[엡]1:4 곧 창세 전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하사 우리로 사랑 안에서 그 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시려고
[엡]1:5 그 기쁘신 뜻대로 우리를 예정하사 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 자기의 아들들이 되게 하셨으니
[엡]1:6 이는 그가 사랑하시는 자 안에서 우리에게 거저 주시는 바 그의 은혜의 영광을 찬송하게 하려는 것이라
에베소서는 성도의 생활과 교회의 의미를 설명하는 성경말씀입니다. 에베소 지역의 성도들은 하나님 말씀에 대한 간절함과 사모함이 있었기 때문에 그들은 하나님의 말씀을 더욱 깊이 알기를 원하였고 그러한 그들에게 옥중서신으로 보내진 에베소서는 성도의 생활과 교회의 의미를 잘 설명하고 있습니다. 하나님의 뜻과 계시에 대한 간절함이 있을 때 하나님의 오묘한 부르심의 원리가 더욱 잘 설명되어진 것입니다.
이러한 말씀에 대한 사모함은 우리에게도 마찬가지입니다. 그러한 은혜를 우리도 누리고자 할 때 하나님께서는 풍성하게 채워주십니다. 그래서 우리로 하여금 세상에 대한 환상을 버리고 하나님 나라에 대한 확신으로 충만하게 되기를 원하시는 것입니다. 이러한 하나님의 뜻을 잘 따라간다면 하나님 나라의 소망과 기쁨으로 우리의 삶이 더욱 풍성하게 채워질 것입니다.
오늘 말씀 1,2절에서는 하나님의 말씀에 대해 사모함을 가지고 있는 성도들에 대한 축복이 무엇인지가 잘 나타나 있습니다.
“[엡]1:1 하나님의 뜻으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수의 사도 된 바울은 에베소에 있는 성도들과 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 신실한 자들에게 편지하노니
[엡]1:2 하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 있을지어다”
편지글의 의례적인 문안인사로 본다면 그 가치가 반감되어질 것입니다. 이 자체를 하나의 축복이라고 보십시오. 그러면 에베소 성도들과 그리스도 안에 있는 성도들에게 어떤 하나님의 놀라우신 축복이 있을지를 알 수 있습니다. 그것은 하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 오는 은혜와 평강이었습니다. 성도들에게는 이러한 축복이 실현 가능성이 있고 놀라운 가치가 있는 것이었습니다. 하나님이 자신들을 결코 잊어버리시지 않고 늘 돌보아 주신다는 말씀의 의미가 됩니다.
이 은혜와 평강을 받은 자로서 다시 하나님을 의지하고 그리스도를 따를 때 그러한 사람은 신실한 자들이라는 것을 알아야 하겠습니다. 그 신실함은 모든 하나님의 은혜의 중요한 특징입니다. 그러니 신앙생활을 할 때 신실함으로 하나님이 주시는 모든 은혜를 잘 누리는 자들이 되어야 하겠습니다.
여기에 이어지는 에베소서 1장 3절부터 6절은 신실한 성도들에게 은혜와 평강을 주시는 근본적인 목적과 이유를 보여주고 있습니다.
“[엡]1:3 찬송하리로다 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께서 그리스도 안에서 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주시되
[엡]1:4 곧 창세 전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하사 우리로 사랑 안에서 그 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시려고

근본적인 목적은 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주셔서 예수 그리스도로 말미암은 하나님의 자녀들이 되게 하기 위함이었습니다. 그리고 그렇게 하시는 이유는 하나님의 은혜의 영광을 찬송하게 하는 것이었습니다. 이러한 목적과 이유를 성도들이 잘 깨닫고 기억하는 것이 중요합니다. 왜냐하면 신앙은 전적으로 자신을 위한 것이 아니라 하나님을 위한 것이고 그럴 때 하나님의 온전한 사람들이 될 수 있기 때문입니다.
그 가치를 깨달으면 깨달을 수록 자기 중심적인 삶을 살지 않고 하나님 중심적인 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 그리고 그렇게 사는 것이 얼마나 중요하고 귀한 삶인가를 알아갈 수 있습니다. 성도들의 변화된 모습의 좋은 예는 자신이 받은 구원이 얼마나 귀한 것인가를 깨달으면서 더욱 신실한 하나님의 사람이 되어 가는 것입니다. 그렇지 않으면 구원의 가치를 이해하지 못하면서 하나님의 사람이 되는 것을 주저하거나 거부할 수 있습니다.
초등학교에 입학해서 적응을 잘 못하는 어린아이들의 경우에 종종 이런 모습을 발견할 수 있습니다. 그 이전의 생활인 유치원 생활이나 가정에서의 생활과 학교 생활이 완전히 다르기 때문에 학교 생활을 하면서 힘들어 하거나 예전 유치원생 시절의 모습을 자꾸 그리워하는 것입니다.
그렇다면 학교의 의미와 가치를 잘 이해할 필요가 있습니다. 그것은 모습은 달라졌지만 목적은 분명합니다. 바로 성장과 발전을 이루기 위한 과정인 것입니다. 이런 목적을 잘 이해하지 못한다면 이 목적에 대한 설명과 이해를 계속 쌓아서 이 의미를 잘 깨닫고 수용하며 활용하는 것이 중요합니다. 그럴 때 학교생활 속에서 놀라운 발전과 진보를 이룰 수 있습니다.
