49엡 4; 19-24 그들과 다른 새 사람을 입으라_5

[엡]4:21 진리가 예수 안에 있는 것 같이 너희가 참으로 그에게서 듣고 또한 그 안에서 가르침을 받았을진대

[엡]4:22 너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고

[엡]4:23 오직 너희의 심령이 새롭게 되어

[엡]4:24 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라

그리스도인이 새로운 생활을 살아간다는 것은 세상 사람들이 새로운 삶을 살아간다는 것과 질적으로 다릅니다. 세상 사람들의 경우에는 자신의 의지와 노력으로 원하는 모습을 만들어 나가는 것이지만 그리스도인들은 예수 그리스도를 닮아가는 것입니다. 그래서 육신의 자신을 버리고 점차 그리스도의 모습으로 변해가는 것을 의미합니다. 그렇게 되면 결과적으로 세상 사람들은 더욱 세속적이 되어가지만 성도들은 더욱 신앙적이 되어 갑니다. 그러면 그것이 신의 성품에 참여하는 것이고 그러면서 성화가 이루어집니다.

이러한 변화의 과정은 목적지를 다르게 만듭니다. 성도는 구원과 영화를 위해서 살아가면서 하나님의 나라에 합당하게 변화됩니다. 하지만 세상 사람들은 심판과 멸망을 향해서 나아가면서 결국에는 하나님의 심판대 앞에 서게 됩니다. 착해 보이고 선해 보이고 아무 잘못도 없어 보이지만 하나님이 없다고 하기 때문에 그런 모습조차도 자신을 자랑하는 악한 것이 됩니다. 세상에서도 비슷한 일이 일어납니다. 기부도 많이 하고 자선도 많이 하고 선행도 많이 했다 하더라도 뇌물을 받고 부정축재를 하고 남용을 하며 범죄를 저질렀다면 그 모든 일들이 전부 악한 것으로 변해버립니다. 그래서 이전의 선행과 상관없이 그 잘못으로 인해서 심판을 받게 되는 것입니다. 하나님 앞에서의 인간의 모습이 그렇습니다. 하나님의 다스리심을 거부하고 모든 것을 자기의 소유인양 살아갔던 죄인의 모습은 하나님의 심판의 대상일 뿐입니다.

에베소서 4장 19절 말씀은 그러한 세상 사람들의 악행의 본질을 보여줍니다.

“[엡]4:19 그들이 감각 없는 자가 되어 자신을 방탕에 방임하여 모든 더러운 것을 욕심으로 행하되”

그들은 하나님께 대한 감각이 없었을 때 방탕에 빠져서 모든 더러운 것을 욕심을 행하였습니다. 방탕에 방임하였다는 것은 스스로를 지키려고 한 것이 아니라 망가뜨리려고 했다는 것을 의미합니다. 그 이유는 그것이 더 큰 쾌락과 즐거움을 주었기 때문입니다. 바로 모든 더러운 것을 욕심으로 행한 것입니다. 더러운 것을 할 수 있는 이유는 것이 주는 욕심의 만족이 있었기 때문에 그렇게 할 수 있었습니다.       

에베소 도시에는 항구도시로 번화한 면도 있었지만 여러 부류의 사람들의 드나들면서 생기는 추악한 모습도 많이 있었습니다. 우상숭배나 문란한 성윤리나 기타 다양한 죄악의 모습이 있었습니다. 그런 것을 배격하면서 하나님의 자녀로 살기 위해서는 단순히 자신의 판단기준에 따른 도덕은 아무 의미가 없었습니다. 오직 예수님을 닮아 나가는 하나님의 기준만이 의미가 있었습니다. 그것을 20,21절이 보여줍니다.

“[엡]4:20 오직 너희는 그리스도를 그같이 배우지 아니하였느니라

[엡]4:21 진리가 예수 안에 있는 것 같이 너희가 참으로 그에게서 듣고 또한 그 안에서 가르침을 받았을진대”  

그리스도는 그렇게 방탕에 자신을 방임하거나 더러운 것을 욕심으로 행하지 않으셨습니다. 그래서 예수 그리스도 안에 진리가 있는 것입니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람들이라면 누구나 예수님에게서 듣고 그 안에서 가르침을 받았습니다. 그러니 가장 신실하게 사셨던 예수님의 모습을 따라가고자 할 때 온전한 모습이란 바로 예수님을 닮아가는 것입니다. 예수님을 따르는 것은 단순히 행동만 따르는 것이 아닙니다. 그 행동을 가능하게 하는 마음을 통해 가능해집니다. 예수님은 이 세상에 잠깐 오셨다가 가신 우리의 아버지이십니다.

