에베소서에서는 구원의 본질이 무엇인지를 보여주었고 그로 인해서 구원받은 성도의 삶이 어떠해야 하는지를 설명하였습니다. 그것은 성도로서의 모습이 자신이 선택한 구원에 근거해서 자신이 원하는 삶을 살아가는 것이 아니었다는 것을 보여줍니다. 진정한 성도의 모습은 하나님의 부르심을 따라 얻은 구원과 하나님의 뜻을 따라 살아가는 생활이었고 그것이 바로 참된 구원받은 자의 모습이었습니다. 그 이유는 분명합니다. 예정과 섭리에 따라서 얻은 구원이기 때문에 구원 이후의 생활을 통해서 하나님의 뜻과 계획을 이루게 되는 것입니다.
이러한 은혜를 잘 깨달으면 우리는 어떻게 살아야 하는지를 알게 됩니다. 그럴 때 에베소서는 그러한 삶을 통해서 그리스도를 닮은 자들이 된다는 것을 말합니다. 그것이 진정한 하나님의 뜻에 따르는 삶의 열매가 됩니다. 하나님께서는 인간이 그리스도를 닮은 하나님의 자녀가 되기를 원하셨던 것입니다. 이와 같은 하나님의 은혜와 축복을 잘 받아들인다면 우리는 하나님의 뜻대로 그리스도를 닮은 하나님의 자녀가 되고 그로 인해서 하나님께서 주시는 축복을 온전히 누릴 수 있습니다.
에베소서 4장 15절의 말씀은 그러한 새로운 삶의 시작을 보여줍니다.
“[엡]4:15 오직 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하여 범사에 그에게까지 자랄지라 그는 머리니 곧 그리스도라”
생활의 면에서 그리스도인에게 하나님께서 원하시는 것은 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하여 범사에 그에게까지 자라는 것입니다. 이것은 신앙만을 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 생활 속에서 그리스도의 모습까지 자라는 것입니다. 이론적으로 신앙만 커지는 것이 그리스도인이 아닙니다. 생활 속에서 그리스도의 모습을 닮아가는 것이 바로 그리스도인입니다. 그럴 때 그리스도의 머리 되심을 온전히 따라가게 됩니다.
만약 예수님의 제자들이 예수님을 열심히 따라다니면서 생활은 엉망으로 했다고 해보십시오. 예수님의 제자들은 예수님의 이름과 영광을 부끄럽게 하는 자들이 되었을 것입니다. 그렇지 않았기 때문에 제자들은 예수님과 함께 사람들을 먹이는 자가 되었고 사람들을 고치는 자가 되었으며 사람들을 가르치고 섬기는 자가 되었습니다. 그럴 때 그들이 예수님의 제자라는 것이 자랑스럽고 영광스러웠습니다.
지금도 마찬가지입니다. 예수님을 믿는 자들이 예수님의 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하여 예수님께서 세상을 구원하신 것처럼 누군가를 구원하려고 할 때 그의 삶은 예수님을 잘 나타내 보이는 삶이 됩니다. 그렇게 되기를 하나님은 원하시는 것입니다. 왜 예수님이 베드로가 칼을 꺼내 들고 대제사장의 종들에게서 예수님을 지키려고 했을 때 그 칼을 거두라고 하셨는가를 생각해 보십시오. 그 이유는 바로 하나님의 뜻을 따르려고 했기 때문입니다. 만약 대제사장의 종들에게 예수님이 잡히는 것이 하나님의 뜻이 아니었다면 하나님의 방법으로 예수님을 구원하셨을 것입니다. 그러나 그것이 하나님의 뜻이었기 때문에 예수님은 잡히셨고 십자가에 달리셨습니다. 그렇지만 그로 인해서 하나님의 뜻이 이루어졌습니다.
우리가 살아가는 삶에도 비슷한 일이 일어납니다. 우리가 원하지 않는 억울한 일들과 피하고 싶은 많은 불합리한 일들이 있을 때 그것을 감당해야 하는지 아니면 피해야 하는지를 고민한다면 그럴 때 예수님 안에서 자라나야 합니다. 무조건 감당하는 것도 아니고 무조건 피하는 것도 아닙니다. 그것이 정말 하나님의 뜻인가를 잘 생각해 보아야 하는 것입니다. 그럴 때 변화가 생깁니다. 16절을 보십시오.
