에베소서 4장을 통해서 우리는 그리스도인의 새로운 모습을 만들어 나가야 하는 것을 보았습니다. 그 모습은 하나님의 온전한 예정(Predestination)과 섭리(Providence), 경륜(Dispensation)에 의한 모습이었습니다. 그래서 지금까지의 구원도 감사한 것이지만 앞으로의 구원도 더욱 사모해야만 합니다. 우리가 어떤 모습이 되어질 것인가가 하나님의 예정, 섭리, 경륜 속에 있기 때문입니다.
그럴 때 우리가 가져야 하는 마음은 하나님께 순종하는 것입니다. 어떤 상황에서든지 하나님께서는 온전한 계획을 가지고 계십니다. 그 계획에 따라서 순종하며 나아간다면 하나님께서는 가장 아름다운 뜻을 우리에게 이루십니다. 그것이 우리가 구원받은 목적이기도 합니다. 앞선 24절에서 본 것처럼 하나님은 우리가 이 세상에서 옛 사람의 모습을 버리고 새 사람을 입게 되기를 원하십니다.
그럴 때 주님의 뜻은 25, 26절에 잘 나타납니다.
“[엡]4:25 그런즉 거짓을 버리고 각각 그 이웃과 더불어 참된 것을 말하라 이는 우리가 서로 지체가 됨이라
[엡]4:26 분을 내어도 죄를 짓지 말며 해가 지도록 분을 품지 말고
[엡]4:27 마귀에게 틈을 주지 말라”
거짓을 버리고 참된 것을 말하라는 것은 주변 사람들에게 옳은 것을 말해주어서 지체가 된 영향력을 나타내라는 것입니다. 그 반대로 하는 것은 거짓을 취하고 거짓을 말해주는 것입니다. 그러면 지체가 아니라 원수가 될 것입니다. 모든 사기와 속임과 죄악이 이러한 거짓된 것에서 나타납니다. 거짓의 영이 있기 때문에 거짓을 따라가면 그 영의 영향력 속에 놓이게 됩니다. 한마디로 약점을 잡히게 됩니다. 그래서 거짓을 버리고 참된 것을 말하는 것은 거짓의 영향에 놓이지 않게 하는 것이고 그래서 지체로서 진실의 영향 속에 살게 하는 것입니다.
또한 분노에 영향을 피해야 합니다. 분을 내지 않을 수는 없지만 그로 인해서 죄를 짓는다면 그것은 새로운 사람의 모습이 아닙니다. 옛 사람의 모습이라면 그것은 어쩌면 당연한 일이었을 것입니다. 그러나 새 사람의 모습은 그렇지 않습니다. 분노의 영향으로부터 나오는 모습이 있습니다. 예를 들면 해가 지도록 분을 품지 않는 것입니다. 해가 지기 전에 분을 풀고 해가 지고 난 다음에는 분노함이 없도록 하라고 했습니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 마귀에게 틈을 주는 것이기 때문입니다.
가인은 아벨에게 악을 행해서 그를 죽였습니다. 그때 가인은 낮에 들에 있을 때에 아벨을 죽였습니다. 그가 하나님께 제사를 드릴 때 아벨의 제사는 받으시고 자신의 제사는 받지 않으시는 것을 보며 아벨에게 분노를 가졌는데 그 분노를 계속 가지고 있다보니 들에 있을 그 어느 때에 아벨을 죽이고 말았습니다. 그리고 그런 분노의 폭발을 가장 좋아하는 존재는 마귀입니다. 그는 아무 손도 안 대고 자기가 원하는 죄악의 확산을 이루었기 때문입니다.
결국 가인은 농사하는 자였다가 유리하는 떠도는 자로 떨어졌습니다. 그런 모습은 분노을 오래 품는 것이 얼마나 자신의 삶과 다른 사람의 삶을 망가뜨리는지를 보여주는 중요한 예가 되었습니다. 우리도 분노를 오래 품을 때에 우리 자신과 다른 사람에게 죄를 행하게 되는 것을 알아야 하겠습니다. 마귀가 원하는 일을 저절로 하게 되어 있습니다.