그 예수님을 따라가려고 할 때 그렇게 할 수 있는 방법은 성령님을 통해서입니다. 성령님께서는 우리에게 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫고 그것을 따를 수 있도록 인도하십니다. 그 인도하심을 따를 때 비로소 예수님을 닮아가는 것입니다. 성령을 따르지 않고 예수님을 따를 수 없는데 성령은 예수님을 이 시대에 우리의 삶 속에서 어떻게 따를 수 있는가를 생각나게 하시기 때문입니다. 말씀이 단순히 우리 자신의 이해 만으로 이 시대에 해석되는 것이 아니라 성령의 역사 속에서 그것을 자신의 삶 속에 해석해 주시기 때문에 그대로 따를 수 있습니다. 그것이 바로 예수님에게서 듣고 예수님에게서 가르침을 받는다는 온전한 의미입니다. 성령을 통해 예수님의 가르침을 받게 될 수 있습니다. 이것은 에베소서 1장에서 말했던 것이기도 합니다.

“엡1:17   우리 주 예수 그리스도의 하나님, 영광의 아버지께서 지혜와 계시의 정신을 너희에게 주사 하나님을 알게 하시고”

지혜와 계시의 정신이 바로 성령의 역사하심이고 그 역사하심을 통해서 우리는 각각의 상황에서 어떻게 해야 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫고 예수님의 은혜를 알게 되는지를 이해할 수 있습니다. 그 도우심이 아니라면 아무 것도 할 수가 없거나 하더라도 세상 사람들의 욕심으로 인해 모든 더러운 것을 행하는 일을 따라갈 수 밖에 없습니다.

예수님께서는 그 모든 세상적인 것을 버리시고 오직 하나님을 따라가셨고 그로 인해서 영원한 생명의 구세주가 되셨습니다. 우리도 하나님을 따라갈 때 성령의 인도하심으로 말미암아 그리스도를 닮은 영원한 생명의 구원받은 자가 될 것입니다. 그러한 소망을 마음에 품고 나아갈 때 우리의 삶은 점차 그리스도를 닮은 그리스도 안의 새 생명을 얻게 됩니다. 또한 그 생명으로 다른 사람을 인도해 낼 수 있습니다. 예수님이 그렇게 사셨기 때문에 그분을 본받은 우리도 그렇게 되는 것입니다.  그래서 주님은 우리가 새로운 사람을 입기를 원하십니다. 22절부터 보십시오.

“[엡]4:22 너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고

[엡]4:23 오직 너희의 심령이 새롭게 되어

[엡]4:24 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라”

 옛 사람을 벗어버리고 새 사람을 입어야 합니다. 그것은 심령이 새롭게 되어 하나님을 따르는 의와 진리의 거룩함을 가지고 있는 새 사람입니다. 또한 그것이 예수님을 닮아 예수님께로 성화되어 나아가는 거룩한 성도가 되는 법이기도 합니다.

이 말씀을 기억하고 앞으로도 계속해서 하나님이 예비하신 그리스도를 닮아가는 놀라운 성도가 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Overview: The Appearance of God's Children Different from the People of the World, #74 Godliness

[Eph] 4:19 They became insensitive, giving themselves over to debauchery, and committing all kinds of impurity with greed.

[Eph] 4:20 But you did not learn Christ in that way.

[Eph] 4:21 As the truth is in Jesus, so you have truly heard from him and been taught in him.

[Eph] 4:22 Put off the old self, which is corrupted by lustful desires,

[Eph] 4:23 But be renewed in your spirit,

[Eph] 4:24 and put on the new self, created in righteousness and holiness according to God.

Living a new life as a Christian is qualitatively different from living a new life as people of the world do. While people of the world shape their desired image through their own will and effort, Christians strive to resemble Jesus Christ. This means discarding the fleshly self and gradually transforming into the likeness of Christ. Consequently, while people of the world become more secular, believers become more spiritual. This constitutes participation in the divine nature, and through it, sanctification is achieved.

