니다. 예수님을 만난다는 것이 그냥 생기는 일이 아닙니다. 예수님을 만나려고 노력하더라도 만날 수 없기도 합니다. 그것은 예수님이 존재하지 않으셔서 그런 것이 아닙니다. 예수님의 존재는 우리 자신의 존재 만큼이나 명확합니다. 다만 인간의 죄성과 어리석음 때문에 깨닫지 못하는 것 뿐입니다. 자신의 문제일 뿐인데 하나님의 문제라고 오해한다면 하나님의 놀라운 사랑과 은혜를 얻을 수 있는 기회를 놓칠 뿐입니다. 그 어리석음을 깨닫고 지혜로움으로 나아가기 위해서는 어떻게 예수님을 만나야 하는가를 잘 알아야 합니다.

오늘 말씀은 많은 사람들 가운데에서 예수님을 만났던 사람을 보여줍니다. 그 사람을 제외하고는 이 땅에 오신 예수님을 만나지 못했습니다. 정확히 말하자면 예수님을 보기는 보았지만 알아차리지 못했던 것입니다. 그건 예수님을 만난 것이 아니었습니다. 정말 예수님을 만난 사람은 여기 나오는 시므온 한 사람 뿐이었습니다. 그에 대해서 성경이 무엇을 말하고 있는지 보십시오. 25절입니다.

“[눅]2:25 예루살렘에 시므온이라 하는 사람이 있으니 이 사람은 의롭고 경건하여 이스라엘의 위로를 기다리는 자라 성령이 그 위에 계시더라

[눅]2:26 그가 주의 그리스도를 보기 전에는 죽지 아니하리라 하는 성령의 지시를 받았더니”

예루살렘에 살던 시므온은 예루살렘 성전에서 태어난 지 팔일 만에 할례를 받으러 오셨던 아기 예수님을 만났습니다. 그때의 예수님은 아기일 뿐이었고 정결예식을 위해서 성전에 왔을 뿐이었지만 시므온은 예수님을 깨닫고 온전히 만날 수 있었습니다. 그는 이미 그전부터 주의 그리스도를 보게 될 것이라는 성령의 지시를 받았기 때문이었습니다. 그 지시하심의 내용은 그리스도를 보기 전에 죽지 않는다는 말씀이었지 그리스도를 보면 죽는다는 뜻이 아니었습니다. 다시 말해 반드시 보게 될 것이라는 뜻이었습니다. 이 둘은 의미가 완전히 달라지는 것이니 잘 구별해야 하겠습니다.

그가 그렇게 예수님을 그리스도로 만날 수 있었던 이유는 그에 대한 소개에서 잘 나타납니다. 그는 의롭고 경건하여 이스라엘의 위로를 기다리는 자였습니다. 그리고 성령이 그 위에 계셨습니다. 그렇게 귀한 삶을 살고 있었기 때문에 예수님을 만날 수 있었던 것입니다. 이렇게 귀한 삶의 핵심은 의롭고 경건하고 성령이 그 위에 계신다는 것이 아니었습니다. 그렇게 생각하면 그런 사람만 예수님을 만날 수 있는가라고 오해할 수 있습니다. 그것은 하나의 결과적인 모습이기 때문에 온전히 따라하기 어렵습니다. 각자의 차이가 있기 때문입니다.

하지만 그 과정이 되는 그의 생각했던 바는 따라할 수 있습니다. 언제든지 그런 생각은 우리 자신의 결실을 만들 수 있고 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 모습입니다. 바로 그는 ‘이스라엘의 위로를 기다리는 생각’을 했었습니다. 그로 인해 의롭고 경건했고 성령님의 임재가 있었으며 그리스도를 반드시 보게 되리라는 성령의 지시도 받았습니다. 우리가 올해 성탄이 다가오는 이때에 해야 하는 생각은 바로 이스라엘의 위로를 기다리는 생각입니다.

