설 명절을 보내면서 설 풍습이 예전과 많이 달라졌음을 깨닫습니다. 예전에는 제사나 모임이나 행사가 주를 이루었다면 이제는 활동이나 시간이나 휴식에 좀더 초점이 많이 생기고 있습니다. ‘명절을 어떻게 보내야 한다’에서 ‘명절을 어떻게 보낼 수 있을까’라고 의식이 바뀌는 것입니다. 이러한 변화를 볼 때 우리는 설명절의 풍속에 많은 변화가 일어나고 있음을 알게 됩니다. 이러한 변화는 앞으로도 계속해서 우리 생활 속에 일어날 것입니다. 세계가 변화되고 있으니 그 변화에 따라서 우리도 변화되는 것입니다.

  

이와 같이 어떤 식으로든지 변화가 일어날 때 좋은 쪽으로 가는 의식이 있습니다. 그 변화를 통해서 하나님을 따라가려고 하면서 하나님을 온전히 의지하는 사람이 있습니다. 하지만 반대로 그럴 때 오히려 세속적으로 변화될 수도 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 변화 속에서 더욱 예수님을 붙드는 생각을 해야 합니다. 그럴 때 신앙도 발전할 수 있습니다. 예수님이 신앙의 중심인데 그 예수님이 사라지면 신앙이란 껍데기에 불과하게 됩니다. 그런 껍데기는 문화나 관습이나 전통으로 변형되어서 오히려 또 다른 세속화의 결과물이 될 뿐입니다. 그러니 원래의 목표였던 예수님을 생각하면서 인격적으로 예수님께 어떻게 대할 것인가를 생각할 때 비로소 더욱 예수님과 친밀한 관계를 이루면서 신앙이 성장할 수 있습니다.

  

 

  

예수님의 십자가 사건을 중심으로 나타났던 여러 명의 인물 중에서 이러한 원리를 잘 보여주는 것이 아리마대 요셉입니다. 그는 이전에 선례가 없고 이럴 때 어떻게 해야 할 지를 잘 알지 못하는 상황에서도 예수님을 생각했을 때 자신이 무엇을 어떻게 하면 좋을지를 지혜롭게 판단했습니다. 그것은 모든 변화되는 시간이나 상황 속에서 무엇을 어떻게 할 때 예수님께 가장 영광이 될 것인가를 보여주는 귀한 믿음의 모습이었습니다. 그에 대해서 설명하는 다음 구절을 보십시오.

  

“[막]15:42 이 날은 준비일 곧 안식일 전날이므로 저물었을 때에

  

[막]15:43 아리마대 사람 요셉이 와서 당돌히 빌라도에게 들어가 예수의 시체를 달라 하니 이 사람은 존경 받는 공회원이요 하나님의 나라를 기다리는 자라”

  

예수님은 안식일이었던 토요일 전날인 금요일에 십자가형을 받고 돌아가셨기 때문에 해가 떨어지기 전에 모든 활동이 끝이 나야만 했습니다. 그리고 십자가에 매달렸던 죄수의 시체는 군병들에 의해 끌어내려져서 일반적으로 그냥 버려졌습니다. 그래서 시체가 썩어 해골이 되었는데 그런 이유로 그곳의 이름이 골고다(Golgotha,헬라어:Γολγοθᾶ)였고 이는 해골(Skull)이라는 뜻이었습니다. 이를 라틴어로 번역해서 Calvariae(칼바리에) 가 되었고 영어로 번역되서 Calvary가 되었고 한글로 ‘갈보리’가 되었습니다.

  

예수님도 당연히 그렇게 시체가 다른 죄수들과 함께 내려져서 골짜기에 버려질 것이었는데 아리마대 요셉이 빌라도에게 들어가 예수님의 시체를 달라고 했던 것입니다. 그리고 특별히 그럴 때 그의 모습을 성경은 ‘당돌히(boldly)’로 표현을 했습니다. 아리마대 요셉은 예수님의 시신을 빌라도에게 요구할 때 특별한 용기를 필요로 했던 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 전례에 없었고 그것을 요구할 때 자신의 존재가 탄로나는 것이라서 위험했으며 그것을 요구했기 때문에 그로 인해서 어떤 불이익이 생길 수도 있었기 때문이었습니다.

