[엡]2:10 우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라
에베소서는 우리가 우리의 구원을 하나님의 관점에서 바라보게 합니다. 구원의 의미를 단순히 인간인 우리 자신의 관점으로만 본다면 구원의 가치와 영광을 생각하지 못합니다. 하나님의 관점으로 우리가 받은 구원이 얼마나 귀한지를 깨달을 때에 구원으로 인해서 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 알 수 있습니다. 그것이 바로 구원의 가치와 영광을 생각하는 것입니다. 그러기 위해서 우리는 하나님께서 구원을 어떤 의미로 주셨는지를 생각해야 합니다.
종종 우리는 선물을 받을 때가 있습니다. 대개 기대를 하지 않고 받게 되기 때문에 선물을 받는 것은 큰 기쁨이 됩니다. 하지만 선물을 기대하고 있다가 받게 되면 생각 만큼 기쁘지 않고 아쉬움을 느끼게 됩니다. 왜냐하면 선물을 기대한다는 것은 선물을 원하는 것이 아니라 보물을 원하기 때문입니다. 그러니 단순한 선물은 양에 찰 수 없게 됩니다. 그래서 기쁘지 않고 아쉬움을 느낍니다.
만약 우리가 구원을 선물로 생각하지 않고 보물로 생각한다면 자신이 정당한 댓가를 주고 구입한 보상이라고 생각할 것입니다. 그러면 구원의 가치가 떨어집니다. 자신의 욕심이 들어가면 들어갈수록 하나님의 은혜가 사라지고 자신의 노력과 수고만 생각됩니다. 그러니 결국에는 그 구원의 의미가 사라지게 되는 것입니다. 그렇게 되지 않도록 하나님의 관점으로 구원을 생각해야 합니다. 그러면 구원의 가치가 커집니다. 하나님의 선물이 더할 나위 없이 귀하게 받아들여집니다. 자신은 사라지고 하나님만 남게 되었을 때 구원은 한량없으신 하나님의 영광이 됩니다. 그것이 제일 좋은 구원의 본질입니다.
오늘 말씀에서 우리는 예수님을 통해 얻게 된 하나님의 선물이 무엇인가를 보게 됩니다.
“[엡]2:6 또 함께 일으키사 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 하늘에 앉히시니
[엡]2:7 이는 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 자비하심으로써 그 은혜의 지극히 풍성함을 오는 여러 세대에 나타내려 하심이라
[엡]2:8 너희는 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라”
하나님께서는 우리를 그리스도와 함께 살리셨고 우리를 그리스도와 함께 일으키셔서 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 하늘에 앉히셨습니다. 이 모든 일을 하나님께서 우리를 그리스도와 함께 행하신 이유는 그리스도 안에 있어야만 한다는 것을 깨닫게 하심입니다. 그리스도께서 뜻하심으로 이 모든 일이 이루어졌기 때문에 우리는 예수님이 아니고서는 아무 것도 할 수 없음을 기억해야 합니다. 우리의 의지나 노력이나 열심으로 되는 것이 절대로 아닙니다.
우리는 구원을 하나님으로부터 선물로 받았습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 우리를 사랑하셨다는 뜻입니다. 그 사랑 속에 있기 때문에 예수 그리스도와 함께 그 모든 구원의 여정을 함께 할 수 있었습니다. 그런데 그 구원을 마치 자신이 구입한 하나의 티켓이라고 생각해 보십시오. 우리를 기억하시고 알고 계셔서 주신 사랑의 표현을 마치 자신이 돈주고 정당하게 산 물건으로 생각하고 그것을 통용하거나 혹은 매매하려고 한다면 사랑의 본질을 오해하는 것이 됩니다.
만약 여러분이 누군가의 결혼식에 특별히 초대를 받았다고 생각해 보십시오. 그것은 관계 때문에 받게 된 초청이었습니다. 하지만 그 초대를 다른 사람에게 양도한다고 생각해 보십시오. 아무런 관계가 없는 다른 사람이 그곳에 간다면 그곳은 사랑이 사라지고 무의미한 욕심만이 남는 장소가 되어 버릴 것입니다. 그래서 그렇게 하지 않기 위해서는 자신에게만 해당되는 초대인 것을 깨달아야 합니다. 다른 사람도 역시 관계가 있을 때만 들어갈 수 있기 때문에 자신이 초대를 거부한다면 그냥 아무도 들어가지 못할 뿐입니다. 그렇게 된다는 사실을 이해하는 것이 오히려 자신이 받은 초대의 가치를 더욱 깨닫게 만듭니다.
이러한 하나님의 구원의 의미를 생각한다면 그 다음도 생각할 수 있습니다. 바로 하나님의 구원의 관점입니다. 9절부터 보십시오.
“[엡]2:9 행위에서 난 것이 아니니 이는 누구든지 자랑하지 못하게 함이라
[엡]2:10 우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라”
여기에는 하나님이 구원을 어떻게 보시는가가 잘 나타납니다. 하나님은 행위를 통해 허락하신 것이 아니기 때문에 누구든지 자신을 자랑하지 못하게 하십니다. 그러니 우리는 자랑할 것이 아니라 경배해야 합니다. 그것이 바로 하나님이 기뻐하시는 일입니다. 또한 하나님은 우리를 만드셨고 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위해서 지으신 자들입니다. 이 일을 하나님은 창세 전에 예비하셔서 때가 되었을 때 하나님의 뜻 가운데 행하도록 부르셨습니다.
이렇게 귀한 하나님의 뜻은 가진 자로서 우리는 하나님을 생각해야 합니다. 그러면 하나님의 마음과 생각과 계획을 이해할 수 있게 되어서 하나님의 뜻을 이루고 성취하는 자가 될 수 있습니다.