이스라엘의 위로(the consolation of Israel)는 이스라엘에 대한 위로이자 이스라엘이 받는 위로를 의미합니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘을 위로해 주시는 것입니다. 그래서 간절히 구원자이신 그리스도를 기다리는 이스라엘에게 그리스도를 보내어 주시면서 위로해 주시기를 바라는 자가 시므온이었습니다. 하나님께 소망을 두었던 자가 하나님의 위로를 얻을 수 있었습니다. 그래서 예수님을 만난다는 것은 하나님께 소망을 두는 자이어야 합니다. 하나님께 소망이 없는 자가 하나님이 존재하심을 알아서 소망을 갖는 것이 아닙니다. 원래 하나님께 소망을 갖는 자가 하나님의 존재하심을 알게 되어서 그 하나님께 소망을 갖는 것입니다. 그러니 그 하나님의 위로가 실현되었을 때 큰 기쁨을 누릴 수 있습니다.

야구를 좋아하는 사람이 야구장에 가면 기쁘고 골프를 좋아하는 사람이 골프장에 가면 즐거운 법입니다. 수영을 싫어하는 사람을 수영장에 데리고 가면 수영장은 공포의 장소일 수 밖에 없습니다. 주님을 만난다는 것은 그 전에 미리 준비가 필요합니다. 바로 주님을 통해서 구원을 받고 도우심을 얻으며 위로를 얻게 되리라는 것을 알고 있어야 합니다.

그래서 시므온이 정말 예수님을 만났을 때 그는 감격스러워 했습니다.

“[눅]2:27 성령의 감동으로 성전에 들어가매 마침 부모가 율법의 관례대로 행하고자 하여 그 아기 예수를 데리고 오는지라

[눅]2:28 시므온이 아기를 안고 하나님을 찬송하여 이르되

[눅]2:29 주재여 이제는 말씀하신 대로 종을 평안히 놓아 주시는도다”

그는 그냥 아기를 보고 지나친 것이 아닙니다. 그 아기를 안고 하나님을 찬송했습니다. 아기 예수님을 통해 하나님께서 주신 이스라엘의 위로를 기뻐했습니다. 이제 실현된 복음의 시작에 대해 감사했습니다. 종을 평안히 놓아 주신다는 것은 이제는 죽어도 여한이 없다는 뜻입니다. 이제 죽어야겠다는 말이 아닙니다. 주님의 말씀의 성취를 기뻐하는 것입니다. ‘웃겨 죽겠네’라는 말은 정말 웃기다는 말이지 이제 죽겠다는 말이 아닌 것과 같습니다. 시므온은 정말로 예수님을 만났습니다.

우리는 시므온을 보면서 그렇게 예수님을 만나야 하겠습니다. 예수님은 우리의 인생을 새롭게 하시는 분입니다. 하나님께 대한 소망과 위로를 간절히 바랬는데 그것이 정말로 이루어지게 하시는 분이 바로 예수님입니다. 그 예수님이 우리를 쉽게 죽지 않게 하셨고 쉽게 포기하지 않게 하셨으며 쉽게 끝내지 않게 하셨습니다. 그래서 기다렸고 노력했으며 애를 썼습니다. 그 모든 노력이 헛되지 않도록 도우시는 분은 바로 예수님이십니다. 그래서 우리는 예수님을 만나서 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 인생의 의미에 대한 생각이 틀리지 않았고 우리의 존재에 대한 약속이 진실했으며 우리에게 하신 말씀이 전부 이루어졌음을 알게 하실 때 우리는 예수님을 만나서 기뻐하게 됩니다.

이렇게 주님을 만나기 위해서 우리가 기다리는 것은 하나님께서 이스라엘을 위로해 주실 것을 생각해야 하겠습니다. 예루살렘에서 시므온은 예수님을 만났지만 대제사장들이나 바리새인들은 예수님을 만나지 못했습니다. 보기는 보았겠지만 무심히 지나갔습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 하나님의 위로를 기다리는 자가 아니었기 때문입니다. 그들에게는 이미 자신이 선택한 세상의 위로가 넘치고 있었습니다. 그들은 하나님을 만나려고 하지도 않았고 만나도 알아볼 수도 없습니다.