This process of transformation sets a different destination. Believers live for salvation and glorification, becoming transformed to be worthy of the Kingdom of God. However, people of the world march toward judgment and destruction, eventually standing before God's judgment seat. Even if they appear good, virtuous, and blameless, because they deny the existence of God, even such appearances become an evil act of self-boasting. A similar phenomenon occurs in the world. Even if one has made many donations, performed great charity, and done many good deeds, if they have accepted bribes, accumulated ill-gotten wealth, abused power, or committed crimes, all those actions turn into evil. Therefore, regardless of past good deeds, they are judged for those wrongdoings. This is the state of humanity before God. The image of a sinner who rejects God's rule and lives as if everything belongs to them is merely an object of God's judgment.

Ephesians 4:19 reveals the essence of the evil deeds of such people in the world.

“[Eph] 4:19 They became insensitive and gave themselves over to debauchery, committing all kinds of impurity with greed.”

When they lacked sensitivity toward God, they fell into debauchery and committed all kinds of impurity with greed. Giving themselves over to debauchery means that they did not try to protect themselves, but rather tried to destroy themselves. The reason is that it provided greater pleasure and enjoyment. They committed all kinds of impurity with greed. They were able to do so because there was the satisfaction of greed that such things provided.

While the city of Ephesus was a bustling port city, there were also many ugly aspects resulting from the comings and goings of various kinds of people. There was idolatry, immoral sexual ethics, and various other forms of sin. To live as a child of God while rejecting such things, morality based merely on one's own standards of judgment was meaningless. Only God's standard of becoming like Jesus held meaning. Verses 20 and 21 demonstrate this.

“[Eph] 4:20 But you did not learn Christ in that way.

[Eph] 4:21 As the truth is in Jesus, so if you have truly heard from Him and been taught in Him.”

Christ did not abandon Himself to such debauchery or act impurely out of greed. That is why the truth is in Jesus Christ. Anyone who believes in Jesus has heard from Him and been taught within Him. Therefore, when seeking to follow the example of Jesus, who lived most faithfully, the perfect image is precisely becoming like Jesus. Following Jesus is not merely following His actions; it is made possible through the heart that enables those actions. Jesus is our Father who came into this world briefly and then departed.

When we seek to follow that Jesus, the way to do so is through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guides us to realize God's will and to follow it. It is only when we follow that guidance that we truly come to resemble Jesus. We cannot follow Jesus without following the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit reminds us how to follow Jesus in this age and in our lives. We can follow the Word exactly as it is because it is not interpreted in this age solely through our own understanding, but rather interpreted within our lives through the working of the Holy Spirit. That is the full meaning of hearing from Jesus and receiving instruction from Him. We can receive the teachings of Jesus through the Holy Spirit. This is also what was mentioned in Ephesians chapter 1.

“Eph 1:17 The God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, has given you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, that you may know God.”

The spirit of wisdom and revelation is precisely the working of the Holy Spirit, and through that working, we can understand how to realize God's will and know the grace of Jesus in each situation. Without that help, we would be unable to do anything, or even if we did, we would be forced to follow the defilement of all worldly people due to their greed. Jesus cast aside all worldly things and followed only God, and through this, He became the Savior of eternal life. When we also follow God, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will become saved ones of eternal life who resemble Christ. As we move forward with such hope in our hearts, our lives gradually gain a new life in Christ, resembling Him. Furthermore, we can lead others with that life. Because Jesus lived that way, we who imitate Him become so. Therefore, the Lord desires that we put on the new man. Look starting from verse 22.

“[Eph] 4:22 You must put off the old man, which is corrupted by lustful desires,

[Eph] 4:23 But be renewed in your spirit,

[Eph] 4:24 and put on the new man, created in the image of God in righteousness and holiness of truth.”

We must put off the old man and put on the new man. It is a new man whose spirit has been renewed, possessing the holiness of righteousness and truth that follows God. Furthermore, this is also the way to become a holy saint who resembles Jesus and moves toward Him through sanctification.

Remembering these words, I pray in the name of the Lord that you continue to become an amazing saint who resembles Christ, whom God has prepared.