강아지가 주인을 쳐다볼 때가 있습니다. 그럴 때 강아지는 자신이 원하는 것을 생각합니다. 그것이 산책이거나 간식이거나 놀이거나 그 모든 것은 강아지가 원하는 것들 뿐입니다. 그런데 인간이 하나님을 볼 때는 그렇지 않습니다. 하나님은 영광스러우시고 존귀하시며 경배를 받으시는 분이십니다. 인간의 지각으로 바로 그것이 이해 되었습니다. 그래서 하나님은 우리를 통해서 기대하시는 것은 바로 하나님을 높이며 경배하라는 것입니다.
우리가 그것을 표면적으로나 형식적으로 하지 않고 내면적으로 진실한 마음으로 할 때 하나님의 동역자들이 됩니다. 마땅히 예수님과 함께 그 모든 것을 할 수 있게 됩니다. 우리는 구원에 대한 올바른 이해로 인해서 이런 사람이 되어야 하겠습니다. 그럴 때 하나님께서 주신 구원이 얼마나 큰 선물인지를 깨닫게 될 것입니다.
사도 바울은 이것을 깨닫고 더욱 겸손해졌습니다. 자신이 깨달은 구원이 진실했을 때 하나님의 의미와 영광이 더욱 풍성해졌습니다. 우리는 결코 잊어버리지 않고 진실함으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 자들이 되어야 하겠습니다. 그럴 때 주님과 영원토록 행하게 될 것입니다. 이러한 은혜가 우리 모두에게 넘치시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Outline: Ephesians 2, God, the Essence of Salvation
[Ephesians 2:6] And raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
[Ephesians 2:7] That in the coming ages He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
[Ephesians 2:8] For by grace you have been saved, through faith—and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.
[Ephesians 2:9] Not by works, so that no one can boast.
[Ephesians 2:10] For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Ephesians helps us see our salvation from God's perspective. If we view the meaning of salvation solely from our own human perspective, we fail to grasp its value and glory. When we realize the preciousness of the salvation we have received from God's perspective, we can appreciate God's love and grace through salvation. This is precisely what it means to consider the value and glory of salvation. To do so, we must consider the meaning God gave us through salvation.
We often receive gifts. Because we usually receive them without expecting anything, receiving a gift brings great joy. However, when we expect a gift and then receive it, we often feel less joyful and more disappointed. This is because expecting a gift isn't about wanting the gift, but rather a treasure. Therefore, a simple gift can never be fulfilling. Therefore, we feel disappointed and dissatisfied.
If we think of salvation not as a gift but as a treasure, we will think of it as a reward we have purchased with a fair price. This diminishes the value of salvation. As our own desires become more prevalent, we lose sight of God's grace and focus only on our own efforts and toil. Ultimately, this salvation loses its meaning. To prevent this from happening, we must consider salvation from God's perspective. This will enhance its value and allow us to appreciate God's gift with unparalleled preciousness. When self disappears and only God remains, salvation becomes the boundless glory of God. That is the essence of the best salvation.
In today's passage, we see what God's gift we have received through Jesus is.
"[Ephesians 2:6] And raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
[Ephesians 2:7] so that in the coming ages he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
[Ephesians 2:8] For by grace you have been saved, through faith—and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God."
God made us alive with Christ, raised us with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. The reason God did all this with Christ is to make us realize that we must be in Christ. Since all this was accomplished by Christ's will, we must remember that we can do nothing without Jesus. It is absolutely not achieved by our own will, effort, or zeal.
We have received salvation as a gift from God. It means that God loved us. Because we are in that love, we can walk the entire journey of salvation with Jesus Christ. But think of that salvation as a ticket you purchased. If we think of the expression of love that God has given us, remembering and knowing us, as if it were something we had justly purchased with money, and try to use or trade it, we are misunderstanding the nature of love.
Imagine you were specially invited to someone's wedding. It was an invitation given because of a relationship. But imagine passing that invitation on to someone else. If someone else, unrelated to you, were to attend, the wedding would be a place devoid of love and filled with meaningless greed. Therefore, to avoid this, we must recognize that the invitation is meant only for us. Since others can enter only if they are also related, if we decline the invitation, no one will be able to enter. Understanding this fact will actually deepen our appreciation for the invitation we have received.
Considering this meaning of God's salvation, we can also consider another perspective: God's salvation. Look at verse 9. “[Ephesians 2:9] Not by works, so that no one can boast.
[Ephesians 2:10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
This clearly reveals how God views salvation. Because it is not granted through works, God prevents anyone from boasting. Therefore, we should not boast, but worship. This is what pleases God. Furthermore, God created us and created us in Christ Jesus for good works. God prepared this before the creation of the world, and when the time came, He called us to walk according to His will.
As those who possess this precious will of God, we must think of Him. Then we can understand His heart, thoughts, and plans, and become those who fulfill and accomplish His will.
There are times when a dog looks at its owner. At such times, the dog thinks about what it wants. Whether it's a walk, a snack, or playing, it's all just what the dog wants. But when humans look at God, it's not like that. God is glorious, exalted, and worthy of worship. This is precisely what human perception understands. Therefore, what God expects from us is for us to exalt and worship Him.
When we do this not superficially or formally, but inwardly and with sincerity, we become God's co-workers. We can truly do all this with Jesus. We must become such people through a correct understanding of salvation. Only then will we realize what a great gift God has given us—the salvation He has given us.
The Apostle Paul, realizing this, became even more humble. When the salvation he understood was true, the meaning and glory of God became even richer. We must never forget this and become those who glorify God with sincerity. Only then will we walk with the Lord forever. May this grace overflow upon us all, I pray in the name of the Lord.