시므온이 이스라엘의 위로를 기다리면서 했던 일이 있었습니다. 그것은 성전에 들어가는 일이었습니다. 성전에서 하나님의 위로를 기다렸고 마침내 성전에서 하나님의 위로를 만났습니다. 그것이 그의 마음의 진실함을 보여줍니다. 우리도 하나님의 위로와 역사를 기다려야 합니다. 그러한 우리에게 예수님의 오심은 하나님의 위로와 역사가 이루어질 것을 확신하게 해주십니다. 예수님의 오심을 기대하고 준비하며 소망하면서 우리는 하나님의 역사하심을 사모합니다. 그런 마음이 갖고 있기 때문에 예수님과의 만남이 기다려지고 하나님의 역사의 시작을 간절히 고대할 것입니다.

작년 이맘 때의 우리의 모습을 생각해 보십시오. 올 한해 동안 주님이 이루어 주신 것은 작년의 소망과 기대를 온전히 성취해 주신 것들입니다. 이제 올해 주님께 갖는 소망을 기억해 보십시오. 그러면 내년에 하나님께서는 더욱 풍성하게 채우실 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 이스라엘에 대한 위로를 기다리는 자들이라면 하나님께서 앞으로 행하실 일은 우리가 하나님을 영원토록 찬송하게 만드는 놀라운 것이 됩니다.

오늘 말씀을 생각하면서 예수님과의 만남을 준비하고 새롭게 시작될 모든 하나님의 일을 사모해 보시기 바랍니다. 가정에서 교회에서 각자의 개인적인 삶 속에서 하나님의 위로와 역사가 넘칠 것입니다. 이러한 은혜가 우리 모두에게 넘치시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Luke] 2:25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, a righteous and devout man, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

[Luke] 2:26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

[Luke] 2:27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple courts. And the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law.

[Luke] 2:28 And Simeon took him in his arms and blessed God, saying,

[Luke] 2:29 Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word.

Christmas is approaching. As we commemorate the birth of Jesus, we meet Him again at the end of the year. Although Christmas marks the end of the year, its origins actually signify the beginning of a new year. Therefore, Christians should not see Christmas as the end of the year, but as the beginning of a new year. Think of beginning a new year by encountering Jesus anew. What a meaningful and profound time it is. Therefore, we must encounter Jesus well this year as well.

Similarly, to encounter Jesus well, we must examine the lives of those who have encountered Him and follow their thoughts and ways of thinking. Encountering Jesus doesn't happen overnight. Even if we strive to encounter Him, we may not be able to. This isn't because He doesn't exist. His existence is as clear as our own. It's simply that human sin and foolishness prevent us from recognizing it. Mistaking our own problems for God's will only lead to missing the opportunity to receive His amazing love and grace. To recognize this foolishness and move toward wisdom, we must understand how to encounter Jesus.

Today's reading reveals a person among many who encountered Jesus. Except for that person, no one met Jesus when He came to this earth. To be precise, they saw Jesus but did not recognize Him. That was not meeting Jesus. The only person who truly encountered Jesus was Simeon, mentioned here. Look at what the Bible says about him. Verse 25:

“[Luke 2:25] Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, a righteous and devout man, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

[Luke 2:26] And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.”

Simeon, who lived in Jerusalem, met the baby Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem eight days after His birth, when He came to be circumcised. At that time, Jesus was only a baby, having come to the Temple for a purification ceremony, but Simeon was able to fully recognize and encounter Jesus. This was because he had already received the Holy Spirit's instruction that he would see the Lord's Christ. This instruction meant that he would not die before seeing Christ, not that he would die after seeing Him. In other words, it meant that he would surely see them. These two meanings are completely different, so we must distinguish them carefully.