다른 예로 미래의 직업에 대한 소망을 가지고 직업학교나 기술학교에 들어가는 경우가 있습니다. 그러면 그 직업학교에서 잘 배우고 났을 때 훌륭한 일꾼으로 서게 됩니다. 우리가 하나님의 은혜를 받는 것에는 그런 의미가 있습니다. 그 은혜를 통해 거룩하고 흠없는 온전한 하나님의 자녀가 될 수 있습니다. 또한 하나님의 은혜의 영광을 찬송할 수 있습니다. 우리의 인생이 가치가 있게 되는 것입니다.
사도 바울이 이런 말씀을 증거한다는 것 자체가 그가 깨달은 인생의 변화를 보여줍니다. 그는 과거에 예수님 믿는 자들을 핍박하던 자였습니다. 그러나 예수님을 만나고 나서 그의 삶은 완전히 변했습니다. 예수님을 누구보다도 열심히 전파하는 자가 된 것입니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 우리를 변화시키신 하나님을 진실하게 믿고 따르고 은혜와 평강을 잘 누려야 하겠습니다. 그러면 하나님의 온전한 자녀들이 될 수 있습니다. 또한 그 은혜의 영광을 찬송하는 자가 됩니다.
오늘도 우리의 기도를 통해서 하나님의 영광을 찬송하는 자가 되게 해달라고 간구하며 기도하고 실천하는 성도들이 되시기를 축원합니다.

Outline: Exposition of Ephesians, The Meaning and Purpose of the Church
[Ephesians 1:1] Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:
[Ephesians 1:2] Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
[Ephesians 1:3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly places with every spiritual blessing in Christ,
[Ephesians 1:4] Just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him in love.
[Ephesians 1:5] Having predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
[Ephesians 1:6] To the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely bestowed upon us in the Beloved.
Ephesians is about the life of the saints and the church. This is a Bible verse that explains the meaning. The believers in Ephesus had a fervent desire and longing for God's Word, so they desired to understand it more deeply. The book of Ephesians, written to them as a prison letter, clearly explains the meaning of the life of the believers and the church. When we yearn for God's will and revelation, the mysterious principles of His calling become even more clearly explained.
This longing for the Word applies to us as well. When we seek to experience this grace, God abundantly fills us. Therefore, He wants us to cast off worldly illusions and be filled with confidence in His kingdom. If we faithfully follow this will of God, our lives will be filled more abundantly with the hope and joy of His kingdom.
Verses 1 and 2 of today's reading clearly reveal the blessings that await believers who yearn for God's Word. “[Ephesians 1:1] Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:
[Ephesians 1:2] Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
If we view this letter as a formal greeting, its value will be diminished. See it as a blessing in itself. Then we can see what amazing blessing God has for the saints in Ephesus and for those in Christ. It was grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. For the saints, this blessing was both realizable and of incredible value. It signifies that God never forgets them but always cares for them.
We must recognize that those who have received this grace and peace, when they rely on God and follow Christ, are faithful. This faithfulness is a key characteristic of all God's grace. Therefore, in our lives of faith, we must be faithful and enjoy all the grace God gives. Ephesians 1:3-6, which follows, reveals the fundamental purpose and reason for granting grace and peace to faithful believers.
“[Ephesians 1:3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly places in Christ with every spiritual blessing,
[Ephesians 1:4] just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him in love,
[Ephesians 1:5] having predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
[Ephesians 1:6] to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely bestowed upon us in the Beloved.”
The fundamental purpose was to grant us all spiritual blessings in heaven, making us children of God through Jesus Christ. And the reason for this was to praise the glory of God’s grace. It is important for believers to understand and remember this purpose and reason. Because faith is not solely for oneself, but for God, and only then can one become a complete person of God.
The more one realizes this value, the more one can live a God-centered life, not a self-centered one. And one can realize how important and precious it is to live that way. A good example of the transformation of believers is when they realize the preciousness of the salvation they have received and become more faithful to God. Otherwise, they may hesitate or refuse to become God's people because they do not understand the value of salvation.
This is often observed in children who have difficulty adjusting to elementary school. Because school life is completely different from their previous lives, such as kindergarten or home life, they struggle with school life or long for their kindergarten days.
Then, it is crucial to understand the meaning and value of school. While its form may have changed, its purpose is clear: it is a process for growth and development. If this purpose is not fully understood, it is crucial to continue to understand and understand this purpose, to fully understand, accept, and utilize its meaning. Only then can they achieve remarkable growth and progress in their school lives. Another example is someone who enters a vocational or technical school with aspirations for a future career. Then, after successfully completing their studies at that vocational school, they become excellent workers. This is the meaning of receiving God's grace. Through that grace, we can become holy, blameless, and perfect children of God. Furthermore, we can praise the glory of God's grace. Our lives become valuable.
The very fact that the Apostle Paul testifies to these words demonstrates the transformation he experienced in his life. He had once persecuted believers in Jesus. However, after encountering Jesus, his life was completely transformed. He became a more zealous preacher of Jesus than anyone else. The same is true for us. We must truly believe in and follow the God who has transformed us, and fully enjoy His grace and peace. Then we can become perfect children of God. We also become those who praise the glory of His grace.
Today, I pray that through our prayers, we may become believers who praise the glory of God, praying and practicing.
