이 겨울에 예수님의 나심을 생각한다는 것은 매우 뜻깊은 일입니다. 사실 12월 25일이 정말 예수님의 탄생일이었는가 하는 것에는 분명한 자료나 증거는 없습니다. 초대교회의 교부였던 어거스틴이 그 당시의 전승을 근거로 12월 25일이 탄생이라고 하였지만 지금까지 내려오는 확실한 근거는 없습니다. 다만 초대교회의 역사 속에서 12월 25일을 성탄절로 지켜왔던 것은 분명합니다. 원래 12월 25일은 이교도들의 태양의 탄생을 기념하는 겨울축제일이었습니다. 그 날을 기점으로 태양이 다시 커지게 되기 때문이었습니다. 그날을 기독교인들은 예수님의 탄생일로 바꿔서 지키기 시작했습니다. 그 이후로 12월 25일은 예수님의 탄생일로 기념하게 된 것입니다.

  

이제 우리가 기억해야 하는 것은 날짜의 중요성이 아니라 그 날의 의미입니다. 예수님의 태어나심은 우리로 하여금 복음의 시작을 깨닫게 하는 시간입니다. 하나님이 우리와 함께 하심을 예수님의 탄생 속에서 분명하게 알게 되기 때문입니다. 또한 예수님의 오심은 오래 전 하나님께서 약속해 주셨고 예언해 주셨던 구세주 그리스도의 탄생을 의미했습니다. 과거의 모든 말씀이 현재에 완성되면서 미래의 구원을 바라볼 수 있게 되었습니다. 그래서 우리가 그리스도의 나심을 기념하고 기뻐하는 것은 과거의 하나님의 역사하심을 받아들이는 것이고 미래에 그리스도를 통한 구원을 확신하는 것입니다. 해마다 이어지는 성탄절에 대한 깨달음을 통해서 우리는 구원으로 나아가게 됩니다.

  

그런데 그럴 때마다 그리스도인으로서 예수님의 나심에 대해 어떤 반응을 나타내었는가가 성도의 본질을 잘 보여줍니다. 그 반응이 더욱 적극적이고 참여적이었을 때 예수님의 의미와 가치가 잘 드러나게 됩니다. 이는 빛이 커지는 것과 같습니다. 또한 성도였지만 각 사람이 소극적이고 부정적이 될 때 예수님의 의미는 사라지게 됩니다. 이는 마치 빛이 사라지는 것과 같습니다. 그래서는 안 됩니다.

  

 

  

오늘 말씀에서 우리는 그 빛이 다시 빛나게 했던 사람들에 대해서 알게 됩니다. 먼저 1절을 보십시오.

  

“[고전]15:1 형제들아 내가 너희에게 전한 복음을 너희에게 알게 하노니 이는 너희가 받은 것이요 또 그 가운데 선 것이라

  

[고전]15:2 너희가 만일 내가 전한 그 말을 굳게 지키고 헛되이 믿지 아니하였으면 그로 말미암아 구원을 받으리라”

  

고린도전서의 말씀은 복음의 의미가 무엇인지를 보여줍니다. 바울은 고린도교회에 복음을 전하였는데 그 복음의 중요성을 다시 설명하고 있습니다. 그 복음의 말을 굳게 지키고 헛되이 믿지 않으면 그로 말미암아 구원을 받게 된다는 것이었습니다. 복음을 지키고 헛되게 생각하지 않으면 구원을 받게 된다는 것은 복음 속에 하나님의 약속이 있기 때문에 그 복음을 잘 지킨다면 하나님이 주시는 구원을 받게 된다는 것입니다.

  

바울이 전한 복음의 내용을 굳게 지킨다는 것은 그 복음의 내용에 따라서 살아간다는 것입니다. 그래야 지킬 수 있습니다. 복음은 복음이 나타날 때만 의미 있는 것이 아닙니다. 복음을 받아들이는 사람이 중요하고 그것이 헛되이 믿지 않는 것입니다. 그럴 때 그 복음으로 말미암아 구원을 받게 됩니다. 복음을 따르는 것은 마치 배를 타는 것과 같습니다. 그 구원의 배를 잘 타고 있으면 하나님께로 나아갈 수 있지만 자신이 여러 가지 이유로 배를 버리고 떠나간다면 결국엔 심판에 이르게 됩니다.