그 반대로 행하는 모습이 바로 해가 지기 전에 분을 푸는 것입니다. 그럴 때 앞서 보았던 말씀은 좋은 방법이 됩니다. 거짓을 버리고 참된 것을 말하는 것입니다. 현실을 직시하고 온갖 거짓의 말과 행동을 참된 것으로 반응할 때 우리는 모든 비난의 말과 저주의 말과 욕설의 말로 인해서 마귀에게 틈을 주지 않을 수 있습니다. 그런 상황일 때마다 하나님께로 더욱 나아갈 때 참된 진리로 나아갈 수 있기 때문입니다.
욥은 아내가 하나님을 욕하고 죽으라고 했을 때 하나님께로부터 좋은 것을 받았으니 나쁜 것도 받는 것이라고 말했습니다. 다윗은 시므이가 자신을 피흘린 자라고 비난했을 때 그가 저런 말을 하는 것은 하나님의 뜻이라고 고백했습니다. 모두 하나님을 더욱 의지했을 때 거짓된 말과 악한 말과 과장된 말이 다 사라지고 하나님 안에서 참된 것으로 바뀌게 된 경우들입니다.
우리가 인생에서 더욱 하나님이 기뻐하시는 온전한 새로운 사람의 모습을 갖고자 한다면 이렇게 참된 것으로 나아가야 합니다. 모든 참된 것은 오직 하나님에게서만 발견할 수 있습니다. 저주도 하나님 안에서는 사라지고 비난이나 모욕도 하나님 안에서는 다 무력화됩니다. 믿는 자에게는 귀신을 쫓아내고 새 방언을 말하며 뱀을 집고 무슨 독을 마실 지라도 해를 입지 않으며 병든 자에게 손을 얹은 즉 낫는 표적이 있다고 하셨습니다. 그 ‘믿는 자’의 믿은 내용이란 바로 주께서 다시 살아나셨다는 것입니다. 주님이 참되시고 온전하시고 역사하시는 분이심을 믿는다면 이러한 일들이 온전히 나타나게 될 것입니다. 주님이 그 모든 일을 이루어 주시기 때문입니다.
새로운 모습은 계속 이어집니다.
“[엡]4:28 도둑질하는 자는 다시 도둑질하지 말고 돌이켜 가난한 자에게 구제할 수 있도록 자기 손으로 수고하여 선한 일을 하라

도둑질하지 않고 자기 손으로 수고하여 선한 일을 하고 더러운 말은 하지 않고 선한 말로 은혜를 끼치는 자들이 바로 새로운 사람으로서의 모습입니다. 사람들마다 이런 모습이 각자에게 익숙하기도 하고 익숙하지 않기도 하겠지만 중요한 것은 이런 모습을 자기 자신을 위해서가 아니라 하나님을 위해서 살아가려고 하는 것입니다. 하나님을 의지하는 것이 아니라면 아무 소용이 없이 자신의 본성대로 살아갈 뿐입니다.
하나님을 의지해서 하나님 때문이라면 말에서 행동에서 삶에서 모든 선한 것과 참된 것이 나타나게 될 것입니다. 그리고 그것은 마치 예수님이 살아나신 것과 같을 것입니다. 예수님을 닮을 사람들이 그렇게 이 세상에서 잘 준비된다면 그들이 하나님의 나라에 들어갈 것이고 하나님의 나라에서 하나님의 뜻을 잘 행할 것입니다.
이러한 소망을 가지고 더욱 새로운 사람으로서의 모습을 사모하며 살아가는 귀한 성도들이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Through Ephesians Chapter 4, we have seen that we must create a new image of a Christian. That form was a result of God’s perfect predestination, providence, and dispensation. Therefore, while we are thankful for the salvation we have received so far, we must long even more for the salvation that lies ahead. This is because what form we will become lies within God’s predestination, providence, and dispensation.
