[막]13:35 그러므로 깨어 있으라 집 주인이 언제 올는지 혹 저물 때일는지, 밤중일는지, 닭 울 때일는지, 새벽일는지 너희가 알지 못함이라

[막]13:36 그가 홀연히 와서 너희가 자는 것을 보지 않도록 하라

[막]13:37 깨어 있으라 내가 너희에게 하는 이 말은 모든 사람에게 하는 말이니라 하시니라

이 세상은 많은 유혹과 속임수가 존재하는 세상입니다. 그래서 정신을 바짝 차리지 않으면 눈뜨고 코 베어가는 세상이 되었습니다. 나라에서는 그런 속임수와 거짓에 속아 넘어가지 않도록 많은 홍보와 안전장치 등을 마련해 놓았습니다. 하지만 아무리 정책적으로 도움을 주려고 한다 해도 개개인이 정신을 바짝 차리지 않으면 그런 모든 안전장치를 스스로 다 해제한 다음에 사기를 당하게 되어 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그게 사기인줄을 모르고 생각하게 만들었기 때문입니다. 우리는 이러한 위험성을 자각하고 정신을 바짝 차려야 하겠습니다.

오늘 우리가 보는 마가복음 13장의 말씀에서 예수님께서 말씀하시는 것이 바로 그것입니다. 주의하라, 깨어있으라 이 말씀은 그냥 하는 말이 아닙니다. 정신을 바짝 차리고 주의깊게 생각해서 속지 않도록 하시려는 예수님의 간절한 바램과 의지가 담겨져 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 이 말씀을 보면서 예수님의 뜻을 잘 따라야 겠구나라고 생각해야 합니다. 그럴 때 우리 자신이 안전해지고 우리와 함께 있는 사람들이 안전하게 됩니다. 33절을 보십시오.

“[막]13:33 주의하라 깨어 있으라 그 때가 언제인지 알지 못함이라

[막]13:34 가령 사람이 집을 떠나 타국으로 갈 때에 그 종들에게 권한을 주어 각각 사무를 맡기며 문지기에게 깨어 있으라 명함과 같으니”

예수님께서는 신앙적으로 주의하고 깨어 있으라고 하셨습니다. 그 때가 언제인지 알지 못함이라고 하셨습니다. 그 때란 심판의 때요, 말세의 때입니다. 13장에서 예수님께서 말씀하신 것이 전부 그 심판의 때에 대한 이야기 였습니다. 그런데 그 심판의 때는 그 때만 잘 맞춰서 대비하는 것이 아니었습니다. 평상시에 잘 해야만 했습니다. 때를 맞출 수 없기 때문에 상시 대비를 하는 것이 중요했습니다. 그것은 마치 주인이 집을 떠나 타국으로 가면서 자리를 비울 때 종들에게 사무를 맡기고 문지기에게 깨어서 잘 지키라고 명한 것과 같았습니다. 주인이 없을 때에도 계속 잘해야만 했던 것입니다.

이렇게 깨어 있으라고 하신 것은 마가복음 14장에서 겟세마네 동산에서 제자들에게 시험에 들지 않게 깨어 있어 기도하라고 하신 것과 같습니다. 정신을 차리지 않으면 언제 시험에 드는지 모르게 시험에 들게 됩니다. 어느 새 하나님이 원하시는 것보다 내가 원하는 것을 하고 있습니다. 심지어는 내가 원하는 것이 하나님이 원하시는 것이라고 오해하고 있기도 합니다. 종들에게 사무를 맡겨서 주인이 없을 때에도 잘 할 수 있게 하는 것이나 문지기에게 깨어 있어서 문을 잘 지키라고 하는 것이나 모두 주인이 원하는 것을 하는 일들입니다. 그런데 주인이 없다 보면 그걸 내가 원하는 것으로 바꿀 수가 있게 됩니다.