The reason he was able to meet Jesus as Christ is clearly revealed in his introduction. He was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was upon him. It was because he lived such a precious life that he was able to meet Jesus. The core of this precious life was not being righteous and devout and having the Holy Spirit upon him. If we think that way, we might misunderstand and think that only such people can meet Jesus. Because that is a result, it is difficult to completely emulate it, as each person is different.

However, we can emulate his thoughts, which formed the process. Such thoughts can always bear fruit for us, and they are pleasing to God. He had a "thought of waiting for the consolation of Israel." Because of this, he was righteous and devout, had the presence of the Holy Spirit, and received the Holy Spirit's guidance that he would surely see Christ. As Christmas approaches this year, the thought we should have is the thought of waiting for the consolation of Israel.

The consolation of Israel refers to the consolation for Israel and the consolation Israel receives. It is God comforting Israel. Therefore, Simeon was the one who hoped that God would send Christ, the Savior, to Israel, who desperately waited for Him. Only those who placed their hope in God could receive God's comfort. Therefore, to meet Jesus must be those who place their hope in God. It's not that those who have no hope in God simply recognize His existence and find hope. Those who originally placed their hope in God, upon realizing His existence, place their hope in Him. Therefore, when God's comfort is realized, they can experience great joy.

A baseball lover will be happy at the baseball stadium, and a golf lover will be happy at the golf course. If you take someone who hates swimming to the swimming pool, the pool will inevitably become a place of fear. Meeting the Lord requires prior preparation. We must know that through Him we will receive salvation, help, and comfort.

That's why Simeon was deeply moved when he truly met Jesus. “[Luke 2:27] And he came in the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,

[Luke 2:28] Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

[Luke 2:29] Lord, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word.”

He didn't simply pass by the baby. He held the baby in his arms and praised God. He rejoiced in the comfort God had given Israel through the baby Jesus. He was grateful for the beginning of the gospel that had now been realized. Dismissing a servant in peace meant that he could now die without regret. It didn't mean he was ready to die. It meant rejoicing in the fulfillment of the Lord's word. Just as the saying, "I'm laughing so hard I could die," means it's truly funny, not that he's ready to die. Simeon truly met Jesus.

As we look at Simeon, we must meet Jesus in the same way. Jesus is the one who renews our lives. We earnestly long for hope and comfort in God, and Jesus is the one who truly makes that happen. That Jesus prevented us from dying easily, from giving up easily, from ending easily. That's why we waited, tried, and struggled. It is Jesus who helps us ensure that all our efforts are not in vain. That's why we can rejoice in meeting Jesus. When He lets us know that our thoughts about the meaning of life were not wrong, that His promises regarding our existence were true, and that all His words to us were fulfilled, we rejoice in meeting Jesus.

In order to meet the Lord like this, we must remember that God will comfort Israel. Simeon met Jesus in Jerusalem, but the high priests and Pharisees did not. They may have seen Him, but they passed by indifferently. This is because they were not waiting for God's comfort. They were already filled with the comfort of the world they had chosen. They did not seek to meet God, and even if they did, they would not recognize Him.

Simeon did something while waiting for Israel's comfort: he entered the temple. He waited for God's comfort in the temple, and finally found God's comfort there. This demonstrates the sincerity of his heart. We too must wait for God's comfort and work. For us, the coming of Jesus gives us the assurance that God's comfort and work will be accomplished. As we anticipate, prepare, and hope for Jesus' coming, we long for God's work. Because we have such a heart, we will eagerly anticipate our encounter with Jesus and eagerly anticipate the beginning of God's work.

Think back to where we were last year at this time. What the Lord has accomplished this year has completely fulfilled last year's hopes and expectations. Now, let us remember the hope we have in the Lord this year. Then, God will fill us even more abundantly next year. If we are those who wait for God's comfort for Israel, what God will do in the future will be amazing, causing us to praise Him forever.

As we ponder today's message, prepare for your encounter with Jesus and yearn for all the new beginnings of God's work. God's comfort and work will overflow in our homes, churches, and personal lives. May this grace overflow to us all, I pray in the name of the Lord.