In such times, the mindset we must have is one of obedience to God. In any situation, God has a perfect plan. If we move forward in obedience according to that plan, God will fulfill His most beautiful will for us. That is also the purpose for which we were saved. As seen in the preceding verse 24, God desires that we cast off the old self in this world and put on the new self.
In this context, the Lord’s will is clearly revealed in verses 25 and 26. “[Eph] 4:25 Therefore put away falsehood and speak the truth, each to his neighbor, for we are members of one another.
[Eph] 4:26 Do not sin when you are angry; do not let the sun go down on your anger.
[Eph] 4:27 Give the devil a foothold.”
To put away falsehood and speak the truth means to demonstrate the influence of being a member by telling those around you what is right. Doing the opposite is to embrace falsehood and speak lies. Then you will become an enemy rather than a member. All fraud, deception, and sin stem from such falsehood. Because the spirit of falsehood exists, if you follow falsehood, you will be placed under its influence. In short, you will be caught in its weakness. Therefore, putting away falsehood and speaking the truth prevents you from being placed under the influence of falsehood, and thus allows you to live under the influence of truth as a member.
Furthermore, you must avoid the influence of anger. While it is impossible not to get angry, if you commit sin because of it, that is not the image of a new person. If it were the image of the old person, that might have been a natural occurrence. However, the image of the new person is not like that. There are manifestations that emerge from the influence of anger. For example, one should not harbor anger until sunset. It is said that one should release one's anger before the sun sets and remain wrathful afterward. This is because doing so gives the devil an opening.
Cain committed evil against Abel and killed him. Cain killed Abel while he was in the field during the day. He harbored anger toward Abel after seeing that God accepted Abel's sacrifice but not his own; as he continued to hold onto that anger, he ended up killing Abel at some point while he was in the field. The being who most delights in such an explosion of anger is the devil. This is because he achieved the spread of the sin he desired without lifting a finger.
Ultimately, Cain fell from being a farmer to a wandering vagabond. This became an important example demonstrating how harboring anger for a long time ruins one's own life and the lives of others. We, too, must realize that when we harbor anger for a long time, we end up committing sin against ourselves and others. We are bound to do what the devil wants without even realizing it.
The opposite behavior is venting one's anger before the sun sets. In such cases, the scripture we saw earlier serves as a good method: discarding falsehoods and speaking the truth. When we face reality and respond to all kinds of false words and actions with the truth, we can prevent the devil from gaining a foothold through all words of blame, curses, and abusive language. This is because whenever we face such situations, we can move toward the true truth by drawing closer to God.
When Job's wife cursed God and told him to die, he said that since he had received good things from God, he should also receive bad things. When Shimei accused David of being a bloodsucker, David confessed that it was God's will for Shimei to speak such words. These are all instances where, by relying more on God, false, evil, and exaggerated words all disappeared and were transformed into truth within God.
If we wish to possess the image of a complete new person in life who is more pleasing to God, we must move toward truth in this way. All truth can be found only in God. In God, curses vanish, and blame and insults are all rendered powerless. It is said that for believers, there are signs: they will cast out demons, speak in new tongues, pick up snakes, drink no deadly poison, and be healed when they lay hands on the sick. The content of the faith of those ‘believers’ is precisely that the Lord has risen again. If you believe that the Lord is true, perfect, and active, these things will be fully manifested. This is because the Lord accomplishes all these things.
The new appearance continues.
“[Eph] 4:28 Let the one who steals steal no more, but let him work with his own hands to do good, so that he may give to the poor.

Those who do not steal but work with their own hands to do good, and who do not speak foul language but give grace with good words, are the very image of a new person. While this aspect may be familiar to some and unfamiliar to others, the important thing is to strive to live this way not for oneself, but for God. Without relying on God, it is all in vain; one merely lives according to one's own nature.
If you rely on God and act for His sake, all good and true things will manifest in your words, actions, and life. And it will be just like Jesus rising from the dead. If those who wish to resemble Jesus are well prepared in this world in this way, they will enter the Kingdom of God and faithfully carry out God's will there.
I pray in the name of the Lord that you become precious saints who live with this hope, yearning for the image of a new person.