예수님께서 말씀하시는 것은 그냥 잠을 자지 말라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 의식적으로 그렇게 이기적이 되고 주관적이 되고 하나님의 일에 소홀하게 되는 것을 경계하라는 뜻이었습니다. 마가복음 13장 시작에서 예수님은 성전 건물이 무너지게 될 것을 말씀하셨습니다.

“[막]13:1    예수께서 성전에서 나가실 때에 제자 중 하나가 이르되 선생님이여 보소서 이 돌들이 어떠하며 이 건물들이 어떠하니이까

[막]13:2     예수께서 이르시되 네가 이 큰 건물들을 보느냐 돌 하나도 돌 위에 남지 않고 다 무너뜨려지리라 하시니라”

성전은 하나님의 전이었지만 이스라엘 백성들은 그 전을 자신의 전으로 만들었습니다. 그러니 하나님의 아들이시자 성전의 본체 되시는 예수님이 오셨을 때에 그들은 예수님을 죽였습니다. 이는 성전이 무너진 것과 같습니다. 또한 역사적으로도 AD 70년 로마의 티투스 장군에 의해서 예루살렘 성전은 완전히 파괴되었습니다. 그들이 자신의 욕심에 눈이 멀었을 때 하나님의 아들도 죽였고 자신의 성전도 다 잃어버렸던 것입니다. 

이 말씀이 오늘날 우리에게도 중요합니다. 세상은 보이스피싱을 주의하며 깨어 있으라고 말하지만 우리는 불신앙을 주의해야 합니다. 또한 세속화를 주의해야 합니다. 하나님의 원을 따르지 않고 자신의 원을 따르려는 마음을 경계해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 또 다른 범죄이기 때문입니다. 하나의 선택으로 받아들여지는 것이 아니라 그 자체가 새로운 죄가 됩니다.

인간의 죄의 본질을 생각해 보십시오. 아담 이후로 모든 인간이 죄인이 되었는데 그 본질에는 자기 소견에 옳은 대로 행한다는 것입니다. 아담도 선악과를 따먹지 말라는 하나님의 계명이 있었지만 자기가 원하는 것을 더 하고 싶었기 때문에 하지 말라는 하나님의 원하심을 어기고 자기가 원하는 선악과를 따먹는 일을 했습니다. 그래서 범죄하게 된 것입니다. 지금도 하나님이 하지 말라는 일을 내가 원하기 때문에 하면서 인간은 죄인이 됩니다. 그 죄를 예수님이 사해 주셨지만 그 죄사함을 믿으라는 하나님의 원하심을 거부하면서 내가 원하는 대로 믿지 않겠다는 것을 택하면서 죄인이 됩니다. 결국 죄사함을 거부하면서 심판을 받게 되는 것입니다.

우리가 이것을 깨달을 때 성전을 나의 성전으로 만들지 않고 하나님의 성전으로 만들면서 하나님의 때를 준비하는 것임을 알 수 있습니다. 종들이 권한을 받아 사무를 하고 문지기가 임무를 받아 문을 지킬 때 본질적으로 주인의 집을 나의 집으로 만드는 것이 아니라 주인의 집을 주인의 집으로 만들 때 비로소 주인 앞에 부끄러움이 없는 자가 될 수 있습니다.

이제 이것을 우리가 깨어 있으면서 삶 속에 적용하기 위해서 해야 할 일이 있습니다. 35,36절을 보십시오.

“[막]13:35 그러므로 깨어 있으라 집 주인이 언제 올는지 혹 저물 때일는지, 밤중일는지, 닭 울 때일는지, 새벽일는지 너희가 알지 못함이라

[막]13:36 그가 홀연히 와서 너희가 자는 것을 보지 않도록 하라”

주님은 깨어 있어서 집 주인이 언제 오게 될지 저물 때일지 밤중일지 닭 우는 새벽일지 알지 못하리라는 것을 상기시켰습니다. 핵심은 주님이 왔을 때 우리가 자는 것을 보지 않게 하라는 것이었습니다. 여기서 잔다는 것은 표면적으로 잠을 자는 것을 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 애초에 깨어 있다는 것을 설명하시기 위해서 집주인이 종들에게 사무를 맡겨놓고 자리를 비웠다는 예화를 설명해 주신 것이기 때문에 잠을 잔다는 것도 하나의 비유적 표현이었습니다.

