[막]14:4 어떤 사람들이 화를 내어 서로 말하되 어찌하여 이 향유를 허비하는가

[막]14:5 이 향유를 삼백 데나리온 이상에 팔아 가난한 자들에게 줄 수 있었겠도다 하며 그 여자를 책망하는지라

설 명절을 보내고 2월 마지막 주가 되었습니다. 이번 한 주가 지나면 3월이 되고 3월의 일들이 시작될 것입니다. 시간은 항상 앞에서 보면 오래 걸리지만 다가오면 금방이고 지나가면 언제 그랬냐는 듯이 멀어집니다. 마치 플랫폼에서 혹은 건널목에서 기차나 버스가 빨리 달려와서 지나가는 것 같습니다. 2월은 특히나 더 그런 느낌을 많이 받게 됩니다. 우리의 빠른 일상생활 속에서 한 순간 한 순간 주님께로 나아가야 하겠습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 그 기차를 타고 혹은 버스를 타고 다음 정거장으로 나아가게 될 것입니다. 주님께로 나아가게 된다면 우리의 방향이 바뀝니다. 지금도 우리는 그러한 변화를 사모하고 있습니다.

지난 주에는 예수님의 시신을 받아서 장례를 치뤘던 아리마대 요셉에 대해서 살펴보았습니다. 장례 그 자체는 막상 닥치면 미처 생각하지 못하는 일들이 많이 있습니다. 하지만 정신을 바짝 차리고 자신이 해야 할 일에 집중한다면 감당하지 못할 일은 없습니다. 그래서 아리마대 요셉은 예수님의 시신에 대해서 귀한 장례를 마칠 수 있었습니다. 또한 그것은 영광스러운 부활을 준비하는 시간이었습니다.

그가 정성스럽게 완료했던 세마포로 쌓여 시신이 놓여진 굴 무덤과 돌로 막은 입구는 삼일 후 돌이 움직여지고 예수님이 걸어 나오시며 무덤은 비는 부활의 영광으로 그대로 나타났습니다. 싸고 뉘이고 가로막은 모습은 그대로 열리고 일어나고 벗어져서 개어져 있는 예수님의 부활의 증거가 된 것입니다.   

이러한 예수님의 장례를 준비한 또 다른 사람이 있었는데 그는 마가복음 14장에 나오는 한 여인이었습니다. 이 여인은 매우 값진 향유인 나드 한 옥합을 가져와서 그 옥합을 깨트려서 예수님의 머리에 부었습니다. 조금 붓고 나머지를 놔둔 것이 아니라 한 옥합 전체를 예수님의 머리에 부었던 것입니다.

시기적으로 그 이전에 예수님께 향유를 부은 두 명의 여자가 있었습니다. 첫 번째는 누가복음 7장에 나오는 여자입니다.

“[눅]7:36    한 바리새인이 예수께 자기와 함께 잡수시기를 청하니 이에 바리새인의 집에 들어가 앉으셨을 때에

[눅]7:37     그 동네에 죄를 지은 한 여자가 있어 예수께서 바리새인의 집에 앉아 계심을 알고 향유 담은 옥합을 가지고 와서

[눅]7:38     예수의 뒤로 그 발 곁에 서서 울며 눈물로 그 발을 적시고 자기 머리털로 닦고 그 발에 입맞추고 향유를 부으니”

이 때는 항유 옥합을 발 곁에 서서 울며 눈물로 예수님의 발을 적시고 자기 머리털로 닦고 발에 입맞추고 향유를 부었습니다. 그때의 의미는 죄사함에 대한 감사와 영광의 의미였습니다. 또한 요한복음 12장에서 다른 여인이 향유 옥합을 부었습니다.

“[요]12:1  유월절 엿새 전에 예수께서 베다니에 이르시니 이 곳은 예수께서 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 나사로가 있는 곳이라

[요]12:2   거기서 예수를 위하여 잔치할새 마르다는 일을 하고 나사로는 예수와 함께 앉은 자 중에 있더라

[요]12:3   마리아는 지극히 비싼 향유 곧 순전한 나드 한 근을 가져다가 예수의 발에 붓고 자기 머리털로 그의 발을 닦으니 향유 냄새가 집에 가득하더라”

그때부터 예수님은 그 향유는 예수님의 장례를 위한 것이라고 하셨습니다. 그 다음에 마가복음 14장에 나오는 유월절 이틀 전에 있었던 오늘 본문에 나오는 여인이 향유 옥합을 예수님께 부었습니다.