  

하지만 전례가 없고 정체가 드러나며 불이익을 감수해야 하는 어려움이 있었지만 그럼에도 그렇게 했던 이유는 오직 예수님 때문이었습니다. 도저히 예수님의 시신이 죄수들과 함께 썩어가는 것을 볼 수 없었던 것입니다. 그걸 왜 볼 수 없었는가 하면 그는 하나님의 나라를 기다리는 자였습니다. 그런 그에게 예수님은 그 하나님의 아들이었던 것입니다. 그것이 그가 그 모든 어려움을 극복할 수 있었던 이유였습니다.

  

 

  

변화 속에서 예수님께로 더욱 나아간다는 것이 바로 이런 의미입니다. 규칙이나 정형화된 삶 속에서 예수님께로 나아가는 것보다 자유와 변형 속에서 오히려 더 예수님께로 나아갈 수 있습니다. 그것이 이상하고 무리한 일이 아니라 그 이전부터 기회가 있다면 예수님을 위해서 무엇인가를 하고 싶었던 사람의 경우에는 자유나 변화가 오히려 더욱 예수님을 따를 기회가 되는 것입니다. 그래서 예수님의 그 무엇인가를 얻을 수 있습니다. 그럴 때 그 모습은 당돌한 모습이며 용기 있는 모습이고 확신에 찬 모습이 됩니다.

  

설 명절에도 많은 시간이 생겼을 때 그 시간 동안 예수님을 생각하며 무엇인가를 하려고 한다고 생각해 보십시오. 예배를 드리거나 성경을 읽거나 기도를 한다고 해 보십시오. 당장 저항이 일어날 것입니다. 왜 안 하던 일을 하는가? 자조적이 될 것이며 스스로 무안해지거나 어색해질 수도 있습니다. 그러나 그럴 때 예수님을 생각한다면 ‘내가 이걸 해야지’ 라는 자기의식이 생기면서 그것이 자신에게 새로운 발전을 이루는 계기가 됩니다.

  

어쩌면 전혀 어려움이 없지는 않을 것입니다. 아리마대 요셉에게도 최대의 어려움은 자기 자신이 아니었습니다. 바로 빌라도 총독이었습니다. 로마의 총독(the governor)이 허락하지 않는다면 예수님의 시신을 받을 수는 없었습니다. 그리고 십자가형을 받은 사형수는 시신을 내주는 법이 아니기도 했습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 빌라도는 그의 청을 들어주었습니다.

  

“[막]15:44 빌라도는 예수께서 벌써 죽었을까 하고 이상히 여겨 백부장을 불러 죽은 지가 오래냐 묻고

  

[막]15:45 백부장에게 알아 본 후에 요셉에게 시체를 내주는지라”

  

대개 십자가 사형수는 십자가에서 오래 버틸 수 있기도 했기 때문에 오전9시정도(제3시)에 십자가에 달려서 오후3시경(제9시)에 세상을 떠나신 예수님은 보통의 경우보다 일찍 세상을 떠나신 것이었습니다. 아마 그 이유는 이전에 받았던 채찍질이 너무 고통스러웠고 그로 인해 십자가를 메고 갈 수도 없던 탈진 상태였기 때문에 빨리 온몸의 진이 빠지면서 세상을 떠나신 것으로 생각이 됩니다. 채찍질은 십자가형을 받은 죄수들이 모두 받는 형벌이었고 이것은 누구에게나 너무나 가혹한 고통이었습니다.