실제로 주님이 말씀하신 것은 ‘너희가 너희 욕심을 따라 사는 것을 보이지 않도록 하라’고 하신 것입니다. 그 당시 대제사장은 자기 욕심을 따라 살았습니다. 바리새인들도 서기관들도 이스라엘 백성들도 다 자기 원하는 대로 살았습니다. 그래서 그들은 하나같이 하나님의 원하는 것을 전부 어겼습니다. 그들이 지켰다고 생각하는 하나님의 원하는 것이란 사실 자신들이 원하는 것들 뿐이었습니다. 그래서 이 둘이 충돌할 때 자신들의 원하는 것이 하나님의 원하는 것을 압도해 버린 것입니다.

그들은 아마 예수님을 죽이면서도 그것이 하나님께서 원하시는 것이라고 생각했을 것입니다. 그것은 그만큼 자신들이 원하는 것이 강렬했고 죄의 본성이 강했다는 것을 의미합니다. 그런 자들이 바로 깊이 잠드는 자들이었습니다. 그런 모습을 하나님께서 오셔서 보셨을 때 그들이 받을 것은 자신들이 저지른 죄에 대한 심판 밖에는 없었습니다.

우리도 그렇게 되지 않기 위해서 생각해야 합니다. 자신의 판단을 하나님의 뜻이라고 오해할 때가 있습니다. 그걸 확인하기 위해서는 시간이 흐른 다음에 결과가 어땠는지를 보면 됩니다. 근본적으로는 우리가 원래 하는 일이 하나님의 원하시는 일이라고 생각하는 것이 아니라 애초부터 하나님의 원하시는 일을 하려고 해야 합니다. 그럴 때 진정한 깨어 있는 신앙 생활을 할 수 있습니다.

보이스피싱에 당하지 않는 것도 그런 것입니다. 단순히 전화를 끊고 혹은 모르는 전화를 아예 받지 않는다고 해서 그런 속임수에 넘어가지 않는 것이 아닙니다. 아예 처음부터 자신만의 생각과 확신으로 행동하지 않도록 조언과 도움을 받아야만 하는 것이 필요합니다. 우리도 내 생각으로 결정하지 않고 하나님의 뜻을 구하고 생각하는 것이 중요합니다. 그럴 때 하나님이 기뻐하시는 일을 결정할 수 있습니다.

예를 들어, 잠들어 있는 사람들을 깨우는 방식도 생각해 보십시오. 제자들이 계속 잠에 빠졌을 때 예수님은 제자들을 깨우셨지 제자들을 때린 것이 아닙니다. 폭력적이고 강압적으로 깨어 있게 한 것이 아닙니다. 그 이유는 예수님 자신이 깨어 있기 때문이었습니다. 우리도 깨어 있기 위해서 하나님이 그럴 때 원하시는 것이 무엇인가를 생각해야 합니다. 때로는 견디는 것도 필요하고 때로는 아무 말 안 하는 것도 필요하고 때로는 같이 있어주는 것도 필요합니다. 무조건 내 방식대로 하려고 한다면 그것은 깨우는 것이 아니라 같이 잠드는 것일 뿐입니다. 37절을 보십시오.

“[막]13:37 깨어 있으라 내가 너희에게 하는 이 말은 모든 사람에게 하는 말이니라 하시니라”

주님은 깨어 있는 사람이나 깨어 있지 않은 사람에게 이 말씀을 주셨습니다. 이러한 온유한 말씀 속에서 다시 한번 모든 사람에 대한 주님의 사랑을 깨닫습니다. 깨어 있어야 하는 사람들이나 또는 지금 깨어 있는 사람들까지도 포함하여 진정으로 주님 앞에 서게 될 것을 준비하라는 말씀 속에서 우리는 더욱 주님 앞에서 겸손하고 낮은 자세로 주님을 따를 것을 생각합니다. 그럴 때 주님이 나타나시며 칭찬해 주시며 주님의 것을 주님의 뜻에 따라 관리하고 지킨 것에 대해서 칭찬해 주실 것입니다.