“[막]14:3 예수께서 베다니 나병환자 시몬의 집에서 식사하실 때에 한 여자가 매우 값진 향유 곧 순전한 나드 한 옥합을 가지고 와서 그 옥합을 깨뜨려 예수의 머리에 부으니”

이 내용은 마태복음 26장에도 그대로 동일하게 나옵니다. 그래서 향유 옥합을 붓는 것은 사복음서 전부에서 나타나고 그 중 마태, 마가복음의 내용이 일치하기 때문에 전체 3명의 여인이 예수님께 향유 옥합을 부었던 것입니다.

예수님은 마가복음 14장에서 이 여인이 향유 옥합을 예수님의 머리에 부으신 것은 예수님의 장례를 예비한 것이라고 하셨습니다. 8절을 보십시오.

“[막]14:8 그는 힘을 다하여 내 몸에 향유를 부어 내 장례를 미리 준비하였느니라

[막]14:9 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 온 천하에 어디서든지 복음이 전파되는 곳에는 이 여자가 행한 일도 말하여 그를 기억하리라 하시니라”

예수님께서 이루시는 대속의 일이 바로 십자가에 달려 죽으시는 일이었는데 그 죽으심과 그 다음에 장례가 치뤄지는 일을 이 여인이 미리 준비하셨다고 하신 것입니다. 그 여인은 자신의 온 힘을 다하여 예수님의 몸에 향유를 부었는데 그가 예수님이 죽으시고 무덤에 뉘여질 것을 알고 그 일을 한 것은 아니었습니다. 그 여인은 힘을 다해 예수님의 몸에 향유를 부었는데 알고 보니 그것이 예수님의 장례를 미리 준비한 것이 되었다는 의미입니다.

아주 귀하고 값비싼 나드 향유 한 옥합을 전부 예수님의 머리에 부은 것이 어떻게 장례를 준비하는 것이 될 수 있을까를 생각해 보십시오. 그것은 숨겨진 가치에 그 의미가 있습니다. 겉으로 보기에는 죽음이고 사망이고 초라함이고 헐벗음이고 비참함이고 무기력함이지만 그 장례는 그렇게 되어지도록 준비된 것이었습니다. 예수님이 그렇게 장례 치뤄질 때 비로소 예수님의 피를 힘입는 자들이 죄사함을 얻는 것이고 그로 인해서 다시 살아날 수 있는 것이었습니다.

뿐만 아닙니다. 예수님은 그렇게 십자가 달려 죽으시고 무덤에 뉘여지시지만 사망에 매여 계시는 분이 아니라 다시 살아나셔서 생명으로 나타나시고 영광으로 나타나시는 분이셨습니다. 그러한 예수님의 장례를 준비하는 것은 바로 이 세상에서 우리가 발견한 숨겨진 가치, 감추어진 진리, 보이지 않는 영광을 깨닫는 놀라운 신앙고백이 되는 것입니다.

예수님의 장례를 막는 것이 아니라 예수님의 장례를 따라 가려고 할 때 진정으로 예수님의 부활에 따라가게 되며 예수님의 영광에 동참하게 됩니다. 베드로처럼 예수님의 죽음을 막고자 하였다면 오히려 예수님을 버리게 되었겠지만 그 죽으심을 받아들이고 순종하고 그 이후를 잘 감당하려고 한다면 그러한 예수님께 할 수 있는 일은 오직 그분의 머리에 가장 귀한 향유 옥합을 붓는 것이었습니다.

이제 우리가 삶 속에서 해야 하는 일이 바로 이러한 일입니다. 예수님은 이 여인의 일을 온 천하 어디서든지 복음이 전파되는 모든 곳에서는 이 여자가 행한 일도 말하여 그를 기억하리라고 하셨습니다. 복음이 전파되는 곳은 예수님의 죽으심이 전파되는 곳입니다. 그 죽으심과 장례 치뤄지는 일이 귀한 이유는 그로 인해서 바로 우리가 살아났고 그로 인해서 하나님의 사랑과 영광이 나타났기 때문입니다. 그래서 이것보다 더 귀한 것이 없고 이것보다 더 영광스러운 것이 없습니다. 예수님은 자신의 모든 것을 다 바치셨고 하나님은 그 모든 것을 받으셨던 것입니다.