“[엡]4:16 그에게서 온 몸이 각 마디를 통하여 도움을 받음으로 연결되고 결합되어 각 지체의 분량대로 역사하여 그 몸을 자라게 하며 사랑 안에서 스스로 세우느니라”
그에게서 온 몸이 각 마디를 통하여 도움을 받음으로 연결됩니다. 흩어지는 것이 아니라 모이게 되고 그럴 때 하나님이 사용하시는 부분들이 있습니다. 각 지체의 분량대로 역사하여 그 몸을 자라게 합니다. 그래서 그리스도의 사랑 안에서 스스로 세우게 됩니다. 만약 그냥 도망갔다면 아무런 성장이나 발전이 없었을 것입니다. 또한 아무 생각 없이 버티기만 했다면 그 자체로 무기력 해졌을 것입니다. 그리스도의 사랑 안에서 도움을 받고 연결되고 결합되었을 때 역사가 일어났고 자라게 되었으며 세우게 되었습니다. 이것이 그리스도 안에서 우리가 해야 하는 생활의 모습입니다.
그래서 자녀가 부모와 함께 어려움을 극복하는 것이고 부모가 자녀로 인해서 지혜롭게 되는 것이며 성도가 교회를 통해 규모 있게 살게 되고 교회가 성도의 헌신으로 세워져 나갑니다. 정해진 대답이 있는 것이 아니라 하나님의 뜻을 사모하면서 각자가 맡은 역할을 해 나갈 때 합력하여 이루시는 하나님의 인도하심과 축복주심을 받게 되는 것입니다.
사도행전에서도 그런 성장의 일들이 있었습니다. 성도들이 자신의 재산과 소유를 팔아 교회에 헌금하기도 하고 교회가 헌금을 모아서 다른 교회를 돕기도 했습니다. 각자의 직업 속에서 하나님의 복음을 전했으며 박해를 피했을 때 더 큰 선교의 현장으로 나갈 수도 있었습니다.
이처럼 하나님께서는 예수님 안에서 성도들이 자라게 하시니 무조건 자신의 결정을 이루려고 할 것이 아니라 예수님 안에서 자라나게 되는 것이 무엇인지를 사모하면서 하나님의 뜻을 따르려고 해야 합니다. 그러면 하나님의 충만하심으로 충만하게 됩니다. 이와 정반대의 모습이 있는데 그것은 이방인들의 모습이었습니다.
“[엡]4:17 그러므로 내가 이것을 말하며 주 안에서 증언하노니 이제부터 너희는 이방인이 그 마음의 허망한 것으로 행함 같이 행하지 말라
[엡]4:18 그들의 총명이 어두워지고 그들 가운데 있는 무지함과 그들의 마음이 굳어짐으로 말미암아 하나님의 생명에서 떠나 있도다”
이방인들은 마음의 허망함으로 행합니다. 그들의 총명은 어두워지고 그 무지함과 굳은 마음으로 인해 하나님의 생명에서 떠나 있습니다. 글서 그들은 사망과 심판으로 나아가고 있는 것입니다. 성도들은 그런 모습을 본받지 말고 하나님의 뜻에 따라 그리스도 안에서 살아있는 자들이 되어야 하겠습니다. 그럴 때 하나님의 생명 속에서 충만해질 것입니다.
오늘도 우리의 기도를 통해 그렇게 그리스도 안에서 자라나게 해달라고 기도하며 하나님의 생명으로 충만하게 해달라고 간구합시다. 그래서 하나님의 도우심으로 풍성해지는 우리의 생활이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Overview: Faith and life must develop in Christ, #74 Godliness,
[Eph] 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow in every way into him who is the head, that is, Christ.
[Eph] 4:16 From him the whole body, joined and connected by every joint, receives nourishment and grows, working according to the measure of each part, building itself up in love.
[Eph] 4:17 Therefore I speak these things and testify in the Lord: From now on, do not walk as the Gentiles do, walking in the futility of their minds.
[Eph] 4:18 Their understanding is darkened, and they are alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them and the hardness of their hearts.