  

이렇게 일찍 세상을 떠나신 예수님의 시신을 빌라도가 죽은 시간만 확인한 다음에 요셉에게 시체를 내준 것은 예수님에 대해서 이스라엘의 대제사장들이 시기로 그를 넘겨준 것을 알고 있었기 때문이었습니다. 유대인의 왕이라는 죄가 어떻게 죄가 될 수 있는가를 의아하게 여겼고 왜 꼭 예수님을 죽여 달라고 하는지 이해를 못했지만 백성들의 선택과 민란이 일어날까 두려워했던 그는 백성들이 원하는 대로 예수님을 십자가형에 처하게 했습니다. 그런 사연이 있었기 때문인지 공회원이었던 아리마대 요셉이 예수님의 시신이 다른 죄수들처럼 버려지고 썩어 해골이 되게 하지 않게 하려고 시신을 장사하게 해달라고 드렸던 청을 받아들였습니다. 그래서 그는 예수님을 위해서 예수님의 시신을 받을 수 있었습니다.

  

 

  

우리도 예수님을 위해서 그 시신을 받으려는 아리마대 요셉처럼 간절한 소원을 가질 때 그것을 이룰 수 있습니다. 교회에 가보자고 할 수도 있고 기도를 같이 해보자고 할 수도 있으며 예배를 드려보자고 할 수도 있고 성경을 읽어보자고 할 수도 있습니다. 아리마대 요셉의 간절함에 대해서 이미 세상을 떠난 예수님의 시신을 내어주는 것 정도는 할 수 있다고 생각하는 빌라도 총독처럼 이 세상에서 우리는 제한을 넘고 한계를 넘으며 이전에 못했거나 안 했던 특별한 일들을 해볼 수 있습니다. 그것이 우리의 간절한 바람일 때 그 정도는 할 수 있다는 납득가능한 일일 때 그것을 받을 수 있습니다.

  

이렇게 예수님의 시신을 받고 나서 그 다음에 아리마대 요셉이 한 것은 정성스럽게 장례를 치르는 일이었습니다.

  

“[막]15:46 요셉이 세마포를 사서 예수를 내려다가 그것으로 싸서 바위 속에 판 무덤에 넣어 두고 돌을 굴려 무덤 문에 놓으매

  

[막]15:47 막달라 마리아와 요세의 어머니 마리아가 예수 둔 곳을 보더라”

  

요셉은 세마포를 사서 예수님의 시신을 내렸고 그 시신을 세마포로 싸서 바위 속에 판 무덤에 넣었고 사람들을 시켜 돌을 굴려 무덤 문에 놓아서 온전한 장례를 치렀습니다. 그것이 그 시대의 장례절차였고 예수님의 시신을 그렇게 정성스럽게 대했습니다. 온 세상의 구주시고 모든 인간을 위한 대속제물이 되셨던 예수님의 장례절차는 너무나 간소했지만 그 과정을 정성스럽게 실행한 아리마대 요셉의 모습은 참으로 진실했습니다. 그리고 그것은 막달라 마리아와 요세의 어머니 마리아의 동참을 통해서 계속 이어지고 있었습니다. 우리는 그런 것이 하나님의 나라를 기다리는 자들의 모습이라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

  

말로만 거창하고 보이는 것에만 요란하고 나타나는 것에만 화려한 모습들을 종종 발견합니다. 그러나 그 모든 것의 이면에는 하나님을 바라는 것보다는 자기 자신을 바라는 모습들이 있다는 것을 간과해서는 안 되겠습니다. 그런 요소들이 오히려 하나님의 영광을 가리게 하며 자기 자신을 더욱 어리석게 만들 뿐입니다. 상황의 변화, 시대의 변화, 생각의 변화, 의식의 변화는 오히려 하나님을 진실하게 믿는 자들이 더욱 나타날 수 있는 시간입니다. 십자가형은 죽음으로 끝이 났고 아무 일도 할 수 없는 안식일이 다가오고 있을 바로 그 때 하나님을 진실하게 믿는 자들이 무엇을 할 수 있는가가 나타나는 시간이 되었고 공회원이었던 아리마대 요셉만이 할 수 있었던 그 일을 그가 잘 감당했을 때 모든 믿는 자들의 위로와 감사가 완성될 수 있었습니다.