우리가 그 여인을 기억할 때 할 수 있는 일은 우리도 예수님께 대해서 그러한 숨겨진 가치를 깨닫고 따라가는 것입니다. 겉으로 드러난 영광만을 따른다면 예수님의 장례의 의미를 알지 못할 것입니다. 장례를 예비한다는 말이 무슨 말인지 이해하지 못할 것입니다. 하지만 숨겨진 가치를 이해한다면 장례를 예비할 때 우리는 예수님이 가신 길을 따라가게 될 것입니다. 그러한 예수님의 영광스러운 희생의 삶과 대속의 삶을 사모하면서 살게 될 것입니다. 그리고 그것은 그 어떤 것과 비교할 수 없을 것입니다.

이와 반대로 어리석은 사람들은 예수님의 장례를 준비하는 삶을 거부했습니다. 4절부터 보십시오.

“[막]14:4 어떤 사람들이 화를 내어 서로 말하되 어찌하여 이 향유를 허비하는가

[막]14:5 이 향유를 삼백 데나리온 이상에 팔아 가난한 자들에게 줄 수 있었겠도다 하며 그 여자를 책망하는지라

[막]14:6 예수께서 이르시되 가만 두라 너희가 어찌하여 그를 괴롭게 하느냐 그가 내게 좋은 일을 하였느니라”

그들은 노동자의 300일 품삯에 해당하는 삼백 데나리온의 가치나 가난한 자들에게 주는 모습을 생각했지만 예수님은 그 여인이 예수님께 좋은 일을 하였다고 칭찬해 주셨습니다. 그 숨겨진 가치를 깨달으면서 그 여인은 예수님을 귀하게 여기는 사람이 되었고 또한 예수님께 좋은 기억이 되는 사람이 되었기 때문입니다. 우리도 이 세상의 시간 속에서 그런 사람이 되어야 하겠습니다.

예수님의 가장 고귀한 일이 장례 치루어지심으로 완성되었습니다. 그 일을 준비했던 자가 가장 지혜로웠습니다. 우리도 이 시간을 살면서 더욱 그렇게 예수님의 가치를 추구하고 그걸 준비하며 그 일에 최선을 다하는 지혜로운 성도가 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Mark 14:3] While Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume—pure nard. She broke the jar and poured it on his head.

[Mark 14:4] But some of the people were angry and said to one another, “Why is this perfume wasted?”

[Mark 14:5] This perfume could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor. And they rebuked her.

[Mark 14:6] But Jesus said to them, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good thing to me.”

[Mark 14:7] For you always have the poor with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have me.

[Mark 14:8] She did everything she could to anoint my body in preparation for my burial.

[Mark 14:9] Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.

The Lunar New Year holiday has passed, and it is now the last week of February. This week will usher in March, and the events of March will begin. Time always seems to take a long time when viewed from the front, but it approaches quickly, and then fades away as if it had never happened. It's like a train or bus speeding past on a platform or at a railroad crossing. February feels this way especially often. In the midst of our fast-paced daily lives, we must turn to the Lord, moment by moment. Then, we will board that train or bus and head to the next stop. If we turn to the Lord, our direction will change. Even now, we long for that change.

Last week, we looked at Joseph of Arimathea, who received Jesus' body and conducted the burial. The funeral itself presents many challenges that we might not even think about when it's actually happening. However, if we stay focused and focus on what we need to do, nothing is impossible. That's why Joseph of Arimathea was able to complete the precious burial of Jesus' body. It was also a time of preparation for the glorious resurrection.

The tomb he had meticulously completed, wrapped in linen and sealed with a stone, where the body lay. Three days later, the stone was rolled away, Jesus walked out, and the tomb was revealed in its empty glory, a symbol of the resurrection. The very act of wrapping, laying, and blocking the body—opening, rising, and uncovering—served as evidence of Jesus' resurrection.

Another person who prepared for Jesus' burial was the woman mentioned in Mark 14. She brought an alabaster jar of nard, a very expensive perfume, and poured it on Jesus' head. She didn't just pour a little and leave the rest, but poured the entire alabaster vial on Jesus' head.

Two women had anointed Jesus with perfume before this time. The first is the woman in Luke 7.