  

 

  

이러한 원리 속에서 예수님의 부활을 경험한 사람들은 그 누구보다도 더 복음에 열정을 가졌습니다. 그들에게 있어서 부활하신 예수님을 만난 것은 특별한 의미가 있었습니다. 단순히 예수님의 부활을 믿고 따라가는 것이 아니라 다른 사람들을 예수님께로 인도하는 역할을 하였던 것입니다. 그들의 모습을 보십시오.

  

“[고전]15:3 내가 받은 것을 먼저 너희에게 전하였노니 이는 성경대로 그리스도께서 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고

  

[고전]15:4 장사 지낸 바 되셨다가 성경대로 사흘 만에 다시 살아나사

  

[고전]15:5 게바에게 보이시고 후에 열두 제자에게와”

  

바울이 전하는 것은 그가 예수님으로부터 받은 복음에 대한 내용이었습니다. 이 복음은 그가 만들거나 지어낸 이야기가 아니라 예수님께서 그에게 전해 주신 것이고 그는 다만 받은 것을 그대로 전했던 것뿐입니다. 그것은 성경대로 그리스도께서 우리 죄를 위해서 죽으셨다는 것이고 장사 지내셨다가 성경의 약속대로 사흘 만에 다시 살아나셨다는 것입니다. 그 부활하신 일에 대해서 게바에게 보이셨고 후에 열두 제자에게도 보이셨습니다. 

  

그리고 게바나 열두 제자는 다른 사람들에게 예수님의 복음을 증거하는 역할을 맡았습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 특별한 은혜를 받아서 복음을 증거하도록 준비되었던 자들이었기 때문입니다. 분명히 하나님의 부르심을 받고 하나님의 신령한 일에 사용되는 사람이 있습니다. 모두가 그런 경험을 하는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 사람들은 그런 신령하고 경건하며 영광스러운 주님과의 만남의 경험을 못할 수도 있습니다.

  

예를 들어 몸이 불편하거나 지체가 연약하거나 심령이 혼란스러운 사람이 있다는 것을 생각해 보십시오. 우리 생활에서도 지체장애자나 맹인이나 귀가 안 들리는 사람들이 있습니다. 그런 사람들이 일상생활을 잘 해 나가도록 돕는 도우미의 손길이 있습니다. 그런 도움을 받아서 그들의 삶은 끝나거나 열악해지지 않고 살아갈 힘과 능력을 얻게 됩니다. 그런 분들이 반드시 눈이 뜨고 귀가 열려야만 살아갈 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 비록 눈이 안 보이지만 그 눈을 도와주는 사람들이 있습니다. 귀가 안 들리지만 그 청력을 도와주는 사람들이 있습니다. 그런 도움을 받고자 할 때 비로소 볼 수 있고 들을 수 있게 됩니다.

  

신앙도 마찬가지입니다. 현재 상태에서 경험만 하려는 것은 한계가 있습니다. 그 한계를 넘어서는 도움을 받고자 할 때 비로소 주님을 따라갈 수 있고 복음을 믿고 의지할 수 있습니다. 주님의 부활을 경험한 사람들을 생각해 보십시오. 주님은 분명히 부활하셨는데 그것을 경험한 사람들은 베드로가 첫 번째였습니다. 그 다음에는 제자들이었습니다. 그 뒤에도 계속해서 부활하신 예수님을 경험한 사람들이 나열되고 있습니다. 중요한 것은 베드로부터 시작해서 열두 제자들에 이어지기까지 그들이 예수님의 부활을 경험할 뿐만 아니라 증거하기를 시작했다는 점입니다.

  

 

  

그런데 베드로의 예수님의 부활에 대한 경험은 좀 특별한 면이 있습니다. 분명 베드로가 부활 후에 처음으로 예수님의 부활을 경험했다는 증거들이 있습니다. 오늘 본문 고전15장 5절에서 베드로가 먼저 예수님을 보았다고 나와 있습니다.

  

“[고전]15:5 게바에게 보이시고 후에 열두 제자에게와”

  

누가복음에도 엠마오로 가던 두 제자가 다시 예루살렘에 돌아왔을 때 베드로가 예수님을 만났다는 이야기를 들었습니다.