  

 

  

우리도 그러한 사람이 되어야 하겠습니다. 예수님을 위해서 예수님을 받는 자들이 될 때 그 예수님을 다시 만나게 될 것입니다. 부활하시는 예수님을 보며 그 누구보다도 더욱 기뻐하게 될 성도가 되기를 준비하며 할 수 있을 때 시간이 있을 때 환경이 될 때 더욱 진실하고 담대하게 주님의 뜻을 받아들이는 성도가 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Mark] 15:42 Now it was Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath. When evening had come,

  

[Mark] 15:43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Council, who was also waiting for the kingdom of God, came and asked for the body of Jesus.

  

[Mark] 15:44 Pilate was surprised that Jesus was already dead, and summoned the centurion and asked him whether he had been dead for some time.

  

[Mark] 15:45 After finding out from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

  

[Mark] 15:46 Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Jesus down, wrapped him in it, and laid him in a tomb hewn out of the rock. He rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. When he was laid down,

  

[Mark 15:47] Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

  

 

  

As we celebrate the Lunar New Year holiday, we realize that Lunar New Year customs have changed significantly. While ancestral rites, gatherings, and events were the main focus in the past, now the focus is more on activities, time, and rest. The awareness has shifted from "How should we spend the holiday?" to "How can we truly celebrate the holiday?" Observing these changes, we realize that many changes are occurring in Lunar New Year customs. These changes will continue to occur in our lives. The world is changing, and we too are changing along with it.

  

 

  

Like this, when change occurs in any way, there is a sense of positive change. Some people seek to follow God through this change and rely completely on Him. However, this can also lead to worldly changes. Therefore, amidst these changes, we must hold on to Jesus even more. Only then can our faith grow. Jesus is the center of faith, and if Jesus disappears, faith becomes nothing more than a shell. Such a shell, transformed into culture, custom, and tradition, only becomes another result of secularization. Therefore, when we remember Jesus, our original goal, and consider how we should personally relate to Him, only then can we cultivate a more intimate relationship with Him and grow in faith.

  

 

  

Among the many figures who emerged around Jesus' crucifixion, Joseph of Arimathea best exemplifies this principle. Even in a situation without precedent and unsure of what to do, Joseph wisely considered Jesus and decided what to do. This was a precious example of faith, demonstrating how to best glorify Jesus in all changing times and circumstances. Consider the following passage that explains this.

  

“[Mark 15:42] Now it was Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath. When evening had come,

  

[Mark 15:43] Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Sanhedrin, who was also waiting for the kingdom of God, asked for the body of Jesus.”

  

Because Jesus was crucified and died on Friday, the day before Saturday, the Sabbath, all activity had to end before sunset. The body of the crucified criminal was taken down by the soldiers and generally discarded. The body decomposed into a skeleton, and for this reason the place was named Golgotha (Greek: Γολγοθᾶ), meaning “Skull.” Translated into Latin, this became Calvariae, then Calvary in English, and finally Calvary in Korean. Jesus' body would have been taken down with the other criminals and thrown into the valley. But Joseph of Arimathea went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. The Bible describes his actions as "boldly." Joseph of Arimathea needed extraordinary courage to request Jesus' body from Pilate. It was unprecedented, and his request risked his identity, potentially leading to repercussions.

  

Yet, despite the unprecedented nature of his identity and the potential consequences, he persisted in doing so solely because of Jesus. He simply could not bear to see Jesus' body decaying alongside the other criminals. He was a man who waited for the kingdom of God. For him, Jesus was the Son of God. That was why he was able to overcome all his difficulties.

  

 

  

This is what it means to move closer to Jesus in the midst of change. Rather than approaching Jesus through rules or a structured life, we can approach Him more deeply through freedom and transformation. This isn't strange or unreasonable. For those who have always wanted to do something for Jesus, given the opportunity, freedom and change can actually provide an even greater opportunity to follow Him. Thus, we can gain something of Jesus. In such a situation, we become bold, courageous, and confident.

