[엡]3:6 이는 이방인들이 복음으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 상속자가 되고 함께 지체가 되고 함께 약속에 참여하는 자가 됨이라
에베소서1,2장이 구원의 의미에 대한 예수 그리스도의 은혜를 강조하는 것이었다면 이어지는 3장은 그 은혜를 통해 얻게 되는 결실에 대해서 말하고 있습니다. 이것이 중요한 이유는 이 결실로 인해서 얻게 된 것은 바로 우리 자신의 구원과 변화를 보여주기 때문입니다. 그래서 단지 예수님을 믿음으로 구원을 얻게 된 것이 아니라 하나님의 오래 전 경륜이 이제서야 자신의 신앙고백과 복음에 동참함으로 인해서 완성되는 것을 이해하고 깨달을 수 있습니다.
말하자면 내가 처음으로 어떤 운동경기를 직접 관람하게 되었는데 그 경기는 특별히 모든 사람들이 간절히 보기를 원했던 오랫동안 기다려왔던 경기가 되는 것과 같습니다. 우리는 구원에 대한 혜택에 더 많은 관심을 갖지만 사실 우리가 받은 구원은 하나님의 놀라운 은혜의 경륜을 이루는 것이었습니다.
에베소서 3장은 이러한 은혜의 경륜을 잘 보여주고 있습니다. 1, 2절을 보십시오.
“[엡]3:1 이러므로 그리스도 예수의 일로 너희 이방인을 위하여 갇힌 자 된 나 바울이 말하거니와
[엡]3:2 너희를 위하여 내게 주신 하나님의 그 은혜의 경륜을 너희가 들었을 터이라”
‘이러므로’는 지금까지 1,2장에서 말했던 구원의 은혜가 그리스도께 있음을 의미합니다. 구원이 단순히 자신의 행위나 선행의 결과가 아니라 그리스도의 은혜에 있기 때문에 바로 그 예수 그리스도의 일을 위해서 이방인을 섬기는 일로 갇힌 바울이 그 은혜를 증거하고 있는 것입니다. 바울 자신이 이 그리스도 예수의 일이 얼마나 가치 있고 중요한지를 알고 있기 때문에 이방인을 위해서 갇히는 것을 감수하였습니다. 그리고 그것은 이방인을 위해서 바울에게 주신 하나님의 은혜의 경륜이었습니다.
이 은혜의 경륜은 ‘은혜로 이루어진 놀라운 창세 전의 계획’을 의미합니다. 그것을 이해할 수 있는 것이 아나니아에게 말씀하셨던 바울에 대한 하나님의 계획이었습니다.
“[행]9:15 주께서 이르시되 가라 이 사람은 내 이름을 이방인과 임금들과 이스라엘 자손들에게 전하기 위하여 택한 나의 그릇이라”
사도행전 9장 15절에 나오는 이 말씀이 바로 하나님의 영원한 은혜의 경륜을 이해할 수 있게 합니다. 오래 전부터 하나님께서는 예수 그리스도의 이름을 이방인과 임금들과 이스라엘 자손들에게 전하기 위하여 바울을 택하셨고 그를 예수님의 그릇으로 세우셨던 것입니다. 그래서 이방인들에게 복음을 증거하는 것이 바울에게 영광스러운 일이었고 또한 바울을 통해 복음을 듣는 것이 이방인들에게도 영광스러운 일이었습니다. 그 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜의 경륜이었기 때문입니다.
구원은 믿는 성도들이 얻는 혜택이지만 그 구원이 이루어지기 위해서 이루신 예수 그리스도의 복음은 더욱 영광스러운 은혜의 경륜입니다. 그래서 단지 나 한 사람을 위한 구원으로 생각하면 안 되고 하나님의 영광스러운 복음을 생각해야 합니다. 그럴 때 우리는 내가 노력했던 구원을 내가 획득하는 것이 아니라 하나님의 영광의 복음 속으로 들어가서 그 속에서 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 자신을 발견할 수 있습니다. 사도 바울 자신이 그러한 사람이었고 이방인들도 바로 그렇게 되기를 원했습니다.
그렇게 되기 위해서 복음에 대해서 설명할 때 그것은 하나님께서 모든 성도들에게 하시는 말씀이었습니다. 복음에 관해서는 이방인이나 유대인이나 전부 하나님의 새로운 언약의 말씀을 들어야 했기 때문에 이 말씀은 모든 믿는 자에게 주시는 새로운 약속이 되었습니다.

바울이 먼저 계시로 복음의 비밀을 알게 하셨고 그로 인해 그리스도의 비밀을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 그 그리스도의 비밀은 사도와 선지자들에게 성령으로 나타내신 것처럼 이전에 구약시대에는 알려지지 않았지만 그리스도의 부활과 승천 이후에 성령의 강림 이후에는 알게 하셨습니다. 그 이유는 성령을 통해서 예수 그리스도를 알게 하시기 위함이었습니다.
계명을 통해서 하나님을 아는 시대는 예수 그리스도의 오심을 기다리는 시간이었고 예수 그리스도께서 오셔서 모든 구원을 완성하신 다음에는 성령을 통해서 그리스도의 복음을 전파하는 시기가 되었습니다. 그래서 메시야의 오심을 기다릴 때에는 유대인들에게만 말씀이 전해졌지만 메시야이신 예수 그리스도께서 오셔서 십자가 대속을 이루신 다음에는 성령을 통해서 모든 사람들에게 하나님의 말씀이 증거되었습니다. 그것이 복음의 비밀이었습니다. 복음의 비밀이 보여주는 하나님의 은혜는 분명했습니다. 6절을 보십시오.