  

“[눅]24:34  말하기를 주께서 과연 살아나시고 시몬에게 보이셨다 하는지라”

  

그러면 분명히 베드로가 예수님을 만났던 것인데 이상하게도 부활 직후에 베드로가 예수님을 만났던 이야기는 사복음서나 사도행전에 나오지 않습니다. 어떤 대화가 오고 갔는지도 알려지지 않았습니다. 오히려 베드로가 예수님을 만났던 더 중요한 장면이 나타나 있을 뿐입니다. 그 장면은 우리가 잘 아는 바닷가에서 예수님이 베드로를 만나주신 장면입니다.

  

“[요]21:14  이것은 예수께서 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나신 후에 세 번째로 제자들에게 나타나신 것이라

  

[요]21:15   그들이 조반 먹은 후에 예수께서 시몬 베드로에게 이르시되 요한의 아들 시몬아 네가 이 사람들보다 나를 더 사랑하느냐 하시니 이르되 주님 그러하나이다 내가 주님을 사랑하는 줄 주님께서 아시나이다 이르시되 내 어린 양을 먹이라 하시고”

  

이 말씀을 보면 베드로에게는 단지 예수님이 부활하셨다는 것을 경험하는 것보다도 예수님께서 그에게 내 어린 양을 먹이라고 하신 말씀이 더 중요한 의미가 있었습니다. 그 때 그는 자신의 역할을 깨달았기 때문입니다. 그래서 그의 세 번째 예수님과의 만남이 구체적으로 알려지게 되었습니다. 그리고 그는 다른 주님을 경험한 사람들을 따라가는 자들이 아니라 다른 주님을 경험하지 못하는 자들을 이끄는 자가 되었습니다. 베드로가 부활의 주님을 만난 것은 첫 번째로 만난 것보다도 오히려 세 번째 다시 만난 것이 더 중요했던 것입니다. 베드로는 주님을 만나서 자신이 무엇을 해야 할지를 알게 되었고 바로 그 일을 잘 실천하였습니다.

  

 

  

성탄절에 주님을 만나는 사람들이 있습니다. 그들은 첫째로 주님을 정말 만나고 인도하는 자들을 따라가는 사람들입니다. 그들을 통해 성도는 주님을 진심으로 만난 자들이 될 것입니다. 또한 둘째로 사명감을 가지고 사람들을 주께로 인도하는 사람들입니다. 그들은 그래야만 주님 앞에 부끄러움 없이 나아가서 주님을 만날 수 있습니다. 우리는 이 둘 중 하나에 속해 있습니다. 우리의 신앙생활이 앞으로 더욱 예수님을 만나고 예수님께 나아가는 시간이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[1 Corinthians 15:4 That he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

  

[1 Corinthians 15:5 That he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.]

  

 

  

It is very meaningful to think about the birth of Jesus this winter. In fact, there is no clear data or evidence to support the claim that December 25th was indeed Jesus' birthday. Augustine, a church father of the early church, claimed that December 25th was the birth of Jesus, based on the traditions of his time. However, there is no definitive evidence to support this claim. However, it is clear that the early church observed December 25th as Christmas. Originally, December 25th was a pagan winter festival commemorating the birth of the sun, as it was believed that the sun would grow larger from that day forward. Christians began observing this day as the birthday of Jesus. Since then, December 25th has been celebrated as the birthday of Jesus.

  

What we must remember now is not the significance of the date, but the meaning of that day. The birth of Jesus is a time when we realize the beginning of the Gospel. God's presence with us is clearly revealed in Jesus' birth. Moreover, the coming of Jesus signified the birth of Christ, the Savior, whom God had long ago promised and prophesied. With all the words of the past fulfilled in the present, we can look forward to the salvation of the future. Therefore, when we commemorate and rejoice in the birth of Christ, we are accepting God's past work and affirming our future salvation through Christ. Through the understanding of Christmas, which continues each year, we move toward salvation.

  

However, each time we do so, how we, as Christians, respond to the birth of Jesus clearly reveals the essence of the saints. When our response is more active and participatory, the meaning and value of Jesus are clearly revealed. This is like a growing light. Furthermore, when individuals, even as saints, become passive and negative, the meaning of Jesus fades. This is like the light fading away. This must not happen.

  

 

  

In today's passage, we learn about those who brought that light back to life. First, look at verse 1. “[1 Corinthians 15:1] Now, brothers, I declare to you the gospel I preached to you, which you received, and in which you stand;

  

[1 Corinthians 15:2] by which you are also saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.”