Ephesians showed what the essence of salvation is, and through it, how the life of a saved saint should be. It explained how to do this. This shows that the image of a saint was not about living a life one desired based on the salvation one chose. The true image of a saint was salvation obtained through God's calling and a life lived in accordance with God's will; that was the very image of a truly saved person. The reason is clear. Because salvation is obtained according to predestination and providence, one fulfills God's will and plan through one's life after salvation.
When we fully realize this grace, we come to know how we should live. At that point, Ephesians states that through such a life, we become like Christ. That becomes the fruit of a life that truly follows God's will. God desired that humans become His children who resemble Christ. If we fully accept such grace and blessings from God, we become God's children who resemble Christ according to His will, and through this, we can fully enjoy the blessings God gives.
The words of Ephesians 4:15 show the beginning of such a new life. “[Eph] 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow in every way into Him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
In terms of daily life, what God desires from Christians is to speak the truth in love and grow in every way into Him. This does not mean faith alone. It means growing into the likeness of Christ in our daily lives. A Christian is not someone whose faith grows only theoretically. A Christian is someone who resembles Christ in their daily lives. Only then will they fully follow Christ as the head.
Imagine if Jesus’ disciples had diligently followed Him while living their lives in a mess. They would have become those who brought shame to Jesus’ name and glory. Because they did not, the disciples became those who fed people, healed people, taught people, and served people alongside Jesus. At that time, it was a source of pride and glory to be His disciples.
The same is true today. When those who believe in Jesus speak the truth in His love and seek to save others just as Jesus saved the world, their lives become lives that clearly reflect Jesus. This is what God desires. Consider why Jesus told Peter to put away his sword when Peter drew it to protect Him from the chief priest's servants. The reason was precisely that He was trying to follow God's will. If it had not been God's will for Jesus to be arrested by the chief priest's servants, He would have saved Him in His own way. However, because it was God's will, Jesus was arrested and crucified. Nevertheless, through that, God's will was fulfilled.
Similar things happen in our lives. When we face unjust situations we do not want and many unreasonable things we wish to avoid, and we agonize over whether to endure them or avoid them, it is then that we must grow in Jesus. It is not about unconditionally enduring them, nor is it about unconditionally avoiding them. We must carefully consider whether it is truly God's will. That is when change occurs. Look at verse 16.
** “[Eph] 4:16 From Him the whole body, joined and connected by every joint, receives nourishment and grows, working according to the measure of each part, building itself up in love.”
The whole body is connected by receiving nourishment through every joint. It is not scattered but gathered, and when this happens, there are parts that God uses. It works according to the measure of each part to make the body grow. Thus, it builds itself up in the love of Christ. If one had simply run away, there would have been no growth or development. Furthermore, if one had merely endured without thinking, one would have become lethargic in itself. When one received help, was connected, and joined within the love of Christ, work took place, growth occurred, and building took place. This is the way of life we must live in Christ.
Therefore, children overcome difficulties together with their parents, parents become wise through their children, believers live with order through the church, and the church is built up through the dedication of its members. There is no fixed answer; rather, when each person fulfills their assigned role while longing for God’s will, they receive God’s guidance and blessing, which accomplishes things together.
There were such instances of growth in the Book of Acts as well. Believers sold their possessions and donated the proceeds to the church, and the church collected offerings to help other churches. They preached the gospel of God within their respective professions, and when they escaped persecution, they were able to move on to larger mission fields.
Just as God causes believers to grow in Jesus, we should not blindly try to fulfill our own decisions, but rather seek to follow God's will while yearning for what it means to grow in Jesus. Then, we will be filled with the fullness of God. There is a stark contrast to this, which was the behavior of the Gentiles.
“[Eph] 4:17 Therefore I speak and testify in the Lord that from now on you do not walk as the Gentiles do, walking in the futility of their minds.
[Eph] 4:18 Their understanding is darkened, and they are alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them and the hardness of their hearts.”
The Gentiles act with the futility of their hearts. Their understanding is darkened, and due to their ignorance and hardened hearts, they are alienated from the life of God. Therefore, they are heading toward death and judgment. Saints should not imitate such behavior, but rather become those who live in Christ according to God's will. When we do so, we will be filled with God's life.
Let us pray today, through our prayers, that we may grow in Christ in this way and earnestly ask to be filled with God's life. Therefore, I bless you in the name of the Lord that your lives may become abundant through God's help.