“[엡]3:6 이는 이방인들이 복음으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 상속자가 되고 함께 지체가 되고 함께 약속에 참여하는 자가 됨이라”
모든 이방인들이 복음으로 말미암아 유대인들과 함께 상속자, 지체, 약속에 참여하는 자가 되게 하시는 것이 그리스도 예수의 뜻이었습니다. 그래서 세상을 사랑하시고 구원하시는 하나님의 뜻이 이루어지는 것입니다. 에베소 성도들이 이것을 깨달을 때 다시 한 번 기뻐하면서 하나님의 뜻을 위해 살아갈 수 있었고 그것은 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 우리도 이렇게 하나님의 약속에 참여하기를 바랄 때 복음의 영광 속에서 살아갈 수 있습니다.
우리는 에베소서를 통해 복음의 가치를 새롭게 이해할 수 있습니다. 우리가 주의 상속자, 지체, 약속에 참여하는 자가 되게 하시는 하나님의 은혜의 경륜을 감사하고 찬양할 때 그 기쁨에 동참하는 자가 될 것입니다. 우리의 기도가 이러한 기쁨을 이루는 풍성한 것이 되게 해 달라고 간구하며 노력하는 성도들이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Outline: Exposition of Ephesians,
[Ephesians 3:1] Therefore I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles, speak:
[Ephesians 3:2 If indeed you have heard of the dispensation of God's grace which was given to me for you,
[Ephesians 3:3] that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I briefly wrote before:
[Ephesians 3:4] By which, when you read, you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ.
[Ephesians 3:5] Which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,
[Ephesians 3:6] that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
If chapters 1 and 2 of Ephesians emphasize the grace of Jesus Christ in the meaning of salvation, chapter 3 speaks of the fruit we receive through that grace. This is significant because what we receive through this fruit demonstrates our own salvation and transformation. Therefore, we understand and realize that salvation is not simply obtained through faith in Jesus, but that God's long-ago plan is now being fulfilled through our own confession of faith and participation in the gospel.
It's like watching a sporting event for the first time in person, only to discover that it's a long-awaited event that everyone has been eagerly waiting to see. While we may be more interested in the benefits of salvation, the salvation we have received is actually the fulfillment of God's amazing plan of grace.
Ephesians 3 clearly illustrates this plan of grace. Look at verses 1 and 2. “[Ephesians 3:1] Therefore I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles, speak:
[Ephesians 3:2] If indeed you have heard of the dispensation of God's grace which was given to me for you.”
“Therefore” means that the grace of salvation, which we have spoken of in chapters 1 and 2, is in Christ. Because salvation is not simply the result of one's own works or good deeds, but of Christ's grace, Paul, imprisoned for serving the Gentiles for the sake of Jesus Christ, testifies to this grace. Paul himself knew how valuable and important this work of Christ Jesus was, and so he accepted imprisonment for the Gentiles. And this was God's plan of grace given to Paul for the Gentiles.
This plan of grace refers to the "amazing plan of grace before the foundation of the world." Understanding this was God's plan for Paul, as revealed to Ananias. “[Acts 9:15] And the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and the children of Israel.’”
This passage in Acts 9:15 allows us to understand God’s eternal plan of grace. Long ago, God had chosen Paul to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, their kings, and the children of Israel, and had appointed him as a vessel of Jesus. Therefore, witnessing the gospel to the Gentiles was a glorious thing for Paul, and hearing the gospel through Paul was also a glorious thing for the Gentiles. This was all part of God’s plan of grace.
Salvation is a benefit received by believers, but the gospel of Jesus Christ, who accomplished that salvation, is an even more glorious plan of grace. Therefore, we must not think of salvation as merely for ourselves, but rather consider God’s glorious gospel. Only then can we discover that we are not simply earning the salvation we have striven for, but entering into the gospel of God’s glory and glorifying God in it. The Apostle Paul himself was such a person, and he desired that the Gentiles would be like him as well.
To achieve this, when explaining the gospel, it was God's word to all believers. Since both Gentiles and Jews had to hear the word of God's new covenant regarding the gospel, this word became a new promise to all believers.
“[Ephesians 3:3] By revelation was made known to me the mystery, as I wrote briefly before:
[Ephesians 3:4] When you read, you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ.
[Ephesians 3:5] Which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.”
Paul was the first to know the mystery of the gospel by revelation, and through it, he came to understand the mystery of Christ. The mystery of Christ, as revealed to the apostles and prophets by the Spirit, was not previously known in the Old Testament, but was made known after the descent of the Holy Spirit following Christ's resurrection and ascension. The reason for this was to enable us to know Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. The era of knowing God through the commandments was a time of waiting for the coming of Jesus Christ, and after Jesus Christ came and completed all salvation, it became a time to spread the gospel of Christ through the Holy Spirit. Therefore, while awaiting the coming of the Messiah, the Word was preached only to the Jews. However, after Jesus Christ, the Messiah, came and accomplished the atonement on the cross, the Word of God was testified to all through the Holy Spirit. This was the mystery of the gospel. The grace of God revealed in the mystery of the gospel was clear. Look at verse 6:
“[Ephesians 3:6] that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”
It was the will of Christ Jesus that all Gentiles should be heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise with the Jews through the gospel. Thus, the will of God, who loves and saves the world, is fulfilled. When the Ephesian believers realized this, they were able to rejoice once again and live for God's will, and the same is true for us. When we desire to participate in God's promise in this way, we can live in the glory of the gospel.
Through the book of Ephesians, we can gain a new understanding of the value of the gospel. As we give thanks and praise to God for His grace, which makes us heirs, members of His body, and partakers of His promise, we will become partakers of His joy. May our prayers be filled with this joy, and may we strive to become saints who strive to achieve it. I pray in the name of the Lord that you may become saints who strive to achieve it.