  

The passage in 1 Corinthians reveals the meaning of the gospel. Paul preached the gospel to the church in Corinth and re-explains its importance. He says that if you hold fast to the word of the gospel and do not believe in vain, you will be saved by it. The fact that you will be saved by holding fast to the gospel and not thinking in vain means that since the gospel contains God's promise, if you hold fast to the gospel, you will receive the salvation that God gives.

  

 

  

Holding fast to the gospel Paul preached means living according to its contents. Only then can you keep it. The gospel is not meaningful only when it is revealed. What is important is the person who accepts the gospel and does not believe in vain. Only then will they be saved by the gospel. Following the gospel is like boarding a boat. If you are on the boat of salvation, you can go to God. However, if you abandon the boat for various reasons, you will ultimately face judgment.

  

 

  

In this principle, those who experienced Jesus' resurrection were more passionate about the gospel than anyone else. For them, meeting the resurrected Jesus had a special meaning. They did not simply believe in Jesus' resurrection and follow him, but they played a role in leading others to Jesus. Look at their actions:

  

“[1 Corinthians 15:3] For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

  

[1 Corinthians 15:4] that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

  

[1 Corinthians 15:5] that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.”

  

 

  

Paul was sharing the gospel he had received from Jesus. This gospel was not something he had invented or made up; it was something Jesus had given him, and he simply relayed what he had received. According to the Scriptures, Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day, as the Scriptures promise. He revealed His resurrection to Cephas and later to the twelve disciples.

  

Cephas and the twelve disciples were given the role of witnessing the gospel of Jesus to others, for they had received special grace and were prepared to bear witness. Certainly, there are those who are called by God and used in His spiritual work. Not everyone experiences this. Some may not experience such a spiritual, pious, and glorious encounter with the Lord.

  

For example, consider those who are physically challenged, physically weak, or spiritually disturbed. In our lives, too, there are those who are physically disabled, blind, or deaf. There are helpers who help these people navigate their daily lives. With such help, their lives are not ended or deteriorated, but rather, they gain the strength and ability to live. These individuals do not necessarily need to have their eyes or ears opened to survive. Even if they are blind, there are those who help them see. Even if you're deaf, there are people who help you hear. Only when you seek such help can you finally see and hear.

  

The same goes for faith. Simply experiencing things in your current state has its limits. Only when you seek help that transcends those limits can you truly follow the Lord, believe in the gospel, and rely on it. Consider those who experienced the Lord's resurrection. The Lord was clearly resurrected, and Peter was the first to experience it. Then came the disciples. After them, a list of others who experienced the resurrected Jesus continues. What's significant is that, starting with Peter and continuing through the twelve disciples, they not only experienced Jesus' resurrection but also began to bear witness to it.

  

 

  

However, Peter's experience of Jesus' resurrection is somewhat unique. There is evidence that he was the first to experience Jesus' resurrection after the resurrection. In today's passage, 1 Corinthians 15:5, it says that Peter saw Jesus first.

  

 

  

“[1 Corinthians 15:5] He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.”

  

The Gospel of Luke also tells us that when the two disciples on the road to Emmaus returned to Jerusalem, Peter met Jesus.

  

“[Luke 24:34] They said, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!’”

  

So, clearly, Peter did meet Jesus. However, strangely, the account of Peter’s encounter with Jesus immediately after the resurrection is not found in the four Gospels or the Acts of the Apostles. Nor is the conversation between them known. Rather, the more significant scene of Peter’s encounter with Jesus is depicted. That scene is the familiar scene of Jesus meeting Peter on the beach.

  

“[John 21:14] This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  

[John 21:15] When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’”

  

As we see in this passage, Jesus’ command to him to feed his lambs was more significant to Peter than simply experiencing the resurrection of Jesus. It was then that he realized his role. Therefore, his third encounter with Jesus became known in detail. He became a leader for those who had not experienced another Lord, rather than one who followed those who had experienced another Lord. Peter’s third encounter with the resurrected Lord was more significant than his first encounter. By meeting the Lord, Peter knew what he should do, and he did so successfully.

  

 

  

There are people who meet the Lord at Christmas. First, they are those who truly encounter the Lord and follow those who lead them. Through them, believers will truly encounter the Lord. Second, they are those who, with a sense of mission, lead others to the Lord. Only then can they approach the Lord without shame and meet Him. We belong to one of these two groups. In the name of the Lord, I pray that our lives of faith will become a time for us to encounter and approach Jesus more deeply.