이러한 말씀의 은혜가 우리 모두의 삶과 신앙과 마음 속에 넘치시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Mark] 13:33 Watch out, for you do not know when the time will come.

[Mark] 13:34 Just as when a man leaves his home to go to a foreign country, he gives authority to his servants, assigning each one his own affairs, and commands the doorkeeper to keep watch.

[Mark] 13:35 Therefore keep watch, for you do not know when the master of the house will come—whether in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or at dawn.

[Mark] 13:36 Do not let him come suddenly and find you sleeping.

[Mark] 13:37 Keep watch. This word which I speak to you is for everyone.

This world is a world where many temptations and deceptions exist. Therefore, we now live in a world where, if we do not stay alert, we can be easily deceived. The government has established numerous public awareness campaigns and safeguards to prevent people from falling for such tricks and lies. However, no matter how much policy is intended to help, if individuals do not remain vigilant, they will inevitably disable all such safeguards themselves and fall victim to fraud. This is because they are made to believe that it is fraud without realizing it. We must recognize this danger and stay alert.

This is precisely what Jesus is saying in the passage from Mark 13 that we are looking at today. The words "Watch out" and "Be watchful" are not spoken without reason. They contain Jesus' earnest desire and determination to ensure that we stay alert and think carefully so that we are not deceived. Therefore, as we read these words, we must reflect that we must faithfully follow Jesus' will. When we do so, we ourselves become safe, and those around us become safe. Look at verse 33.

“[Mark] 13:33 Be careful and keep watch, for you do not know when that time will come.

[Mark] 13:34 Just as when a man leaves his home for a foreign country, he gives authority to his servants, assigning each one his own affairs, and commands the doorkeeper to keep watch.”

Jesus told us to be careful and keep watch in matters of faith. He said that we do not know when that time will come. That time refers to the time of judgment and the time of the end times. Everything Jesus spoke of in Chapter 13 was about that time of judgment. However, preparing for that time of judgment was not something to be done only by timing it perfectly at that specific moment. It had to be done well in normal times. Since it is impossible to time it perfectly, constant preparation was important. It was just like when a master leaves his home for a foreign country and leaves his post, he assigns affairs to his servants and commands the doorkeeper to keep watch and guard the place well. They had to continue doing well even when the master was absent.

This instruction to keep watch is the same as when He told His disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane in Mark 14 to stay awake and pray so that they would not fall into temptation. If you do not stay alert, you will be tempted before you know it. Before you know it, you are doing what you want rather than what God wants. You may even mistakenly believe that what you want is what God wants. Entrusting tasks to servants so they can perform well even when the master is away, or telling a doorkeeper to stay awake and guard the gate, are all actions that fulfill the master's wishes. However, when the master is absent, you can easily change these things to suit your own desires.

What Jesus was saying was not simply that one should not sleep. It was a warning to guard against consciously becoming selfish, subjective, and negligent in God's work. At the beginning of Mark chapter 13, Jesus spoke of the temple building being destroyed.

“[Mark] 13:1 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Teacher, look at these stones and these buildings!’

[Mark] 13:2 Jesus said to him, ‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another; every one will be thrown down.’”

The temple was the house of God, but the people of Israel turned it into their own temple. Therefore, when Jesus, the Son of God and the very essence of the temple, came, they killed Him. This is akin to the temple being destroyed. Historically, the Jerusalem Temple was also completely destroyed by the Roman General Titus in AD 70. When they were blinded by their own greed, they killed the Son of God and lost their own temple entirely.