  

Imagine spending some free time during the Lunar New Year holiday, thinking about Jesus and doing something with it. Imagine attending a service, reading the Bible, or praying. You'll immediately encounter resistance. You'll feel self-deprecating, embarrassed, and even awkward. However, if you think of Jesus during that time, you'll develop a sense of self-awareness, thinking, "I must do this," and this will become an opportunity for new growth.

  

Perhaps it wasn't entirely without difficulties. Even for Joseph of Arimathea, the greatest challenge wasn't himself. It was Pilate. Without the Roman governor's permission, he couldn't receive Jesus' body. And it wasn't lawful for a crucifixion victim to surrender his body. Surprisingly, Pilate granted his request.

  

[Mark 15:44] Pilate was surprised that Jesus might already be dead, and summoned the centurion. He asked him if he had been dead for some time.

  

[Mark 15:45] After learning from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

  

 

  

Since those condemned to death were usually able to endure the cross for a long time, Jesus, who was crucified around 9:00 a.m. (the third hour) and died around 3:00 p.m. (the ninth hour), died earlier than usual. This is likely due to the agony of the previous flogging, which left him so exhausted he couldn't even carry his cross. Scourging was a common punishment for all those sentenced to death, and it was an extremely harsh and painful experience for anyone. Pilate, who had left this world so young, only confirmed the time of Jesus' death before handing the body over to Joseph because he knew the high priests of Israel had handed Jesus over out of jealousy. He questioned how the sin of being the King of the Jews could be a crime and didn't understand why they insisted on Jesus' death. However, fearing the people's choice and the possibility of a civil uprising, Pilate, however, complied and had Jesus crucified. Perhaps because of this, he granted Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Sanhedrin, the request for burial, so that Jesus' body would not be discarded and left to rot like the other criminals. Thus, he was able to receive Jesus' body for Jesus' sake.

  

 

  

We too can achieve this when we have the same fervent desire as Joseph of Arimathea, who sought Jesus' body for Jesus' sake. We can invite him to church, pray together, attend a service, or read the Bible. Just as Governor Pilate, who believed he could do something as simple as handing over the body of Jesus, who had already passed away, to Joseph of Arimathea's earnest desire, we can overcome limitations and do extraordinary things in this world that we have not been able to do before. When it is our earnest desire, when it is something we can understand and do, we can receive it.

  

 

  

After receiving Jesus' body, the next thing Joseph of Arimathea did was to prepare a proper funeral.

  

“[Mark 15:46] Then he bought linen cloths, took him down, wrapped him in them, and laid him in a tomb hewn out of the rock. He rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

  

[Mark 15:47] Then Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.”

  

 

  

Joseph bought linen cloths, took Jesus' body down, wrapped it in linen cloths, placed it in a tomb hewn out of the rock, and had men roll a stone against the door of the tomb, thus providing a proper burial. That was the funeral custom of that time, and Jesus' body was treated with such care. The funeral of Jesus, the Savior of the world and the ransom sacrifice for all humanity, was remarkably simple, yet Joseph of Arimathea's meticulous execution of the process was truly sincere. And this practice continued through the participation of Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joses. We can see that this is the attitude of those who await the kingdom of God.

  

We often encounter grandiose words, flashy appearances, and flashy appearances. However, we must not overlook the fact that behind all this lies a desire for self rather than for God. Such elements only obscure God's glory and make us more foolish. Changes in circumstances, times, thoughts, and consciousness are times when those who truly believe in God can emerge more. The crucifixion ended in death, and when the Sabbath, a time when no work can be done, was approaching, it was precisely at that moment that those who truly believe in God began to rise again.

  

It was a time to reveal what we can do, and when Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Sanhedrin, successfully accomplished what only he could, the comfort and gratitude of all believers were fulfilled.

  

 

  

We too must become such people. When we receive Jesus for Jesus' sake, we will meet Him again. May we prepare to become believers who will rejoice more than anyone else at the sight of the resurrected Jesus. May we become believers who accept the Lord's will more sincerely and boldly when we can, have time, and have the right circumstances. I pray in the name of the Lord that you may do so.