“[Luke 7:36] A Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him. He went into the Pharisee's house and sat down at table.

[Luke 7:37] But a woman in that town who had been a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster vial of perfume.

[Luke 7:38] And standing behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair. Then she kissed his feet and anointed them with the perfume.”

At this time, she stood at his feet with an alabaster vial of perfume, weeping, and wetting his feet with her tears, wiping them with her hair, kissing them, and anointing them with perfume. The meaning of this moment was gratitude and glory for the forgiveness of sins. Also, in John 12, another woman poured an alabaster vial of perfume.

“[John 12:1] Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he had raised from the dead.

[John 12:2] There a banquet was given in his honor. Martha served, but Lazarus was among those reclining at table with him.

[John 12:3] Then Mary took about a pound of perfume made of pure nard, an expensive perfume, and poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.”

From then on, Jesus said that the perfume was for his burial. Then, in today’s passage from Mark 14, which took place two days before the Passover, the woman poured an alabaster flask of perfume on Jesus.

“[Mark 14:3] While he was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of perfume made of pure nard, very expensive. She broke the flask and poured it on his head.”

This same story is also found in Matthew 26. Therefore, since the alabaster jar of perfume appears in all four Gospels, and the accounts in Matthew and Mark are consistent, it follows that three women anointed Jesus with perfume.

In Mark 14, Jesus said that this woman's anointing of Jesus' head with an alabaster jar of perfume was in preparation for his burial. Look at verse 8:

“[Mark 14:8] She did all she could to anoint my body in preparation for my burial.

[Mark 14:9] Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Jesus's atoning work was His death on the cross, and this woman prepared for His death and subsequent burial. The woman poured all her strength into anointing Jesus' body, but she did not do it knowing that Jesus would die and be laid in the tomb. The woman poured perfume on Jesus' body with all her might, but it turns out she was preparing for his burial.

Consider how pouring an entire alabaster jar of precious and expensive perfume on Jesus' head could be considered preparation for his burial. Its meaning lies in its hidden value. On the surface, it appears to be death, desolation, nakedness, misery, and helplessness, but the funeral was prepared for that very purpose. Only when Jesus' burial was held in this way could those who believed in his blood receive forgiveness of sins and, through it, be resurrected.

Moreover, Jesus, though crucified and laid in the tomb, was not bound by death. He was resurrected, revealed to life and glory. Preparing for Jesus' funeral is a remarkable confession of faith, awakening us to the hidden value, hidden truth, and unseen glory we have discovered in this world.

When we seek to follow Jesus' funeral, rather than prevent it, we truly follow His resurrection and share in His glory. Had we, like Peter, tried to prevent Jesus' death, we would have abandoned Him. However, if we accepted His death, obeyed Him, and sought to endure the aftermath, the only thing we could do for Him was to pour an alabaster jar of precious perfume on His head.

This is precisely what we must do in our lives. Jesus said that wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her. Where the gospel is preached, Jesus' death is proclaimed. The reason His death and burial are so precious is because through them we have risen again, and through them, God's love and glory were revealed. Therefore, nothing is more precious, nothing more glorious. Jesus gave His all, and God received it all. When we remember that woman, what we can do is to recognize and follow this hidden value in Jesus. If we only follow the outward glory, we will not understand the meaning of Jesus' funeral. We will not understand what it means to prepare for a funeral. But if we understand this hidden value, when we prepare for a funeral, we will follow Jesus' path. We will live in longing for Jesus' glorious life of sacrifice and redemption. And nothing can compare to it.

In contrast, the foolish people rejected the life of preparing for Jesus' funeral. Look at verse 4. “[Mark 14:4] But some were angry and said to one another, ‘Why was this perfume wasted?’

[Mark 14:5] This perfume could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they rebuked her.

[Mark 14:6] But Jesus said to them, ‘Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed to me.’”

They were thinking of the value of three hundred denarii, equivalent to three hundred days’ wages for a laborer, or of the way she gave to the poor. But Jesus praised the woman for doing a good deed to Him. By realizing this hidden value, the woman came to cherish Jesus and become a person who was remembered fondly by Him. We too must become such people in this world.

Jesus’ most precious work was completed with his funeral. The one who prepared for it was the wisest. As we live through this time, I pray in the name of the Lord that we may become wise saints who pursue the values of Jesus, prepare for them, and do our best in that work.