This message is important for us today as well. The world tells us to be vigilant and watch out for voice phishing, but we must be wary of unbelief. We must also be wary of secularization. We must guard against the desire to follow our own will rather than God's will. This is because it constitutes another crime. It is not accepted as a choice, but becomes a new sin in itself.

Consider the nature of human sin. Since Adam, all humans have become sinners, and the essence of this is acting according to what is right in their own eyes. Even Adam had God's commandment not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but because he wanted to do what he desired more, he disobeyed God's command not to do so and ate the fruit he wanted. That is how he came to commit sin. Even now, humans become sinners by doing what God has forbidden simply because they desire to do it. Although Jesus has forgiven those sins, we become sinners by rejecting God’s will to believe in that forgiveness, choosing instead not to believe according to our own desires. Ultimately, by rejecting forgiveness, we face judgment.

When we realize this, we understand that we are preparing for God’s timing by making the temple God’s temple, not our own. Just as servants receive authority to perform their duties and doorkeepers receive their duty to guard the gate, we are essentially not making the master’s house our own; only when we make the master’s house the master’s house can we truly become those who have no shame before the master.

Now, there is work we must do to remain awake and apply this to our lives. Please look at verses 35 and 36. “[Mark] 13:35 Therefore keep watch, for you do not know when the master of the house will come—whether in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of a rooster, or at dawn.

[Mark] 13:36 So that when he comes suddenly, he will not find you sleeping.”

The Lord reminded us to keep watch because we would not know when the master of the house would come—whether at evening, at midnight, or at dawn when a rooster crows. The key point was that when the Lord came, He would not see us sleeping. Here, "sleeping" does not mean literally sleeping. Since He used the parable of the master leaving his post and entrusting his duties to his servants to explain the importance of being awake, sleeping was also a metaphorical expression.

In reality, what the Lord was saying was, "Do not let it be seen that you are living according to your own desires." At that time, the high priest lived according to his own desires. The Pharisees, the scribes, and the people of Israel all lived as they pleased. Consequently, they all violated everything that God desired. What they thought they were keeping—what God wanted—was in fact nothing but what they themselves wanted. Therefore, when these two clashed, what they wanted overwhelmed what God wanted.

Even as they killed Jesus, they likely believed that it was what God wanted. This implies that their desires were intense and their sinful nature was strong. Such were the very people who fell into a deep sleep. When God came and saw them in that state, the only thing they would receive was judgment for the sins they had committed.

We must reflect on this so that we do not become like that. There are times when we mistake our own judgment for God's will. To verify this, we simply need to look at the results after some time has passed. Fundamentally, we should not assume that what we do is what God wants, but rather strive to do what God wants from the very beginning. Only then can we lead a truly awakened life of faith.

Not falling victim to voice phishing is also like this. Simply hanging up the phone or not answering unknown calls at all does not mean you will not fall for such tricks. It is necessary to seek advice and help so that you do not act based solely on your own thoughts and convictions from the start. It is important for us, too, not to make decisions based on our own thoughts, but to seek and consider God's will. In such times, we can decide what pleases God.

For example, consider the way to wake people who are asleep. When the disciples kept falling asleep, Jesus woke them up; He did not beat them. He did not force them to stay awake through violence or coercion. The reason was that Jesus Himself was awake. To stay awake, we too must consider what God desires in such moments. Sometimes, enduring is necessary; sometimes, remaining silent is necessary; and sometimes, simply being present is necessary. If we try to do things our own way unconditionally, that is not waking them up, but merely falling asleep together.

Look at verse 37.

“[Mark] 13:37 ‘Keep awake. And I say this to you to everyone.’”

In the Lord’s gentle words, we realize His love for all people once again. In His command to truly stay awake—not just to a select few, but even to those who consider themselves awake—we reflect on following the Lord with even greater humility and a lowly attitude. At such times, the Lord will appear and commend you for managing and keeping His things according to His will.

May the grace of these words abound in all of us. I pray in the name of the Lord.
